Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to Jehovah.
Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.
We have transgressed and have rebelled; thou hast not pardoned.
Thou hast {Or, covered thyself}covered with anger and pursued us; thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied.
Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, so that no prayer can pass through.
Thou hast made us an offscouring and refuse in the midst of the peoples.
All our enemies have opened their mouth wide against us.
Fear and the pit are come upon us, {Or, tumult}devastation and destruction.
Mine eye runneth down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
Mine eye poureth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission,
Till Jehovah look down, and behold from heaven.
Mine eye affecteth my soul, because of all the daughters of my city.
They have chased me sore like a bird, they that are mine enemies without cause.
They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and have cast a stone upon me.
Waters flowed over my head; I said, I am cut off.
I called upon thy name, O Jehovah, out of the lowest dungeon.
Thou heardest my voice; hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.
Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee; thou saidst, Fear not.
O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.
O Jehovah, thou hast seen my wrong; judge thou my cause.
Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their devices against me.
Thou hast heard their reproach, O Jehovah, and all their devices against me,
The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.
Behold thou their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their song.
Thou wilt render unto them a recompense, O Jehovah, according to the work of their hands.
Thou wilt give them {Or, blindness Hebrew: covering.}hardness of heart, thy curse unto them.
Thou wilt pursue them in anger, and destroy them from under the heavens of Jehovah.

Thou wilt give them {Or, blindness Hebrew: covering.}hardness of heart, thy curse unto them.
Thou wilt pursue them in anger, and destroy them from under the heavens of Jehovah.
And they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, in their trespass which they trespassed against me, and also that, because they walked contrary unto me,
I also walked contrary unto them, and brought them into the land of their enemies: if then their uncircumcised heart be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity;
then will I remember my covenant with Jacob; and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land.
We have sinned with our fathers,We have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.
I thought on my ways,And turned my feet unto thy testimonies.
In all thy ways acknowledge him,And he will {Or, make straight (or, plain)}direct thy paths.
let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto Jehovah, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation that hath no {Or, longing}shame;
Now therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts: {Hebrew: Set your heart on your ways.}Consider your ways.
Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.
Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: {Hebrew: Set your heart on your ways.}Consider your ways.
My shield is with God,Who saveth the upright in heart.
Let not the foot of pride come against me,And let not the hand of the wicked drive me away.
A Song of Ascents.Unto thee do I lift up mine eyes,O thou that sittest in the heavens.
Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their master,As the eyes of a maid unto the hand of her mistress;So our eyes look unto Jehovah our God,Until he have mercy upon us.
For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.
And ye shall perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.
And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies' lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them.
Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even turning aside, that they should not obey thy voice: therefore hath the curse been poured out upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God; for we have sinned against him.
But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not overtake your fathers? and they turned and said, Like as Jehovah of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.
but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of Jehovah arose against his people, till there was no {Hebrew: healing.}remedy.
Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldeans, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or virgin, old man or hoary-headed: he gave them all into his hand.
Thou hast fed them with the bread of tears,And given them tears to drink in large measure.
but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, so that he will not hear.
And it is come to pass that, as he cried, and they would not hear, so they shall cry, and I will not hear, said Jehovah of hosts;
And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all the peoples whither Jehovah shall lead thee away.
being defamed, we entreat: we are made as the {Or, refuse}filth of the world, the offscouring of all things, even until now.
And I will make your cities a waste, and will bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savor of your sweet odors.
The vision of Obadiah.Thus saith the Lord Jehovah concerning Edom: We have heard tidings from Jehovah, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.
Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon hath devoured {Another reading is, us.}me, he hath crushed {Another reading is, us.}me, he hath made {Another reading is, us.}me an empty vessel, he hath, like a monster, swallowed {Another reading is, us.}me up, he hath filled his maw with my delicacies; he hath cast {Another reading is, us.}me out.
And I will make your cities a waste, and will bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savor of your sweet odors.
And I will bring the land into desolation; and your enemies that dwell therein shall be astonished at it.
And you will I scatter among the nations, and I will draw out the sword after you: and your land shall be a desolation, and your cities shall be a waste.
Wherefore the wrath of Jehovah was upon Judah and Jerusalem, and he hath delivered them to be {Or, a terror}tossed to and fro, to be an astonishment, and a hissing, as ye see with your eyes.
Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until cities be waste without inhabitant, and houses without man, and the land become utterly waste,
In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.
Therefore thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and they shall cry unto me, but I will not hearken unto them.
Then shall the cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem go and cry unto the gods unto which they offer incense: but they will not save them at all in the time of their {Hebrew: evil.}trouble.
And I will stretch out my hand upon them, and make the land desolate and waste, {Or, more than}from the wilderness toward Diblah, throughout all their habitations: and they shall know that I am Jehovah.
And I will make the land a desolation and an astonishment; and the pride of her power shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, so that none shall pass through.
Then shall they know that I am Jehovah, when I have made the land a desolation and an astonishment, because of all their abominations which they have committed.
Streams of water run down mine eyes,Because they observe not thy law.
But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret for your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because Jehovah's flock is taken captive.
And thou shalt say this word unto them, Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease; for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous wound.
Jehovah looked down from heaven upon the children of men,To see if there were any that did {Or, deal wisely}understand,That did seek after God.
And {Or, protect (or, maintain) that which &c.}the stock which thy right hand planted,And the {Hebrew: son.}branch that thou madest strong for thyself.
To hear the sighing of the prisoner;To loose {Hebrew: the children of death.}those that are appointed to death;
That men may declare the name of Jehovah in Zion,And his praise in Jerusalem;
When the peoples are gathered together,And the kingdoms, to serve Jehovah.
For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.In Jehovah do I take refuge: How say ye to my soul,Flee {Or, ye birds}as a bird to your mountain;
Let not them that are mine enemies {Hebrew: falsely.}wrongfully rejoice over me;Neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.
And now hear, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, {Hebrew: fall.}be presented before thee, that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.
Then the princes said unto the king, Let this man, we pray thee, be put to death; forasmuch as he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.
And Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he that can do anything against you.
Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the {Or, pit}dungeon of Malchijah {Or, the son of Hammelech}the king's son, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire.
Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin),
Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house, and spake to the king, saying,
My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and {Hebrew: he is dead.}he is like to die in the place where he is, because of the famine; for there is no more bread in the city.
Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.
So Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence rags and worn-out garments, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.
And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these rags and worn-out garments under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.
So they drew up Jeremiah with the cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.
Oh love Jehovah, all ye his saints:Jehovah preserveth {Or, faithfulness}the faithful,And plentifully rewardeth him that dealeth proudly.
I am weary with my crying; my throat is dried:Mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.
Let not the waterflood overwhelm me,Neither let the deep swallow me up;And let not the pit shut its mouth upon me.
Answer me, O Jehovah; for thy lovingkindness is good:According to the multitude of thy tender mercies turn thou unto me.
And I said, I am cast out from before thine eyes;Yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
{Or, From}By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who among them considered that he was cut off out of the land of the {Or, living? for the transgression of my people was he stricken}living for the transgression of my people to whom the stroke was due?
A Psalm of David.Unto thee, O Jehovah, will I call:My rock, be not thou deaf unto me;Lest, if thou be silent unto me,I become like them that go down into the pit.
Hear the voice of my supplications, when I cry unto thee,When I lift up my hands {Or, toward the innermost place of thy sanctuary}toward thy holy oracle.
They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head:They that would cut me off, being mine enemies {Hebrew: falsely.}wrongfully, are mighty:That which I took not away I have to restore.
Thy wrath lieth hard upon me,And thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. [Selah
Jehovah, why castest thou off my soul?Why hidest thou thy face from me?
A Song of Ascents.Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Jehovah.
Lord, hear my voice:Let thine ears be attentiveTo the voice of my supplications.
I am reckoned with them that go down into the pit;I am as a man that hath no help,
Mine eye wasteth away because of grief;It waxeth old because of all mine adversaries.
Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity;For Jehovah hath heard the voice of my weeping.
Jehovah hath heard my supplication;Jehovah will receive my prayer.
All mine enemies shall be put to shame and sore troubled:They shall turn back, they shall be put to shame suddenly.
O Jehovah, thou hast brought up my soul from Sheol;Thou hast kept me alive, {Another reading is, from among them that go down to the pit.}that I should not go down to the pit.
I am reckoned with them that go down into the pit;I am as a man that hath no help,
I love Jehovah, because he hearethMy voice and my supplications.
Because he hath inclined his ear unto me,Therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.
The cords of death compassed me,And the pains of Sheol {Or, found me}gat hold upon me:I found trouble and sorrow.
Then called I upon the name of Jehovah:O Jehovah, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.
O my God, my soul is cast down within me:Therefore do I remember thee from the land of the Jordan,And the Hermons, from {Or, the little mountain}the hill Mizar.
Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterfalls:All thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
A Song of Ascents; of David.If it had not been Jehovah who was on our side,Let Israel now say,
If it had not been Jehovah who was on our side,When men rose up against us;
Then they had swallowed us up alive,When their wrath was kindled against us;
Then the waters had overwhelmed us,The stream had gone over our soul;
Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
Blessed be Jehovah,Who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers:The snare is broken, and we are escaped.
Jehovah is nigh unto all them that call upon him,To all that call upon him in truth.
He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him;He also will hear their cry and will save them.
Jehovah preserveth all them that love him;But all the wicked will he destroy.
But now thus saith Jehovah that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed thee; I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine.
When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned, neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
Be not afraid because of them; for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith Jehovah.
For, behold, I have made thee this day a fortified city, and an iron pillar, and brazen walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.
And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee, saith Jehovah, to deliver thee.
Arise, O Jehovah; O God, lift up thy hand:Forget not the {Or, meek.}poor.
Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God,And say in his heart, Thou wilt not require it?
Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest {Or, travail and grief}mischief and spite, {Or, to take it into thy hand}to requite it with thy hand:The {Or, hapless}helpless committeth himself unto thee;Thou hast been the helper of the fatherless.
Stir up thyself, and awake to the justice due unto me,Even unto my cause, my God and my Lord.
Judge me, O Jehovah my God, according to thy righteousness;And let them not rejoice over me.
But I was like a gentle lamb that is led to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with the {Hebrew: bread.}fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.
Yet, Jehovah, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me; forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight; but let them be {Hebrew: made to stumble.}overthrown before thee; deal thou with them in the time of thine anger.
Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.
And now I am become their song,Yea, I am a byword unto them.
But I know thy sitting down, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy raging against me.
and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
And ye shall teach them your children, talking of them, when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Give them according to their work, and according to the wickedness of their doings:Give them after the operation of their hands;Render to them their desert.
A Psalm of David.Strive thou, O Jehovah, with them that strive with me:Fight thou against them that fight against me.
Let them be as chaff before the wind,And the angel of Jehovah driving them on.
Let their way be {Hebrew: darkness and slippery places.}dark and slippery,And the angel of Jehovah pursuing them.
For without cause have they hid for me {Or, the pit of their net}their net in a pit;Without cause have they digged a pit for my soul.
And at evening let them return, let them howl like a dog,And go round about the city.
They shall be {Or, poured out by}given over to the power of the sword:They shall be a portion for {Or, jackals}foxes.
But the king shall rejoice in God:Every one that sweareth by him shall glory;For the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold,And see the reward of the wicked.
But thou, O Jehovah, art on high for evermore.
Alexander the coppersmith {Greek: showed.}did me much evil: the Lord will render to him according to his works:
And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh: and Jehovah {Hebrew: made strong.}hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go out of his land.

And there came forth {Hebrew: the spirit.}a spirit, and stood before Jehovah, and said, I will entice him.
And Jehovah said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt entice him, and shalt prevail also: go forth, and do so.
Now therefore, behold, Jehovah hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets; and Jehovah hath spoken evil concerning thee.
And Micaiah said, If thou return at all in peace, Jehovah hath not spoken by me. And he said, Hear, ye peoples, all of you.
He feedeth on ashes; a deceived heart hath turned him aside; and he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?
For this cause they could not believe, for that Isaiah said again,
{Isaiah 6:10}He hath blinded their eyes, and he hardened their heart;Lest they should see with their eyes,and perceive with their heart,And should turn,And I should heal them.
in whom the god of this {Or, age}world hath blinded the {Greek: thoughts. But he that hateth his brother is in the darkness, and walketh in the darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because the darkness hath blinded his eyes.
