Versliste
In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.
And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast showed great lovingkindness unto David my father, and hast made me king in his stead.
Now, O Jehovah God, let thy promise unto David my father be established; for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.
Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?
And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thy heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honor, nor the life of them that hate thee, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:
wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honor, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee; neither shall there any after thee have the like.
My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea; and I will make them into rafts to go by sea unto the place that thou shalt appoint me, and will cause them to be broken up there, and thou shalt {Or, carry them away}receive them; and thou shalt accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.
And Jehovah gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league together.
Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise,And apply thy heart unto my knowledge.
And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand {Hebrew: cor.}measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of {Or, beaten}pure oil: thus gave Solomon to Hiram year by year.
These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
The fear of Jehovah is the {Or, chief part}beginning of knowledge;But the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.
The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom;And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Be not wise in thine own eyes;Fear Jehovah, and depart from evil:
To know wisdom and instruction;To discern the words of understanding;
To receive instruction in wise dealing,In righteousness and justice and equity;
To give prudence to the simple,To the young man knowledge and discretion:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made through him; and without him {Or, was not anything made. That which hath been made was life in him; and the life &c.}was not anything made that hath been made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness {Or, overcame See chapter 12:35 (Greek).}apprehended it not.
There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John.
The same came for witness, that he might bear witness of the light, that all might believe through him.
He was not the light, but came that he might bear witness of the light.
{Or, the true light, which lighteth every man, was coming}There was the true light, even the light which lighteth {Or, every man as he cometh}every man, coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world knew him not.
He came unto {Greek: his own things}his own, and they that were his own received him not.
But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, even to them that believe on his name:
who were {Greek: begotten}born, not of {Greek: bloods}blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
And the Word became flesh, and {Greek: tabernacled}dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, glory as of {Or, an only begotten from a father Compare Hebrews 11:17}the only begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth.
I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning,Before the earth was.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
When he {Or, prepared}established the heavens, I was there:When he set a circle upon the face of the deep,
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
When he gave to the sea {Or, his decree}its bound,That the waters should not transgress his commandment,When he {Or, appointed}marked out the foundations of the earth;
All things were made through him; and without him {Or, was not anything made. That which hath been made was life in him; and the life &c.}was not anything made that hath been made.
When he gave to the sea {Or, his decree}its bound,That the waters should not transgress his commandment,When he {Or, appointed}marked out the foundations of the earth;
hath at the end of these days spoken unto us in {Greek: a Son.}his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the {Greek: ages. Compare 1 Timothy 1:17}worlds;
Then I was by him, as a master workman;And I {Or, had delight continually}was daily his delight, {Or, Sporting}Rejoicing always before him,
and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, as a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son: in thee I am well pleased.
Counsel is mine, and {Or, effectual working}sound knowledge:I am understanding; I have might.
But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who was made unto us wisdom from God, {Or, both rightousness and sanctification and redemption}and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption:
If thou seek her as silver,And search for her as for hid treasures:
in whom are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden.
O ye simple, understand prudence;And, ye fools, be of an understanding heart.
In that same hour he rejoiced {Or, by}in the Holy Spirit, and said, I {Or, praise}thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou didst hide these things from the wise and understanding, and didst reveal them unto babes: yea, Father; {Or, that}for so it was well-pleasing in thy sight.
But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely,And shall be quiet without fear of evil.
Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
For whoso findeth me findeth life,And shall {Hebrew: draw forth.}obtain favor of Jehovah.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth hath eternal life.
Come, eat ye of my bread,And drink of the wine which I have mingled.
Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
Understanding is a well-spring of life unto him that hath it;But the correction of fools is their folly.
A rebuke entereth deeper into one that hath understandingThan a hundred stripes into a fool.
A continual dropping in a very rainy dayAnd a contentious woman are alike:
The fear of Jehovah {Hebrew: addeth.}prolongeth days;But the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
And Cain {Hebrew: said unto.}told Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives,And in their death they were not divided:They were swifter than eagles,They were stronger than lions.
When a man's ways please Jehovah,He maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.
But there came Jews thither from Antioch and Iconium: and having persuaded the multitudes, they stoned Paul, and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.
So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain;It taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house;But he that hateth bribes shall live.
A bribe is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it;Whithersoever {Or, he}it turneth, {Or, he}it {Or, dealeth wisely}prospereth.
Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye,Neither desire thou his dainties:
For {Or, as one that reckoneth}as he thinketh within himself, so is he:Eat and drink, saith he to thee;But his heart is not with thee.
The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up,And lose thy sweet words.
He that augmenteth his substance by interest and increase,Gathereth it for him that hath pity on the poor.
He that hath an evil eye hasteth after riches,And knoweth not that want shall come upon him.
Honor Jehovah with thy substance,And with the first-fruits of all thine increase:
So shall thy barns be filled with plenty,And thy vats shall overflow with new wine.
The merciful man doeth good to his own soul;But he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.
There is that scattereth, and increaseth yet more;And there is that withholdeth {Or, what is justly due}more than is meet, but it tendeth only to want.
The liberal soul shall be made fat;And he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth;But he that hath pity on the poor, happy is he.
He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker;But he that hath mercy on the needy honoreth him.
The fear of Jehovah is to hate evil:Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way,And the perverse mouth, do I hate.
The lip of truth shall be established for ever;But a lying tongue is but for a moment.
Deceit is in the heart of them that devise evil;But to the counsellors of peace is joy.
There shall no mischief happen to the righteous;But the wicked shall be filled with evil.
Lying lips are an abomination to Jehovah;But they that deal truly are his delight.
A righteous man hateth lying;But a wicked man {Or, causeth shame and bringeth reproach}is loathsome, and cometh to shame.
Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,And hands that shed innocent blood;
Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,And hands that shed innocent blood;
The fear of Jehovah is to hate evil:Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way,And the perverse mouth, do I hate.
When pride cometh, then cometh shame;But with the lowly is wisdom.
Better is he that is lightly esteemed, and hath a servant,Than he that honoreth himself, and lacketh bread.
Go to the ant, thou sluggard;Consider her ways, and be wise:
Which having no {Or, judge}chief,Overseer, or ruler,
Provideth her bread in the summer,And gathereth her food in the harvest.
How long wilt thou {Hebrew: lie down.}sleep, O sluggard?When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
Yet a little sleep, a little slumber,A little folding of the hands to {Hebrew: lie down.}sleep:
So shall thy poverty come as a {Or, rover}robber,And thy want as {Hebrew: a man with a shield.}an armed man.
He becometh poor that worketh with a slack hand;But the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes,So is the sluggard to them that send him.
He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread;But he that followeth after {Or, vain things}vain persons is void of understanding.
The hand of the diligent shall bear rule;But {Hebrew: slothfulness.}the slothful shall be put under taskwork.
The slothful man {Or, catcheth not his prey}roasteth not that which he took in hunting;But the precious substance of men {Or, is to be diligent}is to the diligent.
