Versliste
Scoffers set a city in a flame; But wise men turn away wrath.
If a wise man hath a controversy with a foolish man, {Or, He rageth and laugheth, and there is no rest}Whether he be angry or laugh, there will be no rest.
The bloodthirsty hate him that is perfect; {Or, But the upright care for his soul}And as for the upright, they seek his life.
A fool uttereth all his {Hebrew: spirit.}anger; But a wise man keepeth it back and stilleth it.
Wherefore hear the word of Jehovah, ye scoffers, that rule this people that is in Jerusalem:
And he went through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel, and to Beth-maacah, and all the Berites: and they were gathered together, and went also after him.
And they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah, and they cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart; and all the people that were with Joab {Or, undermined}battered the wall, to throw it down.
Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto Joab, Come near hither, that I may speak with thee.
And he came near unto her; and the woman said, Art thou Joab? And he answered, I am. Then she said unto him, Hear the words of thy handmaid. And he answered, I do hear.
Then she spake, saying, They were wont to speak in old time, saying, They shall surely ask counsel at Abel: and so they ended the matter.
I am of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: thou seekest to destroy a city and a mother in Israel: why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of Jehovah?
And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy.
The matter is not so: but a man of the hill-country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David; deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.
Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. And he blew the trumpet, and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.
He that being often reproved hardeneth his neckShall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy
When the righteous {Or, are in authority}are increased, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man beareth rule, the people sigh.
Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father; But he that keepeth company with harlots wasteth his substance.
The king by justice establisheth the land; But {Or, he that imposeth tribute Hebrew: a man of offerings.}he that exacteth gifts overthroweth it.
A man that flattereth his neighborSpreadeth a net for his steps.
In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare; But the righteous doth sing and rejoice.
The righteous taketh knowledge of the cause of the poor; The wicked {Or, understandeth not knowledge}hath not understanding to know it.
If a ruler hearkeneth to falsehood,All his servants are wicked.
The poor man and the oppressor meet together;Jehovah lighteneth the eyes of them both.
The king that faithfully judgeth the poor,His throne shall be established for ever.
The rod and reproof give wisdom; But a child left to himself causeth shame to his mother.
When the wicked {Hebrew: answer.}are increased, transgression increaseth; But the righteous shall look upon their fall.
Correct thy son, and he will give thee rest;Yea, he will give delight unto thy soul.
Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint; But he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
A servant will not be corrected by words; For though he understand, he will not {Hebrew: answer.}give heed.
Seest thou a man that is hasty in his {Or, business}words? There is more hope of a fool than of him.
He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a childShall have him become {The meaning of the word is doubtful.}a son at the last.
An angry man stirreth up strife,And a wrathful man aboundeth in transgression.
A man's pride shall bring him low;But he that is of a lowly spirit shall obtain honor.
Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul;He heareth the adjuration and uttereth nothing.
The fear of man bringeth a snare; But whoso putteth his trust in Jehovah {Hebrew: shall be set on high.}shall be safe.
Many seek the ruler's favor; But a man's judgment cometh from Jehovah.
An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous; And he that is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked.
but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
And Jehovah said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door: and unto thee shall be its desire; but do thou rule over it.
And Cain {Hebrew: said unto.}told Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
not as Cain was of the evil one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
Marvel not, brethren, if the world hateth you.
But I say unto you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you,
