For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.Hear this, all ye peoples;Give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world,
Both low and high,Rich and poor together.
My mouth shall speak wisdom;And the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.
I will incline mine ear to a parable:I will open my dark saying upon the harp.
Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil,When {Or, the iniquity of them that would supplant me compasseth me about, Even of them that trust…riches?}iniquity at my heels compasseth me about?
They that trust in their wealth,And boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;
None of them can by any means redeem his brother,Nor give to God a ransom for him;
(For the redemption of their life is costly,And it faileth for ever),
That he should still live alway,That he should not see {Or, the pit}corruption.
For {Or, he seeth that wise men &c.}he shall see it. Wise men die;The fool and the brutish alike perish,And leave their wealth to others.
Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever,And their dwelling-places to all generations;They call their lands after their own names.
But man being in honor abideth not:He is like the beasts that perish.
This {Or, is the way of them that are foolish}their way is {Or, their confidence: and after &c.}their folly:Yet after them men approve their sayings. [Selah
They are appointed as a flock for Sheol;Death shall be their shepherd;And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning;And their beauty shall be for Sheol to consume,That there be no habitation for it.
But God will redeem my soul from the {Hebrew: hand.}power of Sheol;For he will receive me. [Selah
Be not thou afraid when one is made rich,When the {Or, wealth}glory of his house is increased:
For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away;His glory shall not descend after him.
Though while he lived he blessed his soul(And men praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself),
{Hebrew: Thou shall go, or, It shall go.}He shall go to the generation of his fathers; {Or, Who never more see}They shall never see the light.
Man that is in honor, and understandeth not,Is like the beasts that perish.
A Psalm of Asaph.The Mighty One, God, Jehovah, hath spoken,And called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,God hath shined forth.
Our God cometh, and doth not keep silence:A fire devoureth before him,And it is very tempestuous round about him.
He calleth to the heavens above,And to the earth, that he may judge his people:
Gather my saints together unto me,Those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.
And the heavens {Or, declare}shall declare his righteousness;For God is judge himself. [Selah
Hear, O my people, and I will speak;O Israel, and I will testify {Or, against}unto thee:I am God, even thy God.
I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices; {Or, Not for thy burnt-offerings, which are &c.}And thy burnt-offerings are continually before me.
I will take no bullock out of thy house,Nor he-goats out of thy folds.
For every beast of the forest is mine,And the cattle {Or, upon the mountains where thousands are}upon a thousand hills.
I know all the birds of the mountains;And the wild beasts of the field are {Or, in my mind Hebrew: with me.}mine.
If I were hungry, I would not tell thee;For the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.
Will I eat the flesh of bulls,Or drink the blood of goats?
Offer unto God the sacrifice of thanksgiving;And pay thy vows unto the Most High;
And call upon me in the day of trouble:I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.
But unto the wicked God saith,What hast thou to do to declare my statutes,And that thou hast taken my covenant in thy mouth,
Seeing thou hatest {Or, correction}instruction,And castest my words behind thee?
When thou sawest a thief, thou consentedst with him,And {Hebrew: thy portion was with adulterers.}hast been partaker with adulterers.
Thou givest thy mouth to evil,And thy tongue frameth deceit.
Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother;Thou {Or, givest a thrust against}slanderest thine own mother's son.
These things hast thou done, and I kept silence;Thou thoughtest that I was altogether such a one as thyself:But I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.
Now consider this, ye that forget God,Lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver:
Whoso offereth the sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifieth me;And {Or, prepareth a way that I may show him}to him that ordereth his way arightWill I show the salvation of God.
For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David; when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bath-sheba.Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness:According to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity,And cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions;And my sin is ever before me.
Against thee, thee only, have I sinned,And done that which is evil in thy sight;That thou mayest be justified when thou speakest,And be clear when thou judgest.
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity;And in sin did my mother conceive me.
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts;And in the hidden part thou wilt make me to know wisdom.
Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean:Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Make me to hear joy and gladness,That the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
Hide thy face from my sins,And blot out all mine iniquities.
Create {Or, for me}in me a clean heart, O God;And renew a {Or, stedfast}right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from thy presence;And take not thy holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation;And uphold me with a willing spirit.
Then will I teach transgressors thy ways;And sinners shall {Or, return}be converted unto thee.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation;And my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
O Lord, open thou my lips;And my mouth shall show forth thy praise.
For thou delightest not in sacrifice; {Or, that I should give it}else would I give it:Thou hast no pleasure in burnt-offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit:A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion:Build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
Then wilt thou delight in the sacrifices of righteousness,In burnt-offering and whole burnt-offering:Then will they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
For the Chief Musician. Maschil of David; when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech.Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man?The lovingkindness of God endureth continually.
Thy tongue deviseth very wickedness,Like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
Thou lovest evil more than good,And lying rather than to speak righteousness. [Selah
Thou lovest all devouring words, {Or, And the deceitful tongue}O thou deceitful tongue.
God will likewise {Or, break thee down}destroy thee for ever;He will take thee up, and pluck thee out of thy tent,And root thee out of the land of the living. [Selah
The righteous also shall see it, and fear,And shall laugh at him, saying,
Lo, this is the man that made not God his {Or, stronghold}strength,But trusted in the abundance of his riches,And strengthened himself in his wickedness.
But as for me, I am like a green olive-tree in the house of God:I trust in the lovingkindness of God for ever and ever.
I will give thee thanks for ever, because thou hast done it;And I will hope in thy name, for it is good, in the presence of thy saints.
For the Chief Musician; set to Mahalath. Maschil of David.The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity;There is none that doeth good.
God looked down from heaven upon the children of men,To see if there were any that did {Or, deal wisely}understand,That did seek after God.
Every one of them is gone back; they are together become filthy;There is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge,Who eat up my people as they eat bread,And call not upon God?
There were they in great fear, where no fear was;For God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee:Thou hast put them to shame, because God hath rejected them.
Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion!When God {Or, returneth to}bringeth back the captivity of his people,Then shall Jacob rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.
What advantage then hath the Jew? or what is the profit of circumcision?
Much every way: first of all, that they were intrusted with the oracles of God.
For what if some were without faith? shall their want of faith make of none effect the faithfulness of God?
{Greek: Be it not so: and so elsewhere.}God forbid: yea, let God be found true, but every man a liar; as it is written, {Psalm 51:4}That thou mightest be justified in thy words,And mightest prevail when thou comest into judgment.
But if our unrighteousness commendeth the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who visiteth with wrath? (I speak after the manner of men.)
{Greek: Be it not so: and so elsewhere.}God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world?
{Many ancient authorities read For.}But if the truth of God through my lie abounded unto his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner?
and why not (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), Let us do evil, that good may come? whose condemnation is just.
What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we before laid to the charge both of Jews and Greeks, that they are all under sin;
as it is written, {Psalm 14:1 ff.; 53:1 ff}There is none righteous, no, not one;
There is none that understandeth,There is none that seeketh after God;
They have all turned aside, they are together become unprofitable;There is none that doeth good, no, not so much as one:
{Psalm 5:9}Their throat is an open sepulchre;With their tongues they have used deceit: {Psalm 140:3}The poison of asps is under their lips:
{Psalm 10:7}Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
{Isaiah 59:7 f.}Their feet are swift to shed blood;
Destruction and misery are in their ways;
And the way of peace have they not known:
{Psalm 36:1}There is no fear of God before their eyes.
Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it speaketh to them that are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God:
because {Greek: out of.}by {Or, works of law}the works of the law shall no flesh be {Or, accounted righteous}justified in his sight; for {Or, through law}through the law cometh the knowledge of sin.
But now apart from the law a righteousness of God hath been manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
even the righteousness of God through faith {Or, of}in Jesus Christ unto all {Some ancient authorities add and upon all.}them that believe; for there is no distinction;
for all {Greek: sinned.}have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;
being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
whom God set forth {Or, to be propitiatory}to be a propitiation, through faith, in his blood, to show his righteousness because of the passing over of the sins done aforetime, in the forbearance of God;
for the showing, I say, of his righteousness at this present season: that he might himself be {See chapter 2:13 margin.}just, and the {See chapter 2:13 margin.}justifier of him that {Greek: is of faith.}hath faith in Jesus.
Where then is the glorying? It is excluded. By what manner of law? of works? Nay: but by a law of faith.
{Many ancient authorities read For we reckon.}We reckon therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from {Or, works of law}the works of the law.
Or is God the God of Jews only? is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yea, of Gentiles also:
if so be that God is one, and he shall justify the circumcision {Greek: out of. Galatians 3:8.}by faith, and the uncircumcision {Or, through the faith Galatians 2:16.}through faith.
Do we then make {Or, law}the law of none effect {Or, through the faith Galatians 2:16.}through faith? God forbid: nay, we establish {Or, law}the law.
For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments. Maschil of David; when the Ziphites came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us?Save me, O God, by thy name,And judge me in thy might.
Hear my prayer, O God;Give ear to the words of my mouth.
For strangers are risen up against me,And violent men have sought after my soul:They have not set God before them. [Selah
Behold, God is my helper:The Lord is {Or, with}of them that uphold my soul.
{Another reading is, The evil shall return.}He will requite the evil unto {Or, them that lie in wait for me}mine enemies:Destroy thou them in thy truth.
With a freewill-offering will I sacrifice unto thee:I will give thanks unto thy name, O Jehovah, for it is good.
For he hath delivered me out of all trouble;And mine eye hath seen my desire upon mine enemies.
