For the Chief Musician. Maschil of David; when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech.
Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man?
The lovingkindness of God endureth continually.
Thy tongue deviseth very wickedness,
Like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
Thou lovest evil more than good,
And lying rather than to speak righteousness. [Selah
Thou lovest all devouring words,
{Or, And the deceitful tongue}O thou deceitful tongue.
God will likewise {Or, break thee down}destroy thee for ever;
He will take thee up, and pluck thee out of thy tent,
And root thee out of the land of the living. [Selah
The righteous also shall see it, and fear,
And shall laugh at him, saying,
Lo, this is the man that made not God his {Or, stronghold}strength,
But trusted in the abundance of his riches,
And strengthened himself in his wickedness.
But as for me, I am like a green olive-tree in the house of God:
I trust in the lovingkindness of God for ever and ever.
I will give thee thanks for ever, because thou hast done it;
And I will hope in thy name, for it is good, in the presence of thy saints.
Querverweise zu Psalm 52,1 Ps 52,1
For strangers are risen up against me,And violent men have sought after my soul:They have not set God before them. [Selah
Behold, they belch out with their mouth;Swords are in their lips:For who, say they, doth hear?
In the pride of the wicked {Or, he doth hotly pursue the poor}the poor {Hebrew: is set on fire.}is hotly pursued; {Or, They are taken}Let them be taken in the devices that they have conceived.
Behold, he travaileth with iniquity;Yea, he hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.
The {Or, giants See Numbers 13:33.}Nephilim were in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them: the same were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown.
But the lovingkindness of Jehovah is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him,And his righteousness unto children's children;
Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before Jehovah; and his name was Doeg the Edomite, the {Or, mightiest}chiefest of the herdsmen that belonged to Saul.
Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in his heart he layeth wait for him.
For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire,And {Or, blesseth the covetous, but contemneth &c.}the covetous renounceth, yea, {Or, revileth}contemneth Jehovah.
His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and {Or, fraud}oppression:Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.
And Jehovah saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
O give thanks unto Jehovah; for he is good; For his lovingkindness endureth for ever.
Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who {Or, was set over}stood by the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.
And he inquired of Jehovah for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.
Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king.
And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.
And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who among all thy servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and is taken into thy council, and is honorable in thy house?
Have I to-day begun to inquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute anything unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for thy servant knoweth nothing of all this, less or more.
And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house.
And the king said unto the {Hebrew: runners.}guard that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of Jehovah; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled, and did not disclose it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of Jehovah.
And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and he slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod.
And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen and asses and sheep, with the edge of the sword.
For every matter of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, whereof one saith, This is it, the cause of both parties shall come before {Or, the judges}God; he whom {Or, the judges}God shall condemn shall pay double unto his neighbor.
They prate, they speak arrogantly:All the workers of iniquity boast themselves.
The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit:He hath ceased to be wise and to do good.
He deviseth iniquity upon his bed;He setteth himself in a way that is not good;He abhorreth not evil.
Thy lovingkindness, O Jehovah, is in the heavens;Thy faithfulness reacheth unto the skies.
Thy righteousness is like the mountains of God;Thy judgments are a great deep:O Jehovah, thou preservest man and beast.
And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.
By the rivers of Babylon,There we sat down, yea, we wept,When we remembered Zion.
backbiters, {Or, haters of God}hateful to God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
In whose heart is perverseness,Who deviseth evil continually,Who {Hebrew: letteth loose.}soweth discord.
He was a mighty hunter before Jehovah: wherefore it is said, Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before Jehovah.
Upon the willows in the midst thereofWe hanged up our harps.
For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, railers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
A heart that deviseth wicked purposes,Feet that are swift in running to mischief,
Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before Jehovah; and his name was Doeg the Edomite, the {Or, mightiest}chiefest of the herdsmen that belonged to Saul.
Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is begotten of God, and knoweth God.
None {Hebrew: called.}sueth in righteousness, and none pleadeth in truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
{Or, Both hands are put forth for evil to do it &c.}Their hands are upon that which is evil to do it diligently; the prince asketh, and the judge is ready for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth the evil desire of his soul: thus they weave it together.
