For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.
In Judah is God known:
His name is great in Israel.
In Salem also is his { Or, covert}tabernacle,
And his { Or, lnir}dwelling-place in Zion.
There he brake the {Or, fiery shafts Or, lightnings}arrows of the bow;
The shield, and the sword, and the battle. [Selah
Glorious art thou and excellent,
{Or, More than}From the mountains of prey.
The stouthearted are made a spoil,
They have slept their sleep;
And none of the men of might have found their hands.
At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob,
Both chariot and horse are cast into a deep sleep.
Thou, even thou, art to be feared;
And who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?
Thou didst cause sentence to be heard from heaven;
The earth feared, and was still,
When God arose to judgment,
To save all the meek of the earth.
[Selah
Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee:
The residue of wrath shalt thou {Or, restrain}gird upon thee.
Vow, and pay unto Jehovah your God:
Let all that are round about him bring presents unto him that ought to be feared.
He will cut off the spirit of princes:
He is terrible to the kings of the earth.
Querverweise zu Psalm 76,12 Ps 76,12
Then will he speak unto them in his wrath,And {Or, trouble}vex them in his sore displeasure:
Wail ye; for the day of Jehovah is at hand; as destruction from {Hebrew: Shaddai. See Genesis 17:1.}the Almighty shall it come.
Therefore shall all hands be feeble, and every heart of man shall melt:
and they shall be dismayed; {Or, they shall take hold of pangs and sorrows}pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman in travail: they shall look in amazement one at another; their faces shall be faces of flame.
Now therefore be wise, O ye kings:Be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that Jehovah will {Hebrew: visit upon.}punish the host of the {Hebrew: height.}high ones on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
For, lo, the kings assembled themselves,They {Or, passed away}passed by together.
They saw it, then were they amazed;They were dismayed, they {Or, were stricken with terror}hasted away.
Trembling took hold of them there,Pain, as of a woman in travail.
And the kings of the earth, and the princes, and the {Or, military tribunes Greek: chiliarchs.}chief captains, and the rich, and the strong, and every bondman and freeman, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains;
Kings of armies flee, they flee;And she that tarrieth at home divideth the spoil.
And I saw {Greek: one.}an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in mid heaven, Come and be gathered together unto the great supper of God;
that ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of {Or, military tribunes Greek: chiliarchs.}captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses and of them that sit thereon, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, and small and great.
And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat upon the horse, and against his army.
And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought the signs in his sight, wherewith he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast and them that {See marginal note on chapter 3:9}worshipped his image: they two were cast alive into the lake of fire that burneth with brimstone:
and the rest were killed with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, even the sword which came forth out of his mouth: and all the birds were filled with their flesh.
{Or, Terrible is God}O God, thou art terrible out of thy holy places:The God of Israel, he giveth strength and power unto his people.Blessed be God.
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, that were by the sea, heard how that Jehovah had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel, until {Another reading is, they.}we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
And Jehovah sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth from his own bowels {Hebrew: caused him to fall.}slew him there with the sword.
I have cut off nations; their {Or, corner towers}battlements are desolate; I have made their streets waste, so that none passeth by; their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, so that there is no inhabitant.
