For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.In Judah is God known:His name is great in Israel.
In Salem also is his { Or, covert}tabernacle,And his { Or, lnir}dwelling-place in Zion.
There he brake the {Or, fiery shafts Or, lightnings}arrows of the bow;The shield, and the sword, and the battle. [Selah
Glorious art thou and excellent, {Or, More than}From the mountains of prey.
The stouthearted are made a spoil,They have slept their sleep; And none of the men of might have found their hands.
At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob,Both chariot and horse are cast into a deep sleep.
Thou, even thou, art to be feared; And who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?
Thou didst cause sentence to be heard from heaven; The earth feared, and was still,
When God arose to judgment,To save all the meek of the earth. [Selah
Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee:The residue of wrath shalt thou {Or, restrain}gird upon thee.
Vow, and pay unto Jehovah your God:Let all that are round about him bring presents unto him that ought to be feared.
He will cut off the spirit of princes:He is terrible to the kings of the earth.
Maschil of Asaph.O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? Why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?
Remember thy congregation, which thou hast gotten of old,Which thou hast redeemed to be the tribe of thine inheritance; And mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual ruins, {Or, The enemy hath wrought all evil}All the evil that the enemy hath done in the sanctuary.
Thine adversaries have roared in the midst of thine assembly; They have set up their ensigns for signs.
They {Or, made themselves known}seemed as men that lifted upAxes upon a thicket of trees.
And now all the carved work thereofThey break down with hatchet and hammers.
They have set thy sanctuary on fire; They have profaned the dwelling-place of thy name by casting it to the ground.
They said in their heart, Let us make havoc of them altogether:They have burned up all the {Or, places of assembly}synagogues of God in the land.
We see not our signs:There is no more any prophet;Neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.
How long, O God, shall the adversary reproach?Shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?
Why drawest thou back thy hand, even thy right hand?Pluck it out of thy bosom and consume them.
Yet God is my King of old,Working salvation in the midst of the earth.
Thou didst {Hebrew: break up.}divide the sea by thy strength:Thou brakest the heads of the sea-monsters in the waters.
Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces;Thou gavest him to be food to the people inhabiting the wilderness.
Thou didst cleave fountain and flood:Thou driedst up {Or, ever-flowing}mighty rivers.
The day is thine, the night also is thine:Thou hast prepared the {Hebrew: luminary.}light and the sun.
Thou hast set all the borders of the earth:Thou hast made summer and winter.
Remember this, that the enemy {Or, hath reproached Jehovah}hath reproached, O Jehovah,And that a foolish people hath blasphemed thy name.
Oh deliver not {Or, the turtle-dove unto the greedy multitude}the soul of thy turtle-dove unto the wild beast:Forget not the {Or, multitude}life of thy poor for ever.
Have respect unto the covenant; For the dark places of the {Or, land}earth are full of the habitations of violence.
Oh let not the oppressed return ashamed:Let the poor and needy praise thy name.
Arise, O God, plead thine own cause:Remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee all the day.
Forget not the voice of thine adversaries:The tumult of those that rise up against thee {Or, which ascendeth}ascendeth continually.
For the Chief Musician; set to Al-tashheth. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.We give thanks unto thee, O God;We give thanks, {Or, for that thy name is near Thy wonderous works declare}for thy name is near:Men tell of thy wondrous works.
When I shall {Hebrew: take.}find the set time,I will judge uprightly.
{Or, When the earth…I set up}The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved:I have {Hebrew: proportioned.}set up the pillars of it. [Selah
I said unto the {Or, fools}arrogant, Deal not arrogantly; And to the wicked, Lift not up the horn:
Lift not up your horn on high;Speak not {Or, insolently with a haughty neck}with a stiff neck.
For neither from the east, nor from the west,Nor yet {Or, from the wilderness of mountains cometh judgment}from the {Hebrew: wilderness.}south, cometh lifting up.
But God is the judge:He putteth down one, and lifteth up another.
For in the hand of Jehovah there is a cup, and the wine {Or, is red}foameth; It is full of mixture, and he poureth out of the same:Surely the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall drain them, and drink them.
But I will declare for ever,I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
All the horns of the wicked also will I cut off;But the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up.
For the Chief Musician; set to Al-tashheth. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.We give thanks unto thee, O God;We give thanks, {Or, for that thy name is near Thy wonderous works declare}for thy name is near:Men tell of thy wondrous works.
For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.In Judah is God known:His name is great in Israel.
Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard thee.
This is the word that Jehovah hath spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion hath despised thee and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head {Hebrew: after.}at thee.
Whom hast thou defied and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
By thy messengers thou hast defied the Lord, and hast said, With the {According to another reading, driving.}multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice {Or, cypress}fir-trees thereof; and I will enter into his farthest lodging-place, the forest of his fruitful field.
I have digged and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet will I dry up all the rivers of {Or, defence Hebrew: Mazor.}Egypt.
Hast thou not heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? now have I brought it to pass, that it should be thine to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.
Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as grain blasted before it is grown up.
But I know thy sitting down, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy raging against me.
Because of thy raging against me, and because {Or, thy careless ease}thine arrogancy is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
And this shall be the sign unto thee: ye shall eat this year that which groweth of itself, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.
And {Hebrew: the escaped of the house of Judah that remain.}the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.
For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and out of mount Zion they that shall escape: the zeal of {According to another reading, Jehovah of hosts, and so in Isaiah 37:32.}Jehovah shall perform this.
Therefore thus saith Jehovah concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come unto this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.
By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come unto this city, saith Jehovah.
For I will defend this city to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
And it came to pass that night, that the angel of Jehovah went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.
Glorious art thou and excellent, {Or, More than}From the mountains of prey.
Kiss the son, lest he be angry, and ye perish in the way,For his wrath {Or, may}will soon be kindled. {Or, Happy}Blessed are all they that take refuge in him.
For I will this time send all my plagues upon thy heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth.
but in very deed for this cause have I made thee to stand, to show thee my power, and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.
And Moses said unto him, As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands unto Jehovah; the thunders shall cease, neither shall there be any more hail; that thou mayest know that the earth is Jehovah's.
