A Song of Ascents.Blessed is every one that feareth Jehovah,That walketh in his ways.
For thou shalt eat the labor of thy hands:Happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.
I {Or, was inquired of}am inquired of by them that asked not for me; I {Or, was found}am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation {Or, as otherwise read, that hath not called upon}that was not called by my name.
I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, that walk in a way that is not good, after their own thoughts;
a people that provoke me to my face continually, sacrificing in gardens, and burning incense upon bricks;
that {Or, dwell}sit among the graves, and lodge in the {Or, vaults}secret places; that eat swine's flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels;
that say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me, for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.
Behold, it is written before me: I will not keep silence, but will recompense, yea, I will recompense into their bosom,
your own iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers together, saith Jehovah, that have burned incense upon the mountains, and {Or, defiled}blasphemed me upon the hills; therefore will I {Or, measure their former work}first measure their work into their bosom.
Thus saith Jehovah, As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not, for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants' sake, that I may not destroy them all.
And I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of my mountains; and my chosen shall inherit it, and my servants shall dwell there.
And Sharon shall be a {Or, pasture}fold of flocks, and the valley of Achor a place for herds to lie down in, for my people that have sought me.
But ye that forsake Jehovah, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for {Hebrew: Gad. See Genesis 30:11.}Fortune, and that fill up mingled wine unto {Hebrew: Meni.}Destiny;
I will destine you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter; because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but ye did that which was evil in mine eyes, and chose that wherein I delighted not.
Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry; behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty; behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be put to shame;
behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall wail for {Hebrew: breaking.}vexation of spirit.
And ye shall leave your name for {Hebrew: an oath.}a curse unto my chosen; and the Lord Jehovah will slay thee; and he will call his servants by another name:
so that he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of {Hebrew: Amen. See 2 Corinthians 1:20; Revelation 3:14.}truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of {Hebrew: Amen. See 2 Corinthians 1:20; Revelation 3:14.}truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from mine eyes.
For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former things shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create; for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy.
And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people; and there shall be heard in her no more the voice of weeping and the voice of crying.
There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days; for the child shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner being a hundred years old shall be accursed.
And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.
They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree shall be the days of my people, and my chosen shall {Hebrew: wear out.}long enjoy the work of their hands.
They shall not labor in vain, nor bring forth for {Or, sudden terror}calamity; for they are the seed of the blessed of Jehovah, and their offspring {Or, shall be with them}with them.
And it shall come to pass that, before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox; and dust shall be the serpent's food. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith Jehovah.
A Song of Ascents.In my distress I cried unto Jehovah,And he answered me.
Deliver my soul, O Jehovah, from lying lips,And from a deceitful tongue.
What shall be given unto thee, and what shall be done more unto thee,Thou deceitful tongue?
{Or, It is as the sharp arrows of the mighty man}Sharp arrows of the mighty,With coals of {Or, broom}juniper.
Woe is me, that I sojourn in Meshech,That I dwell among the tents of Kedar!
My soul hath long had her dwellingWith him that hateth peace.
I am for peace:But when I speak, they are for war.
He that walketh in his uprightness feareth Jehovah;But he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.
Jehovah bless thee, and keep thee:
A Song of Ascents; of Solomon.Except Jehovah build the house,They labor in vain that build it:Except Jehovah keep the city,The watchman waketh but in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early,To take rest late,To eat the bread of toil;For so he giveth unto his beloved {Or, in sleep}sleep.
Lo, children are a heritage of Jehovah;And the fruit of the womb is his reward.
As arrows in the hand of a mighty man,So are the children of youth.
Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them:They shall not be put to shame,When they speak with their enemies in the gate.
A Song of Ascents.Blessed is every one that feareth Jehovah,That walketh in his ways.
For thou shalt eat the labor of thy hands:Happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.
Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine,In the innermost parts of thy house;Thy children like olive plants,Round about thy table.
Behold, thus shall the man be blessedThat feareth Jehovah.
Jehovah bless thee out of Zion:And see thou the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.
Yea, see thou thy children's children. {Or, And peace upon Israel}Peace be upon Israel.
A Psalm of David.Blessed be Jehovah my rock,Who teacheth my hands to war,And my fingers to fight:
My lovingkindness, and my fortress,My high tower, and my deliverer;My shield, and he in whom I take refuge;Who subdueth my people under me.
Jehovah, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him?Or the son of man, that thou makest account of him?
Man is like to {Hebrew: a breath.}vanity:His days are as a shadow that passeth away.
Bow thy heavens, O Jehovah, and come down:Touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.
Cast forth lightning, and scatter them;Send out thine arrows, and discomfit them.
Stretch forth thy hand from above;Rescue me, and deliver me out of great waters,Out of the hand of aliens;
Whose mouth speaketh deceit,And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
I will sing a new song unto thee, O God:Upon a psaltery of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.
Thou art he that giveth salvation unto kings;Who rescueth David his servant from the hurtful sword.
Rescue me, and deliver me out of the hand of aliens,Whose mouth speaketh deceit,And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
When our sons shall be as plants grown up in their youth,And our daughters as corner-stones hewn after the fashion of a palace;
When our garners are full, affording all manner of store,And our sheep bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our fields;
When our oxen are well laden;When there is no breaking in, and no {Or, sallying}going forth,And no outcry in our streets:
Happy is the people that is in such a case;Yea, happy is the people whose God is Jehovah.
Happy is the people that is in such a case;Yea, happy is the people whose God is Jehovah.
And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of Jehovah thy God, to observe to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that Jehovah thy God will set thee on high above all the nations of the earth:
and all these blessings shall come upon thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of Jehovah thy God.
Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.
Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy beasts, the increase of thy cattle, and the young of thy flock.
Blessed shall be thy basket and thy kneading-trough.
There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was {Hebrew: Iyob.}Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.
And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? {Or, that}for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil.
And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? {Or, that}for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil: and he still holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, {Hebrew: to swallow him up.}to destroy him without cause.
I also will do this unto you: I will appoint terror over you, even consumption and fever, that shall consume the eyes, and make the soul to pine away; and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.
The fruit of thy ground, and all thy labors, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed alway;
Say ye of the righteous, that it shall be well with him; for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
It is vain for you to rise up early,To take rest late,To eat the bread of toil;For so he giveth unto his beloved {Or, in sleep}sleep.
