Now faith is {Or, the giving substance to}assurance of things hoped for, a {Or, test}conviction of things not seen.
For therein the elders had witness borne to them.
By faith we understand that the {Greek: ages. Compare 1 Timothy 1:17 margin}worlds have been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen hath not been made out of things which appear.
By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he had witness borne to him that he was righteous, {The Greek text in this clause is somewhat uncertain.}God bearing witness {Or, over his gifts}in respect of his gifts: and through it he being dead yet speaketh.
By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and he was not found, because God translated him: {Or, for before his translation he hath had witness borne to him that he &c.} for he hath had witness borne to him that before his translation he had been well-pleasing unto God:
and without faith it is impossible to be well-pleasing unto him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that seek after him.
By faith Noah, being warned of God concerning things not seen as yet, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; through which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out unto a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
By faith he became a sojourner in the land of promise, as in a land not his own, {Or, having taken up his abode in tents}dwelling in tents, with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
for he looked for the city which hath the foundations, whose {Or, architect}builder and maker is God.
By faith even Sarah herself received power to conceive seed when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised:
wherefore also there sprang of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of heaven in multitude, and as the sand, which is by the sea-shore, innumerable.
These all died {Greek: according to.}in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
For they that say such things make it manifest that they are seeking after a country of their own.
And if indeed they had been mindful of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return.
But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God; for he hath prepared for them a city.
By faith Abraham, being tried, {Greek: hath offered up.}offered up Isaac: yea, he that had gladly received the promises was offering up his only begotten son;
even he {Or, of}to whom it was said, {Genesis 21:12}In Isaac shall thy seed be called:
accounting that God is able to raise up, even from the dead; from whence he did also in a figure receive him back.
By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even concerning things to come.
By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.
By faith Joseph, when his end was nigh, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.
By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months by his parents, because they saw he was a goodly child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.
By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;
choosing rather to share ill treatment with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
accounting the reproach of {Or, the Christ Compare 1 Corinthians 10:4.}Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt: for he looked unto the recompense of reward.
By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
By faith he {Or, instituted Greek: hath made.}kept the passover, and the sprinkling of the blood, that the destroyer of the firstborn should not touch them.
By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were swallowed up.
By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been compassed about for seven days.
By faith Rahab the harlot perished not with them that were disobedient, having received the spies with peace.
And what shall I more say? for the time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah; of David and Samuel and the prophets:
who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, waxed mighty in war, turned to flight armies of aliens.
Women received their dead by a resurrection: and others were {Or, beaten to death}tortured, not accepting {Greek: the redemption.}their deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
and others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:
they were stoned, they were sawn asunder, they were tempted, they were slain with the sword: they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated
(of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves, and the holes of the earth.
And these all, having had witness borne to them through their faith, received not the promise,
God having {Or, forseen}provided some better thing concerning us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.
But the {Greek: saying.}word of the Lord abideth for ever. And this is the {Greek: saying.}word of good tidings which was {See verse 12.}preached unto you.
And God said unto Moses, {Or, I AM, BECAUSE I AM Or, I AM WHO AM Or, I WILL BE THAT I WILL BE}I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, {Hebrew: Ehueh. From the same root as Jehovah.}I AM hath sent me unto you.
Jehovah {Or, formed}possessed me {Or, as}in the beginning of his way, {Or, The first of}Before his works of old.
{Or, Jacob}James, a {Greek: bondservant.}servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are of the Dispersion, {Greek: wisheth joy.}greeting.
Count it all joy, my brethren, when ye fall into manifold {Or, trials}temptations;
knowing that the proving of your faith worketh {Or, stedfastness}patience.
And let {Or, stedfastness}patience have its perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, lacking in nothing.
But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting: for he that doubteth is like the surge of the sea driven by the wind and tossed.
For let not that man think {Or, that a doubleminded man, unstable in all his ways, shall receive anything of the Lord}that he shall receive anything of the Lord;
a doubleminded man, unstable in all his ways.
But let the brother of low degree glory in his high estate:
and the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
For the sun ariseth with the scorching wind, and withereth the grass; and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his goings.
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been approved, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to them that love him.
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted {Greek: from.}of God; for God {Or, is untried in evil}cannot be tempted with {Greek: evil things.}evil, and he himself tempteth no man:
but each man is {Or, tempted by his own lust, being drawn away by it, and enticed.}tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.
Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin: and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.
Be not deceived, my beloved brethren.
Every good {Or, giving}gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, neither shadow that is cast by turning.
Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
{Or, Know ye}Ye know this, my beloved brethren. But let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
Wherefore putting away all filthiness and overflowing of {Or, malice}wickedness, receive with meekness the {Or, inborn}implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves.
For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding {Greek: the face of his birth.}his natural face in a mirror:
for he beholdeth himself, and goeth away, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
But he that looketh into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and so continueth, being not a hearer that forgetteth but a doer that worketh, this man shall be blessed in his doing.
If any man {Or, seemeth to be}thinketh himself to be religious, while he bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his heart, this man's religion is vain.
Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
for in him were all things created, in the heavens and upon the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and unto him;
and he is before all things, and in him all things {That is, hold together.}consist.
And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.
But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto his Father, having loved his own that were in the world, he loved them {Or, to the uttermost}unto the end.
And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to {Or, deliver him up}betray him,
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came forth from God, and goeth unto God,
riseth from supper, and layeth aside his garments; and he took a towel, and girded himself.
Then he poureth water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
So he cometh to Simon Peter. He saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt understand hereafter.
Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
Jesus saith to him, He that is bathed needeth not {Some ancient authorities omit save, and his feet}save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
For he knew him that should {Or, deliver him up}betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
So when he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and {Greek: reclined.}sat down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
Ye call me, Teacher, and, Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
For I have given you an example, that ye also should do as I have done to you.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, a {Greek: bondservant.}servant is not greater than his lord; neither {Greek: an apostle}one that is sent greater than he that sent him.
If ye know these things, blessed are ye if ye do them.
I speak not of you all: I know whom I {Or, chose}have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled: {Psalm 41:9.}He that eateth {Many ancient authorities read his bread with me.}my bread lifted up his heel against me.
From henceforth I tell you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in the spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall {Or, deliver me up.}betray me.
The disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.
There was at the table reclining in Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
Simon Peter therefore beckoneth to him, and saith unto him, Tell us who it is of whom he speaketh.
He leaning back, as he was, on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
Jesus therefore answereth, He it is, for whom I shall dip the sop, and give it him. So when he had dipped the sop, he taketh and giveth it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
And after the sop, then entered Satan into him. Jesus therefore saith unto him, What thou doest, do quickly.
Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
For some thought, because Judas had the {Or, box}bag, that Jesus said unto him, Buy what things we have need of for the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.
He then having received the sop went out straightway: and it was night.
When therefore he was gone out, Jesus saith, Now {Or, was}is the Son of man glorified, and God {Or, was}is glorified in him;
and God shall glorify him in himself, and straightway shall he glorify him.
Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say unto you.
A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; {Or, even as I loved you, that ye also may love one another.}even as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow afterwards.
Peter saith unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee even now? I will lay down my life for thee.
Jesus answereth, Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
After these things Jesus manifested himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and he manifested himself on this wise.
There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called {That is, Twin.}Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.
Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also come with thee. They went forth, and entered into the boat; and that night they took nothing.
But when day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach: yet the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
Jesus therefore saith unto them, Children, have ye aught to eat? They answered him, No.
And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
That disciple therefore whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his coat about him (for he was {Or, had on his undergarment only Compare chapter 13:4; Isaiah 20:2; Micah 1:8, 11}naked), and cast himself into the sea.
But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits off), dragging the net full of fishes.
So when they got out upon the land, they see {Greek: a fire of charcoal.}a fire of coals there, and {Or, a fish}fish laid thereon, and {Or, a loaf}bread.
Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now taken.
Simon Peter therefore went {Or, aboard}up, and drew the net to land, full of great fishes, a hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, the net was not rent.
Jesus saith unto them, Come and break your fast. And none of the disciples durst inquire of him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.
Jesus cometh, and taketh the {Or, a loaf}bread, and giveth them, and the fish likewise.
This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
So when they had broken their fast, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of {Greek: Joanes. See chapter 1:42 margin}John, {Love in these places represents two different Greek words.}lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I {Love in these places represents two different Greek words.}love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
He saith to him again a second time, Simon, son of {Greek: Joanes. See chapter 1:42 margin}John, {Love in these places represents two different Greek words.}lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I {Love in these places represents two different Greek words.}love thee. He saith unto him, Tend my sheep.
He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of {Greek: Joanes. See chapter 1:42 margin}John, {Love in these places represents two different Greek words.}lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, {Love in these places represents two different Greek words.}Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou {Or, perceivest}knowest that I {Love in these places represents two different Greek words.}love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
Now this he spake, signifying by what manner of death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.
Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; who also leaned back on his breast at the supper, and said, Lord, who is he that {Or, delivereth thee up}betrayeth thee?
Peter therefore seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, {Greek: and this man, what?}and what shall this man do?
Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.
This saying therefore went forth among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, that he should not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
This is the disciple that beareth witness of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his witness is true.
And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that should be written.
For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David; when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bath-sheba.Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness:According to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity,And cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions; And my sin is ever before me.
Against thee, thee only, have I sinned,And done that which is evil in thy sight; That thou mayest be justified when thou speakest,And be clear when thou judgest.
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity; And in sin did my mother conceive me.
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts; And in the hidden part thou wilt make me to know wisdom.
Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean:Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Make me to hear joy and gladness,That the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
Hide thy face from my sins,And blot out all mine iniquities.
Create {Or, for me}in me a clean heart, O God;And renew a {Or, stedfast}right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from thy presence; And take not thy holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; And uphold me with a willing spirit.
Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; And sinners shall {Or, return}be converted unto thee.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation; And my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
O Lord, open thou my lips; And my mouth shall show forth thy praise.
For thou delightest not in sacrifice; {Or, that I should give it}else would I give it:Thou hast no pleasure in burnt-offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit:A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion:Build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
Then wilt thou delight in the sacrifices of righteousness,In burnt-offering and whole burnt-offering:Then will they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
And Jehovah said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people that are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;
and I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Saith the Lord, {Or, who doeth these things which were known & c.}who maketh these things known from of old.
For the word of Jehovah is right; And all his work is done in faithfulness.
For how many soever be the promises of God, in him is the yea: wherefore also through him is the Amen, unto the glory of God through us.
א ALEPH.Blessed are they that are {Or, upright in way}perfect in the way,Who walk in the law of Jehovah.
Blessed are they that keep his testimonies,That seek him with the whole heart.
Yea, they do no unrighteousness; They walk in his ways.
Thou hast commanded us thy precepts,That we should observe them diligently.
Oh that my ways were establishedTo observe thy statutes!
Then shall I not be put to shame,When I have respect unto all thy commandments.
I will give thanks unto thee with uprightness of heart,When I learn thy righteous judgments.
I will observe thy statutes:Oh forsake me not utterly.
ב BETH.Wherewith shall a young man cleanse his way?By taking heed thereto according to thy word.
With my whole heart have I sought thee:Oh let me not wander from thy commandments.
Thy word have I laid up in my heart,That I might not sin against thee.
Blessed art thou, O Jehovah:Teach me thy statutes.
With my lips have I declaredAll the ordinances of thy mouth.
I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies,As much as in all riches.
I will meditate on thy precepts,And have respect unto thy ways.
I will delight myself in thy statutes:I will not forget thy word.
ג GIMEL.Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live;So will I observe thy word.
Open thou mine eyes, that I may beholdWondrous things out of thy law.
I am a sojourner in the earth:Hide not thy commandments from me.
My soul breaketh for the longingThat it hath unto thine ordinances at all times.
Thou hast rebuked the proud {Or, Cursed are they that &c.}that are cursed,That do wander from thy commandments.
Take away from me reproach and contempt; For I have kept thy testimonies.
Princes also sat and talked against me;But thy servant did meditate on thy statutes.
Thy testimonies also are my delightAnd {Hebrew: the men of my counsel.}my counsellors.
ד DALETH.My soul cleaveth unto the dust:Quicken thou me according to thy word.
I declared my ways, and thou answeredst me:Teach me thy statutes.
Make me to understand the way of thy precepts:So shall I meditate on thy wondrous works.
My soul {Hebrew: droppeth.}melteth for heaviness:Strengthen thou me according unto thy word.
Remove from me the way of falsehood; And grant me thy law graciously.
I have chosen the way of faithfulness:Thine ordinances have I set before me.
I cleave unto thy testimonies:O Jehovah, put me not to shame.
I will run the way of thy commandments,When thou shalt enlarge my heart.
ה HE.Teach me, O Jehovah, the way of thy statutes; And I shall keep it unto the end.
Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law;Yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; For therein do I delight.
Incline my heart unto thy testimonies,And not to covetousness.
Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity,And quicken me in thy ways.
Confirm unto thy servant thy word, {Or, Who is devoted to}Which is in order unto the fear of thee.
Turn away my reproach whereof I am afraid; For thine ordinances are good.
Behold, I have longed after thy precepts:Quicken me in thy righteousness.
ו VAV.Let thy lovingkindnesses also come unto me, O Jehovah,Even thy salvation, according to thy word.
So shall I have an answer for him that reproacheth me;For I trust in thy word.
And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; For I have hoped in thine ordinances.
So shall I observe thy law continuallyFor ever and ever.
And I shall walk at liberty; For I have sought thy precepts.
I will also speak of thy testimonies before kings,And shall not be put to shame.
And I will delight myself in thy commandments,Which I have loved.
I will lift up my hands also unto thy commandments, which I have loved; And I will meditate on thy statutes.
ז ZAYIN.Remember the word unto thy servant, {Or, Wherein}Because thou hast made me to hope.
This is my comfort in my affliction; {Or, That}For thy word hath quickened me.
The proud have had me greatly in derision:Yet have I not swerved from thy law.
I have remembered thine ordinances of old, O Jehovah,And have comforted myself.
{Or, Horror}Hot indignation hath taken hold upon me,Because of the wicked that forsake thy law.
Thy statutes have been my songsIn the house of my pilgrimage.
I have remembered thy name, O Jehovah, in the night,And have observed thy law.
This I have had, {Or, That}Because I have kept thy precepts.
ח HHETH. {Or, Jehovah is my portion, have I said: That may observe &c.}Jehovah is my portion:I have said that I would observe thy words.
I entreated thy favor with my whole heart:Be merciful unto me according to thy word.
I thought on my ways,And turned my feet unto thy testimonies.
I made haste, and delayed not,To observe thy commandments.
The cords of the wicked have wrapped me round; But I have not forgotten thy law.
At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto theeBecause of thy righteous ordinances.
I am a companion of all them that fear thee,And of them that observe thy precepts.
The earth, O Jehovah, is full of thy lovingkindness:Teach me thy statutes.
ט TETH.Thou hast dealt well with thy servant,O Jehovah, according unto thy word.
Teach me good judgment and knowledge; For I have believed in thy commandments.
Before I was afflicted I went astray; But now I observe thy word.
Thou art good, and doest good;Teach me thy statutes.
The proud have forged a lie against me:With my whole heart will I keep thy precepts.
Their heart is as fat as grease; But I delight in thy law.
It is good for me that I have been afflicted; That I may learn thy statutes.
The law of thy mouth is better unto meThan thousands of gold and silver.
י YODH.Thy hands have made me and {Or, established}fashioned me:Give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.
They that fear thee shall see me and be glad,Because I have hoped in thy word.
I know, O Jehovah, that thy judgments are righteous,And that in faithfulness thou hast afflicted me.
Let, I pray thee, thy lovingkindness be for my comfort,According to thy word unto thy servant.
Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live; For thy law is my delight.
Let the proud be put to shame; for they have overthrown me {Or, with falsehood}wrongfully:But I will meditate on thy precepts.
Let those that fear thee turn unto me; {Anothing reading is, Even they that know.}And they shall know thy testimonies.
Let my heart be perfect in thy statutes,That I be not put to shame.
כ KAPH.My soul fainteth for thy salvation; But I hope in thy word.
Mine eyes fail for thy word,While I say, When wilt thou comfort me?
For I am become like a wine-skin in the smoke;Yet do I not forget thy statutes.
How many are the days of thy servant? When wilt thou execute judgment on them that persecute me?
The proud have digged pits for me,Who are not according to thy law.
All thy commandments are faithful:They persecute me {Or, with falsehood}wrongfully; help thou me.
They had almost consumed me upon earth; But I forsook not thy precepts.
Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; So shall I observe the testimony of thy mouth.
ל LAMEDH.For ever, O Jehovah,Thy word is settled in heaven.
Thy faithfulness is unto all generations:Thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.
{Or, As for thine ordinances, they abide this day}They abide this day according to thine ordinances; For all things are thy servants.
Unless thy law had been my delight,I should then have perished in mine affliction.
I will never forget thy precepts; For with them thou hast quickened me.
I am thine, save me;For I have sought thy precepts.
The wicked have waited for me, to destroy me;But I will consider thy testimonies.
I have seen an end of all perfection; But thy commandment is exceeding broad.
מ MEM.Oh how love I thy law!It is my meditation all the day.
{Or, Thou through thy commandments makest}Thy commandments make me wiser than mine enemies; For they are ever with me.
I have more understanding than all my teachers; For thy testimonies are my meditation.
I understand more than the aged,Because I have kept thy precepts.
I have refrained my feet from every evil way,That I might observe thy word.
I have not turned aside from thine ordinances; For thou hast taught me.
How sweet are thy words unto my {Hebrew: palate.}taste!Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Through thy precepts I get understanding:Therefore I hate every false way.
נ NUN.Thy word is a lamp unto my feet,And light unto my path.
I have sworn, and have confirmed it,That I will observe thy righteous ordinances.
I am afflicted very much:Quicken me, O Jehovah, according unto thy word.
Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill-offerings of my mouth, O Jehovah,And teach me thine ordinances.
My soul is continually in my hand;Yet do I not forget thy law.
The wicked have laid a snare for me;Yet have I not gone astray from thy precepts.
Thy testimonies have I taken as a heritage for ever; For they are the rejoicing of my heart.
I have inclined my heart to perform thy statutesFor ever, even unto the end.
ס SAMEKH.I hate them that are of a double mind; But thy law do I love.
Thou art my hiding-place and my shield:I hope in thy word.
Depart from me, ye evil-doers,That I may keep the commandments of my God.
Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live; And let me not be ashamed of my hope.
Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe,And shall have respect unto thy statutes continually.
Thou hast set at nought all them that err from thy statutes; For their deceit is {Or, vain}falsehood.
Thou {Hebrew: causest to cease.}puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross:Therefore I love thy testimonies.
My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; And I am afraid of thy judgments.
ע AYIN.I have done justice and righteousness:Leave me not to mine oppressors.
Be surety for thy servant for good:Let not the proud oppress me.
Mine eyes fail for thy salvation,And for thy righteous word.
Deal with thy servant according unto thy lovingkindness,And teach me thy statutes.
I am thy servant; give me understanding,That I may know thy testimonies.
It is time for Jehovah to work; For they have made void thy law.
Therefore I love thy commandmentsAbove gold, yea, above fine gold.
Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; And I hate every false way.
פ PE.Thy testimonies are wonderful; Therefore doth my soul keep them.
The opening of thy words giveth light; It giveth understanding unto the simple.
I opened wide my mouth, and panted; For I longed for thy commandments.
Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me,As thou usest to do unto those that love thy name.
Establish my footsteps in thy word; And let not any iniquity have dominion over me.
Redeem me from the oppression of man:So will I observe thy precepts.
Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; And teach me thy statutes.
Streams of water run down mine eyes,Because they observe not thy law.
צ TSADHE.Righteous art thou, O Jehovah,And upright {Or, in thy judgements}are thy judgments.
Thou hast commanded thy testimonies in righteousnessAnd very faithfulness.
My zeal hath {Hebrew: cut me off.}consumed me,Because mine adversaries have forgotten thy words.
Thy word is very {Hebrew: tried, or, refined.}pure; Therefore thy servant loveth it.
I am small and despised;Yet do I not forget thy precepts.
Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,And thy law is truth.
Trouble and anguish have {Or, found me}taken hold on me;Yet thy commandments are my delight.
Thy testimonies are righteous for ever:Give me understanding, and I shall live.
ק QOPH.I have called with my whole heart; answer me, O Jehovah:I will keep thy statutes.
I have called unto thee; save me,And I shall observe thy testimonies.
I anticipated the dawning of the morning, and cried:I hoped in thy words.
Mine eyes anticipated the night-watches,That I might meditate on thy word.
Hear my voice according unto thy lovingkindness:Quicken me, O Jehovah, {Or, as thou art wont}according to thine ordinances.
They draw nigh {Or, that persecute me with wickedness}that follow after wickedness; They are far from thy law.
Thou art nigh, O Jehovah; And all thy commandments are truth.
Of old have I known from thy testimonies,That thou hast founded them for ever.
ר RESH.Consider mine affliction, and deliver me;For I do not forget thy law.
Plead thou my cause, and redeem me:Quicken me according to thy word.
Salvation is far from the wicked; For they seek not thy statutes.
Great are thy tender mercies, O Jehovah:Quicken me according to thine ordinances.
Many are my persecutors and mine adversaries;Yet have I not swerved from thy testimonies.
I beheld the treacherous, and {Or, loathed them}was grieved,Because they observe not thy word.
Consider how I love thy precepts:Quicken me, O Jehovah, according to thy lovingkindness.
The sum of thy word is truth; And every one of thy righteous ordinances endureth for ever.
שׁ SHIN.Princes have persecuted me without a cause; But my heart standeth in awe of thy words.
I rejoice at thy word,As one that findeth great spoil.
I hate and abhor falsehood; But thy law do I love.
Seven times a day do I praise thee,Because of thy righteous ordinances.
Great peace have they that love thy law;And they have no occasion of stumbling.
I have hoped for thy salvation, O Jehovah,And have done thy commandments.
My soul hath observed thy testimonies; And I love them exceedingly.
I have observed thy precepts and thy testimonies; For all my ways are before thee.
ת TAV.Let my cry come near before thee, O Jehovah:Give me understanding according to thy word.
Let my supplication come before thee:Deliver me according to thy word.
Let my lips utter praise; For thou teachest me thy statutes.
Let my tongue sing of thy word; For all thy commandments are righteousness.
Let thy hand be ready to help me;For I have chosen thy precepts.
I have longed for thy salvation, O Jehovah; And thy law is my delight.
Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; And let thine ordinances help me.
I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; For I do not forget thy commandments.
Who in hope believed against hope, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, {Genesis 15:5}So shall thy seed be.
For the Chief Musician; set to {That is, Lilies, a testimony}Shoshannim Eduth. A Psalm of Asaph.Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel,Thou that leadest Joseph like a flock;Thou that {Or, art enthroned}sittest above the cherubim, shine forth.
Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up thy might,And come to save us.
{Or, Restore}Turn us again, O God;And cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.
O Jehovah God of hosts,How long {Hebrew: wilt thou smoke. See Psalm 74:1}wilt thou be angry against the prayer of thy people?
Thou hast fed them with the bread of tears,And given them tears to drink in large measure.
Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbors; And our enemies laugh among themselves.
{Or, Restore}Turn us again, O God of hosts; And cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.
Thou broughtest a vine out of Egypt:Thou didst drive out the nations, and plantedst it.
Thou preparedst room before it,And it took deep root, and filled the land.
The mountains were covered with the shadow of it,And {Or, the cedars of God with the boughs thereof}the boughs thereof were like {Or, goodly cedars}cedars of God.
It sent out its branches unto the sea,And its shoots unto the River.
Why hast thou broken down its walls,So that all they that pass by the way do pluck it?
The boar out of the wood doth ravage it,And the wild beasts of the field feed on it.
Turn again, we beseech thee, O God of hosts:Look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine,
And {Or, protect (or, maintain) that which &c.}the stock which thy right hand planted,And the {Hebrew: son.}branch that thou madest strong for thyself.
It is burned with fire, it is cut down:They perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.
Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand,Upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself.
So shall we not go back from thee:Quicken thou us, and we will call upon thy name.
{Or, Restore}Turn us again, O Jehovah God of hosts;Cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.
A Psalm of David.Jehovah is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside {Hebrew: waters of rest.}still waters.
He restoreth my soul:He guideth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of {Or, deep darkness (and so elsewhere)}the shadow of death,I will fear no evil; for thou art with me;Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:Thou hast anointed my head with oil;My cup runneth over.
{Or, Only}Surely goodness and lovingkindness shall follow me all the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house of Jehovah {Hebrew: for length of days.}for ever.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
But he that entereth in by the door is the {Or, a shepherd}shepherd of the sheep.
To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
When he hath put forth all his own, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.
This {Or, proverb}parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.
Jesus therefore said unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
All that came {Some ancient authorities omit before me}before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.
I am the door; by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and go out, and shall find pasture.
The thief cometh not, but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I came that they may have life, and may {Or, have abundance}have it abundantly.
I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd layeth down his life for the sheep.
He that is a hireling, and not a shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, beholdeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth, and the wolf snatcheth them, and scattereth them:
he fleeth because he is a hireling, and careth not for the sheep.
I am the good shepherd; and I know mine own, and mine own know me,
even as the Father knoweth me, and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must {Or, lead}bring, and they shall hear my voice: and {Or, there shall be one flock}they shall become one flock, one shepherd.
Therefore doth the Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I may take it again.
No one {Some ancient authorities read took it away}taketh it away from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have {Or, right}power to lay it down, and I have {Or, right}power to take it again. This commandment received I from my Father.
There arose a division again among the Jews because of these words.
And many of them said, He hath a demon, and is mad; why hear ye him?
Others said, These are not the sayings of one possessed with a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?
{Some ancient authorities read At that time was the feast}And it was the feast of the dedication at Jerusalem:
it was winter; and Jesus was walking in the temple in Solomon's {Or, portico}porch.
The Jews therefore came round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou hold us in suspense? If thou art the Christ, tell us plainly.
Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believe not: the works that I do in my Father's name, these bear witness of me.
But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand.
{Some ancient authorities read That which my Father hath given unto me}My Father, who hath given them unto me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch {Or, aught}them out of the Father's hand.
I and the Father are one.
The Jews took up stones again to stone him.
Jesus answered them, Many good works have I showed you from the Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
The Jews answered him, For a good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, {Psalm 82:6}I said, Ye are gods?
If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came (and the scripture cannot be broken),
say ye of him, whom the Father {Or, consecrated}sanctified and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.
But if I do them, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.
They sought again to take him: and he went forth out of their hand.
And he went away again beyond the Jordan into the place where John was at the first baptizing; and there he abode.
And many came unto him; and they said, John indeed did no sign: but all things whatsoever John spake of this man were true.
And many believed on him there.
And he blessed Joseph, and said, The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God who hath fed me all my life long unto this day,
for the Lamb that is in the midst {Or, before See chapter 4:6; compare 5:6.}of the throne shall be their shepherd, and shall guide them unto fountains of waters of life: and God shall wipe away every tear from their eyes.
For the Chief Musician; A Psalm of David, a Song. {Or, God ariseth; and so throughout verse 1, 2, 3.}Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered;Let them also that hate him flee before him.
As smoke is driven away, so drive them away:As wax melteth before the fire,So let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
But let the righteous be glad; let them exult before God:Yea, let them rejoice with gladness.
Sing unto God, sing praises to his name:Cast up a highway for him that rideth through the deserts; His name is {Hebrew: Jah.}Jehovah; and exult ye before him.

Why look ye askance, ye high mountains,At the mountain which God hath desired for his abode?Yea, Jehovah will dwell in it for ever.
The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands upon thousands:The Lord is among them, {Or, Sinai is in the sanctuary}as in Sinai, in the sanctuary.
Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led away captives;Thou hast received gifts among men,Yea, among the rebellious also, that {Hebrew: Jah.}Jehovah God might {Or, dwell there}dwell with them.

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God;And the firmament showeth his handiwork.
Day unto day uttereth speech,And night unto night showeth knowledge.
There is no speech nor language;Their voice is not heard.
Their line is gone out through all the earth,And their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a {Hebrew: tent.}tabernacle for the sun,

His going forth is from the end of the heavens,And his circuit unto the ends of it;And there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.
The law of Jehovah is perfect, restoring the soul:The testimony of Jehovah is sure, making wise the simple.
The precepts of Jehovah are right, rejoicing the heart:The commandment of Jehovah is pure, enlightening the eyes.
The fear of Jehovah is clean, enduring for ever:The ordinances of Jehovah are true, and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold;Sweeter also than honey and the droppings of the honeycomb.
Moreover by them is thy servant warned:In keeping them there is great reward.
Who can discern his errors?Clear thou me from hidden faults.
Keep back thy servant also {Or, from the proud}from presumptuous sins;Let them not have dominion over me:Then shall I be upright,And I shall be clear from great transgression.

which in {Or, his}its own times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of {Greek: them that reign as kings.}kings, and Lord of {Greek: them that rule as lords.}lords;
And they said, Hath Jehovah indeed spoken only {Or, by}with Moses? hath he not spoken also {Or, by}with us? And Jehovah heard it.
Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
And it was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
The sisters therefore sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
But when Jesus heard it, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.
Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
When therefore he heard that he was sick, he abode at that time two days in the place where he was.
Then after this he saith to the disciples, Let us go into Judæa again.
The disciples say unto him, Rabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.
These things spake he: and after this he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus is fallen asleep; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
The disciples therefore said unto him, Lord, if he is fallen asleep, he will {Greek: be saved.}recover.
Now Jesus had spoken of his death: but they thought that he spake of taking rest in sleep.
Then Jesus therefore said unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
Thomas therefore, who is called {That is, Twin.}Didymus, said unto his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.
Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;
and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.
Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary still sat in the house.
Martha therefore said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
And even now I know that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.
Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live;
and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Believest thou this?
She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, even he that cometh into the world.
And when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary {Or, her sister, saying secretly}her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is here, and calleth thee.
And she, when she heard it, arose quickly, and went unto him.
(Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.)
The Jews then who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going unto the tomb to {Greek: wail}weep there.
Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
When Jesus therefore saw her {Greek: wailing}weeping, and the Jews also {Greek: wailing}weeping who came with her, he {Or, was moved with indignation in the spirit}groaned in the spirit, and {Greek: troubled himself.}was troubled,
and said, Where have ye laid him? They say unto him, Lord, come and see.
Jesus wept.
The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!
But some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him that was blind, have caused that this man also should not die?
Jesus therefore again {Or, being moved with indignation in himself}groaning in himself cometh to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay {Or, upon}against it.
Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time {Greek: he stinketh.}the body decayeth; for he hath been dead four days.
Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou believedst, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me.
And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the multitude that standeth around I said it, that they may believe that thou didst send me.
And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with {Or, grave-bands}grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
Many therefore of the Jews, who came to Mary and beheld {Many ancient authorities read the things which he did.}that which he did, believed on him.
But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.
The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many signs.
If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.
But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
nor do ye take account that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
Now this he said not of himself: but, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;
and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God that are scattered abroad.
So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death.
Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed thence into the country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there he tarried with the disciples.
Now the passover of the Jews was at hand: and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, to purify themselves.
They sought therefore for Jesus, and spake one with another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye? That he will not come to the feast?
Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment, that, if any man knew where he was, he should show it, that they might take him.
saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must stand before Cæsar: and lo, God hath granted thee all them that sail with thee.
being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ:
who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye be unreproveable in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
And the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the South, heard tell that Israel came by the way {Or, of the spies}of Atharim; and he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive.
And Israel vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will {Hebrew: devote.}utterly destroy their cities.
And Jehovah hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they {Hebrew: devoted.}utterly destroyed them and their cities: and the name of the place was called {From the same root as herem, a devoted thing.}Hormah.
And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people {Or, was impatient Hebrew: was shortened.}was much discouraged {Or, in}because of the way.
And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loatheth this {Or, vile}light bread.
And Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
And the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, because we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
And Jehovah said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a standard: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live.
And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the standard: and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived.
And the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in Oboth.
And they journeyed from Oboth, and encamped at Iyeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising.
From thence they journeyed, and encamped in the valley of Zered.
From thence they journeyed, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that cometh out of the border of the Amorites: for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.
Wherefore it is said in the book of the Wars of Jehovah,Vaheb {Or, in storm}in Suphah,And the valleys of the Arnon,
And the slope of the valleysThat inclineth toward the dwelling of Ar,And leaneth upon the border of Moab.
And from thence they journeyed to {That is, A well.}Beer: that is the well whereof Jehovah said unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.
Then sang Israel this song:Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:
The well, which the princes digged,Which the nobles of the people delved, {Or, By order of the law-giver}With the sceptre, and with their staves.And from the wilderness they journeyed to Mattanah;
and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth;
and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh down upon {Or, Jeshimon}the desert.
And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,
Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's highway, until we have passed thy border.
And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel.
And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.
And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the {Hebrew: daughters.}towns thereof.
For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon.
Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say,Come ye to Heshbon;Let the city of Sihon be built and established:
For a fire is gone out of Heshbon,A flame from the city of Sihon:It hath devoured Ar of Moab,The lords of {Or, Bamoth}the high places of the Arnon.
Woe to thee, Moab!Thou art undone, O people of Chemosh:He hath given his sons as fugitives,And his daughters into captivity,Unto Sihon king of the Amorites.
We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon,And we have laid waste even unto Nophah,Which reacheth unto Medeba.
Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.
And Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took the towns thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.
And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.
And Jehovah said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.
So they smote him, and his sons and all his people, until there was none left him remaining: and they possessed his land.
The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he {Some ancient authorities read declareth to men.}commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent:
Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto his Father, having loved his own that were in the world, he loved them {Or, to the uttermost}unto the end.
