For this let every one that is godly pray unto thee {Or, in the time of finding out sin}in a time when thou mayest be found:Surely when the great waters overflow they shall not reach unto him.
Thou art my hiding-place; thou wilt preserve me from trouble;Thou wilt compass me about with songs of deliverance. [Selah

Have mercy upon me, O Jehovah; for I am withered away:O Jehovah, heal me; for my bones are troubled.
My soul also is sore troubled:And thou, O Jehovah, how long?
Return, O Jehovah, deliver my soul:Save me for thy lovingkindness' sake.
For in death there is no remembrance of thee:In Sheol who shall give thee thanks?
I am weary with my groaning;Every night make I my bed to swim;I water my couch with my tears.
Mine eye wasteth away because of grief;It waxeth old because of all mine adversaries.
Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity;For Jehovah hath heard the voice of my weeping.
Jehovah hath heard my supplication;Jehovah will receive my prayer.
All mine enemies shall be put to shame and sore troubled:They shall turn back, they shall be put to shame suddenly.

Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity,And cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions;And my sin is ever before me.
Against thee, thee only, have I sinned,And done that which is evil in thy sight;That thou mayest be justified when thou speakest,And be clear when thou judgest.
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity;And in sin did my mother conceive me.
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts;And in the hidden part thou wilt make me to know wisdom.
Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean:Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Make me to hear joy and gladness,That the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
Hide thy face from my sins,And blot out all mine iniquities.
Create {Or, for me}in me a clean heart, O God;And renew a {Or, stedfast}right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from thy presence;And take not thy holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation;And uphold me with a willing spirit.
Then will I teach transgressors thy ways;And sinners shall {Or, return}be converted unto thee.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation;And my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
O Lord, open thou my lips;And my mouth shall show forth thy praise.
For thou delightest not in sacrifice; {Or, that I should give it}else would I give it:Thou hast no pleasure in burnt-offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit:A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion:Build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
Then wilt thou delight in the sacrifices of righteousness,In burnt-offering and whole burnt-offering:Then will they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son.Jehovah, how are mine adversaries increased!Many are they that rise up against me.
And {Or, the teachers of the people}they that are wise among the people shall instruct many; yet they shall fall by the sword and by flame, by captivity and by spoil, many days.
And some of {Or, the teachers}them that are wise shall fall, to refine them, and to purify, and to make them white, even to the time of the end; because it is yet for the time appointed.
And {Or, the teachers}they that are wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
Here is wisdom. He that hath understanding, let him count the number of the beast; for it is the number of a man: and his number is {Some ancient authorities read Six hundred and sixteen.}Six hundred and sixty and six.
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that through {Or, stedfastness}patience and through comfort of the scriptures we might have hope.

Thy tongue deviseth very wickedness,Like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
Thou lovest evil more than good,And lying rather than to speak righteousness. [Selah
Thou lovest all devouring words, {Or, And the deceitful tongue}O thou deceitful tongue.
God will likewise {Or, break thee down}destroy thee for ever;He will take thee up, and pluck thee out of thy tent,And root thee out of the land of the living. [Selah
The righteous also shall see it, and fear,And shall laugh at him, saying,
Lo, this is the man that made not God his {Or, stronghold}strength,But trusted in the abundance of his riches,And strengthened himself in his wickedness.
But as for me, I am like a green olive-tree in the house of God:I trust in the lovingkindness of God for ever and ever.
I will give thee thanks for ever, because thou hast done it;And I will hope in thy name, for it is good, in the presence of thy saints.

God looked down from heaven upon the children of men,To see if there were any that did {Or, deal wisely}understand,That did seek after God.
Every one of them is gone back; they are together become filthy;There is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge,Who eat up my people as they eat bread,And call not upon God?
There were they in great fear, where no fear was;For God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee:Thou hast put them to shame, because God hath rejected them.
Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion!When God {Or, returneth to}bringeth back the captivity of his people,Then shall Jacob rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.
For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments. Maschil of David; when the Ziphites came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us?Save me, O God, by thy name,And judge me in thy might.
Hear my prayer, O God;Give ear to the words of my mouth.
For strangers are risen up against me,And violent men have sought after my soul:They have not set God before them. [Selah
Behold, God is my helper:The Lord is {Or, with}of them that uphold my soul.
{Another reading is, The evil shall return.}He will requite the evil unto {Or, them that lie in wait for me}mine enemies:Destroy thou them in thy truth.
With a freewill-offering will I sacrifice unto thee:I will give thanks unto thy name, O Jehovah, for it is good.
For he hath delivered me out of all trouble;And mine eye hath seen my desire upon mine enemies.

Attend unto me, and answer me:I am restless in my complaint, and moan,
Because of the voice of the enemy,Because of the oppression of the wicked;For they cast iniquity upon me,And in anger they persecute me.
My heart is sore pained within me:And the terrors of death are fallen upon me.
Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me,And horror hath overwhelmed me.
And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove!Then would I fly away, and be at rest.
Lo, then would I wander far off,I would lodge in the wilderness. [Selah
I would {Or, hasten my escape}haste me to a shelterFrom the stormy wind and tempest.
{Hebrew: Swallow up.}Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongue;For I have seen violence and strife in the city.
Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof:Iniquity also and mischief are in the midst of it.
Wickedness is in the midst thereof: {Or, Fraud}Oppression and guile depart not from its streets.
For it was not an enemy that reproached me;Then I could have borne it:Neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me;Then I would have hid myself from him:
But it was thou, a man mine equal,My companion, and my familiar friend.
We took sweet counsel together;We walked in the house of God with the throng.

As for me, I will call upon God;And Jehovah will save me.

He hath redeemed my soul in peace {Or, so that none came nigh me}from the battle that was against me;For they were many that strove with me.
God will hear, and {Or, afflict}answer them,Even he that abideth of old, [SelahThe men who have no changes,And who fear not God.
He hath put forth his hands against such as were at peace with him:He hath profaned his covenant.
His mouth was smooth as butter,But his heart was war:His words were softer than oil,Yet were they drawn swords.
Cast {Or, what he hath given thee}thy burden upon Jehovah, and he will sustain thee:He will never suffer the righteous to be moved.
But thou, O God, wilt bring them down into the pit of destruction:Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days;But I will trust in thee.
Maschil of David, when he was in the cave; a Prayer.I cry with my voice unto Jehovah;With my voice unto Jehovah do I make supplication.
I pour out my complaint before him;I show before him my trouble.
When my spirit {Or, fainted}was overwhelmed within me,Thou knewest my path.In the way wherein I walkHave they hidden a snare for me.
Look on my right hand, and see;For there is no man that knoweth me:Refuge hath failed me;No man careth for my soul.
I cried unto thee, O Jehovah;I said, Thou art my refuge,My portion in the land of the living.
Attend unto my cry;For I am brought very low:Deliver me from my persecutors;For they are stronger than I.
Bring my soul out of prison,That I may give thanks unto thy name:The righteous shall {Or, crown themselves because of me}compass me about;For thou wilt deal bountifully with me.

My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God:When shall I come and appear before God?
My tears have been my food day and night,While they {Hebrew: all the day.}continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
These things I remember, and pour out my soul {Hebrew: upon.}within me,How I went with the throng, and {Or, went in procession with them}led them to the house of God,With the voice of joy and praise, a multitude keeping holyday.
Why art thou {Hebrew: bowed down.}cast down, O my soul?And why art thou disquieted within me?Hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise himFor the help of his countenance.
O my God, my soul is cast down within me:Therefore do I remember thee from the land of the Jordan,And the Hermons, from {Or, the little mountain}the hill Mizar.
Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterfalls:All thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
Yet Jehovah will command his lovingkindness in the day-time;And in the night his song shall be with me,Even a prayer unto the God of my life.
I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me?Why go I mourning {Or, while the enemy oppresseth}because of the oppression of the enemy?
As with {Or, crushing}a sword in my bones, mine adversaries reproach me,While they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

Thou didst drive out the nations with thy hand;But them thou didst plant:Thou didst afflict the peoples;But them thou didst spread abroad.
For they gat not the land in possession by their own sword,Neither did their own arm save them;But thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance,Because thou wast favorable unto them.
Thou art my King, O God:Command {Or, victories}deliverance for Jacob.
Through thee will we push down our adversaries:Through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
For I will not trust in my bow,Neither shall my sword save me.
But thou hast saved us from our adversaries,And hast put them to shame that hate us.
In God have we made our boast all the day long,And we will give thanks unto thy name for ever. [Selah
But now thou hast cast us off, and brought us to dishonor,And goest not forth with our hosts.
Thou makest us to turn back from the adversary;And they that hate us take spoil for themselves.
Thou hast made us like sheep appointed for food,And hast scattered us among the nations.
Thou sellest thy people for nought,And hast not increased thy wealth by their price.
Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbors,A scoffing and a derision to them that are round about us.
Thou makest us a byword among the nations,A shaking of the head among the peoples.
All the day long is my dishonor before me,And the shame of my face hath covered me,
For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth,By reason of the enemy and the avenger.
All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee,Neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.
Our heart is not turned back,Neither have our steps declined from thy way,

If we have forgotten the name of our God,Or spread forth our hands to a strange god;
Will not God search this out?For he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long;We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord?Arise, cast us not off for ever.
Wherefore hidest thou thy face,And forgettest our affliction and our oppression?
For our soul is bowed down to the dust:Our body cleaveth unto the earth.
Rise up for our help,And redeem us for thy lovingkindness' sake.

Thou art fairer than the children of men;Grace is poured {Or, upon}into thy lips:Therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.
Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O mighty one,Thy glory and thy majesty.
And in thy majesty ride on prosperously, {Or, In behalf of}Because of truth and meekness and righteousness:And {Or, let thy right hand teach}thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things.
Thine arrows are sharp;The peoples fall under thee;They are in the heart of the king's enemies.

Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated wickedness:Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed theeWith the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Kings' daughters are among thy honorable women:At thy right hand doth stand the queen in gold of Ophir.
Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear;Forget also thine own people, and thy father's house:
So will the king desire thy beauty;For he is thy lord; and reverence thou him.
And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift;The rich among the people shall entreat thy favor.

Let my prayer enter into thy presence;Incline thine ear unto my cry.
For my soul is full of troubles,And my life draweth nigh unto Sheol.
I am reckoned with them that go down into the pit;I am as a man that hath no help,
Cast {Or, away}off among the dead,Like the slain that lie in the grave,Whom thou rememberest no more,And they are cut off from thy hand.
Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit,In dark places, in the deeps.
Thy wrath lieth hard upon me,And thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. [Selah
Thou hast put mine acquaintance far from me;Thou hast made me an abomination unto them:I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.
Mine eye wasteth away by reason of affliction:I have called daily upon thee, O Jehovah;I have spread forth my hands unto thee.
Wilt thou show wonders to the dead?Shall {Or, the shades Hebrew: Rephaim.}they that are decreased arise and praise thee? [Selah
Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave?Or thy faithfulness in {Hebrew: Abaddon. See Job 26:6.}Destruction?
Shall thy wonders be known in the dark?And thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
But unto thee, O Jehovah, have I cried;And in the morning shall my prayer come before thee.
Jehovah, why castest thou off my soul?Why hidest thou thy face from me?
I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up:While I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.
Thy fierce wrath is gone over me;Thy terrors have cut me off.
They came round about me like water all the day long;They compassed me about together.
Lover and friend hast thou put far from me,And mine acquaintance {Or, are darkness}into darkness.
Maschil of Asaph.O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever?Why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?
Remember thy congregation, which thou hast gotten of old,Which thou hast redeemed to be the tribe of thine inheritance;And mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual ruins, {Or, The enemy hath wrought all evil}All the evil that the enemy hath done in the sanctuary.
Thine adversaries have roared in the midst of thine assembly;They have set up their ensigns for signs.
They {Or, made themselves known}seemed as men that lifted upAxes upon a thicket of trees.
And now all the carved work thereofThey break down with hatchet and hammers.
They have set thy sanctuary on fire;They have profaned the dwelling-place of thy name by casting it to the ground.
They said in their heart, Let us make havoc of them altogether:They have burned up all the {Or, places of assembly}synagogues of God in the land.
We see not our signs:There is no more any prophet;Neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.
How long, O God, shall the adversary reproach?Shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?
Why drawest thou back thy hand, even thy right hand?Pluck it out of thy bosom and consume them.
Yet God is my King of old,Working salvation in the midst of the earth.
Thou didst {Hebrew: break up.}divide the sea by thy strength:Thou brakest the heads of the sea-monsters in the waters.
Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces;Thou gavest him to be food to the people inhabiting the wilderness.
Thou didst cleave fountain and flood:Thou driedst up {Or, ever-flowing}mighty rivers.
The day is thine, the night also is thine:Thou hast prepared the {Hebrew: luminary.}light and the sun.
Thou hast set all the borders of the earth:Thou hast made summer and winter.
Remember this, that the enemy {Or, hath reproached Jehovah}hath reproached, O Jehovah,And that a foolish people hath blasphemed thy name.
Oh deliver not {Or, the turtle-dove unto the greedy multitude}the soul of thy turtle-dove unto the wild beast:Forget not the {Or, multitude}life of thy poor for ever.
Have respect unto the covenant;For the dark places of the {Or, land}earth are full of the habitations of violence.
Oh let not the oppressed return ashamed:Let the poor and needy praise thy name.
Arise, O God, plead thine own cause:Remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee all the day.
Forget not the voice of thine adversaries:The tumult of those that rise up against thee {Or, which ascendeth}ascendeth continually.

I will open my mouth in a parable;I will utter dark sayings of old,
Which we have heard and known,And our fathers have told us.
We will not hide them from their children,Telling to the generation to come the praises of Jehovah,And his strength, and his wondrous works that he hath done.
For he established a testimony in Jacob,And appointed a law in Israel,Which he commanded our fathers,That they should make them known to their children;
That the generation to come might know them, even the children that should be born;Who should arise and tell them to their children,
That they might set their hope in God,And not forget the works of God,But keep his commandments,

Now to him that worketh, the reward is not reckoned as of grace, but as of debt.
But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is reckoned for righteousness.
Even as David also pronounceth blessing upon the man, unto whom God reckoneth righteousness apart from works,
saying, {Psalm 32:1 f.}Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven,And whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not reckon sin.
Is this blessing then pronounced upon the circumcision, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say, To Abraham his faith was reckoned for righteousness.
