And Jacob called unto his sons, and said: Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the latter days.
Assemble yourselves, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; And hearken unto Israel your father.
Reuben, thou art my first-born, my might, and the {Or, first-fruits}beginning of my strength; The pre-eminence of dignity, and the pre-eminence of power.
Boiling over as water, {Or, have not thou}thou shalt not have the pre-eminence;Because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; Then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.
Simeon and Levi are brethren;Weapons of violence are their {Or, compacts}swords.
O my soul, come not thou into their {Or, secret}council;Unto their assembly, my glory, be not thou united; For in their anger they slew {Or, men}a man,And in their self-will they hocked {Or, oxen}an ox.
Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; And their wrath, for it was cruel:I will divide them in Jacob,And scatter them in Israel.
Judah, thee shall thy brethren praise:Thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies;Thy father's sons shall bow down before thee.
Judah is a lion's whelp; From the prey, my son, thou art gone up:He stooped down, he couched as a lion,And as a lioness; who shall rouse him up?
The sceptre shall not depart from Judah,Nor {Or, a lawgiver}the ruler's staff from between his feet, {Or, Til he come to Shiloh, having the obedience of the peoples Or, according to Syriac, Til he come whose it is &c.}Until Shiloh come:And unto him shall the obedience of the peoples be.
Binding his foal unto the vine,And his ass's colt unto the choice vine;He hath washed his garments in wine,And his vesture in the blood of grapes:
His eyes shall be red with wine,And his teeth white with milk.
Zebulun shall dwell at the {Hebrew: beach.}haven of the sea;And he shall be for a {Hebrew: beach.}haven of ships; And his border shall be {Or, by}upon Sidon.
Issachar is a strong ass,Couching down between the sheepfolds:
And he saw {Or, rest}a resting-place that it was good,And the land that it was pleasant; And he bowed his shoulder to bear,And became a servant under taskwork.
Dan shall judge his people,As one of the tribes of Israel.
Dan shall be a serpent in the way,An {Or, horned snake}adder in the path,That biteth the horse's heels,So that his rider falleth backward.
I have waited for thy salvation, O Jehovah.
Gad, {Hebrew: gedud, a marauding band.}a troop {Hebrew: gad, to press.}shall press upon him;But he shall press upon their heel.
Out of Asher his bread shall be fat,And he shall yield royal dainties.
Naphtali is a hind let loose:He giveth goodly words.
Joseph is {Hebrew: the son of a fruitful tree.}a fruitful bough,A fruitful bough by a fountain; His {Hebrew: daughters.}branches run over the wall.
The archers have sorely grieved him,And shot at him, and persecuted him:
But his bow abode in strength,And the arms of his hands were made {Or, active}strong,By the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob( {Or, From hence from the shepherd Or, as otherwise read, By the name of the shepherd}From thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel),
Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee,And by the Almighty, who shall bless thee,With blessings of heaven above,Blessings of the deep that coucheth beneath,Blessings of the breasts, and of the womb.
The blessings of thy fatherHave prevailed above the blessings of my progenitorsUnto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills:They shall be on the head of Joseph,And on the crown of the head of him {Or, that is prince among}that was separate from his brethren.
Benjamin is a wolf that raveneth:In the morning she shall devour the prey,And at even he shall divide the spoil.
All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them.
And he charged them, and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,
in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a burying-place.
There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah—
the field and the cave that is therein, which was purchased from the children of Heth.
And when Jacob made an end of charging his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.
Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt; (every man and his household came with Jacob):
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: and Joseph was in Egypt already.
And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.
Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.
And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are {Or, too many and too mighty for us}more and mightier than we:
come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they also join themselves unto our enemies, and fight against us, and get them up out of the land.
Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh store-cities, Pithom and Raamses.
But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And they {Or, abhorred}were grieved because of the children of Israel.
And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigor:
and they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field, all their service, wherein they made them serve with rigor.
And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:
and he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the birth-stool; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him; but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.
But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men-children alive.
And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men-children alive?
And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwife come unto them.
And God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.
And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them households.
And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.
And he said,Jehovah came from Sinai,And rose from Seir unto them;He shined forth from mount Paran,And he came from the ten thousands of {Hebrew: holiness.}holy ones:At his right hand {Or, was fire, a law Or, as otherwise read, were streams for them}was a fiery law for them.
Yea, he loveth the {Or, tribes}people; All {Or, their holy ones}his saints are in thy hand:And they sat down at thy feet;Every one {Or, received}shall receive of thy words.
Moses commanded us a law,An inheritance for the assembly of Jacob.
And {Or, there was a king}he was king in Jeshurun,When the heads of the people were gathered,All the tribes of Israel together.
Let Reuben live, and not die; {Or, But}Nor let his men be few.
And this is the blessing of Judah: and he said,Hear, Jehovah, the voice of Judah,And bring him in unto his people. {Or, Let his hands be sufficient for them}With his hands he contended {Or, for them}for himself; And thou shalt be a help against his adversaries.
And of Levi he said,Thy Thummim and thy Urim are with {Or, him whom thou lovest}thy godly one,Whom thou didst prove at Massah,With whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah;
Who said of his father, and of his mother, I have not seen him;Neither did he acknowledge his brethren,Nor knew he his own children:For they have observed thy word,And keep thy covenant.
They shall teach Jacob thine ordinances,And Israel thy law:They shall put incense {Hebrew: in thy nostrils.}before thee,And whole burnt-offering upon thine altar.
Bless, Jehovah, his substance,And accept the work of his hands:Smite through the loins of them that rise up against him,And of them that hate him, that they rise not again.
Of Benjamin he said,The beloved of Jehovah shall dwell in safety by him;He covereth him all the day long,And he dwelleth between his shoulders.
And of Joseph he said,Blessed of Jehovah be his land,For the precious things of heaven, for the dew,And for the deep that coucheth beneath,
And for the precious things of the fruits of the sun,And for the precious things of the growth of the {Or, months}moons,
And for the chief things of the ancient mountains,And for the precious things of the everlasting hills,
And for the precious things of the earth and the fulness thereof,And the good will of him that dwelt in the bush.Let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph,And upon the crown of the head of him {Or, that is prince among}that was separate from his brethren.
{Or, His firstling bullock}The firstling of his herd, majesty is his;And his horns are the horns of the wild-ox:With them he shall {Or, gore}push the peoples all of them, even the ends of the earth:And they are the ten thousands of Ephraim,And they are the thousands of Manasseh.
And of Zebulun he said,Rejoice, Zebulun, in thy going out; And, Issachar, in thy tents.
They shall call the peoples unto the mountain; There shall they offer sacrifices of righteousness:For they shall suck the abundance of the seas,And the hidden treasures of the sand.
And of Gad he said,Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad:He dwelleth as a lioness,And teareth the arm, yea, the crown of the head.
And he {Or, chose Hebrew: saw.}provided the first part for himself,For there was {Or, a ruler's portion}the lawgiver's portion reserved; And he came {Or, to}with the heads of the people; He executed the righteousness of Jehovah,And his ordinances with Israel.
And of Dan he said,Dan is a lion's whelp,That leapeth forth from Bashan.
And of Naphtali he said,O Naphtali, satisfied with favor,And full with the blessing of Jehovah,Possess thou the {Or, sea}west and the south.
And of Asher he said,Blessed be Asher {Or, above sons}with children;Let him be acceptable unto his brethren,And let him dip his foot in oil.
Thy {Or, shoes}bars shall be iron and brass; And as thy days, so shall thy {Or, rest Or, security}strength be.
There is none like unto God, O Jeshurun,Who rideth upon the heavens for thy help,And in his excellency on the skies.
The eternal God is thy dwelling-place,And underneath are the everlasting arms. And he thrust out the enemy from before thee,And said, Destroy.
And Israel dwelleth in safety,The fountain of Jacob alone,In a land of grain and new wine;Yea, his heavens drop down dew.
Happy art thou, O Israel:Who is like unto thee, a people saved by Jehovah,The shield of thy help,And the sword of thy excellency! And thine enemies shall {Or, yield feigned obedience}submit themselves unto thee; And thou shalt tread upon their high places.
Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt; (every man and his household came with Jacob):
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

He suffered no man to do them wrong;Yea, he reproved kings for their sakes,
Saying, Touch not mine anointed ones,And do my prophets no harm.
Why do the nations {Or, tumultuously assemble}rage,And the peoples meditate a vain thing?
The kings of the earth set themselves,And the rulers take counsel together,Against Jehovah, and against his anointed, saying,
Let us break their bonds asunder,And cast away their cords from us.
He that sitteth in the heavens will laugh:The Lord will have them in derision.
Then will he speak unto them in his wrath,And {Or, trouble}vex them in his sore displeasure:
Yet I have set my kingUpon my holy hill of Zion.
I will tell of the decree:Jehovah said unto me, Thou art my son; This day have I begotten thee.
Ask of me, and I will give thee the nations for thine inheritance,And the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron;Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
Now therefore be wise, O ye kings:Be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
Serve Jehovah with fear,And rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the son, lest he be angry, and ye perish in the way,For his wrath {Or, may}will soon be kindled. {Or, Happy}Blessed are all they that take refuge in him.
for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,
And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.

And the second lot came out for Simeon, even for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families: and their inheritance was in the midst of the inheritance of the children of Judah.
Out of the {Hebrew: line.}part of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon; for the portion of the children of Judah was too much for them: therefore the children of Simeon had inheritance in the midst of their inheritance.
And the sons of Reuben the first-born of Israel (for he was the first-born; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father's couch, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright.
For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the {Or, leader}prince; but the birthright was Joseph's),
And now thy two sons, who were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh, even as Reuben and Simeon, shall be mine.
And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.

Happy art thou, O Israel:Who is like unto thee, a people saved by Jehovah,The shield of thy help,And the sword of thy excellency! And thine enemies shall {Or, yield feigned obedience}submit themselves unto thee; And thou shalt tread upon their high places.
If a man have two wives, the one beloved, and the other hated, and they have borne him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the first-born son be hers that was hated;
then it shall be, in the day that he causeth his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved the first-born {Or, during the lifetime of}before the son of the hated, who is the first-born:
but he shall acknowledge the first-born, the son of the hated, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath; for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the first-born is his.
And Jehovah saw that Leah was hated, and he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.
Thy way was in the sea,And thy paths in the great waters,And thy footsteps were not known.
Thy righteousness is like the mountains of God;Thy judgments are a great deep:O Jehovah, thou preservest man and beast.
Thy word is very {Hebrew: tried, or, refined.}pure; Therefore thy servant loveth it.
Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; {Or, Jacob}James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;
Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the {See marginal note on chapter 5:46.}publican; {Or, Jacob}James the son of Alphæus, and Thaddæus;
Simon the {Or, Zealot See Luke 6:15, Acts 1:13}Cananæan, and Judas Iscariot, who also {Or, delivered him up}betrayed him.
{Some ancient authorities add and he appointed twelve.}and Simon he surnamed Peter;
and {Or, Jacob}James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of {Or, Jacob}James; and them he surnamed Boanerges, which is, Sons of thunder:
and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and {Or, Jacob}James the son of Alphæus, and Thaddæus, and Simon the {Or, Zealot See Luke 6:15; Acts 1:13.}Cananæan,
and Judas Iscariot, who also {Or, deliver him up}betrayed him.And he cometh {Or, home}into a house.
Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and {Or, Jacob}James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew,
and Matthew and Thomas, and {Or, Jacob}James the son of Alphæus, and Simon who was called the Zealot,
and Judas the {Or, brother See Jude 1.}son of {Or, Jacob}James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor;
And when they were come in, they went up into the upper chamber, where they were abiding; both Peter and John and {Or, Jacob}James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, {Or, Jacob}James the son of Alphæus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the {Or, brother See Jude 1.}son of {Or, Jacob}James.
These all with one accord continued stedfastly in prayer, {Or, with certain women}with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
The {Greek: first.}former treatise I made, O Theophilus, concerning all that Jesus began both to do and to teach,
until the day in which he was received up, after that he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
to whom he also {Greek: presented.}showed himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing unto them by the space of forty days, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God:
and, {Or, eating with them}being assembled together with them, he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, said he, ye heard from me:
for John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized {Or, with}in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.
They therefore, when they were come together, asked him, saying, Lord, dost thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?
And he said unto them, It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father hath {Or, appointed by}set within His own authority.
But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
And when he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
And while they were looking stedfastly into heaven as he went, behold two men stood by them in white apparel;
who also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye looking into heaven? this Jesus, who was received up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye beheld him going into heaven.
Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is nigh unto Jerusalem, a sabbath day's journey off.
And in these days Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren, and said (and there was a multitude of {Greek: names See Revelation 3:4.}persons gathered together, about a hundred and twenty),
Brethren, it was needful that the scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spake before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was guide to them that took Jesus.
For he was numbered among us, and received his {Or, lot}portion in this ministry.
(Now this man obtained a field with the reward of his iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
And it became known to all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch that in their language that field was called Akeldama, that is, The field of blood.)
For it is written in the book of Psalms, {Psalm 69:25}Let his habitation be made desolate,And let no man dwell therein:and, {Psalm 109:8.}His {Greek: overseership.}office let another take.
Of the men therefore that have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and went out {Or, over}among us,
beginning from the baptism of John, unto the day that he was received up from us, of these must one become a witness with us of his resurrection.
And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show of these two the one whom thou hast chosen,
to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.
And they gave lots {Or, unto}for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we bid fire to come down from heaven, and consume them {Many ancient authorities add even as Elijah did Compare 2 Kings 1:10-12}?
Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called {That is, Twin.}Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.
Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, even Jesus;
But we all, with unveiled face {Or, reflecting as a mirror}beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord the Spirit.
