A Song of Ascents.
In my distress I cried unto Jehovah,
And he answered me.
Deliver my soul, O Jehovah, from lying lips,
And from a deceitful tongue.
What shall be given unto thee, and what shall be done more unto thee,
Thou deceitful tongue?
{Or, It is as the sharp arrows of the mighty man}Sharp arrows of the mighty,
With coals of {Or, broom}juniper.
Woe is me, that I sojourn in Meshech,
That I dwell among the tents of Kedar!
My soul hath long had her dwelling
With him that hateth peace.
I am for peace:
But when I speak, they are for war.
Querverweise zu Psalm 120,4 Ps 120,4
My soul is among lions;I {Or, must lie}lie among them that are set on fire,Even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows,And their tongue a sharp sword.
He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; He maketh his arrows fiery shafts.
Behold, they belch out with their mouth;Swords are in their lips:For who, say they, doth hear?
God will likewise {Or, break thee down}destroy thee for ever;He will take thee up, and pluck thee out of thy tent,And root thee out of the land of the living. [Selah
With his mouth the godless man destroyeth his neighbor; But through knowledge shall the righteous be delivered.
As for the head of those that compass me about,Let the mischief of their own lips cover them.
He that despiseth his neighbor is void of {Hebrew: heart.}wisdom; But a man of understanding holdeth his peace.
{Hebrew: A man to tongue.}An evil speaker shall not be established in the earth:Evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.
The wicked earneth deceitful wages; But he that soweth righteousness hath a sure reward.
I will heap evils upon them;I will spend mine arrows upon them:
A worthless man {Hebrew: diggeth.}deviseth mischief; And in his lips there is as a scorching fire.
They shall be wasted with hunger, and devoured with {Hebrew: burning coals. See Habakkuk 3:5.}burning heatAnd bitter destruction; And the teeth of beasts will I send upon them,With the poison of crawling things of the dust.
The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels,And they go down into the innermost parts.
Lying lips are an abomination to Jehovah; But they that deal truly are his delight.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue; And they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
A false witness shall not be unpunished; And he that {Hebrew: breatheth out.}uttereth lies shall not escape.
So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, {Or, how great a forest}how much wood is kindled by how small a fire!
And the tongue is {Or, a fire, that world of iniquity: the tongue is among our members that which &c.}a fire: the {Or, that world of iniquity: the tongue, is among our members that which &c.}world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of {Or, birth}nature, and is set on fire by {Greek: Gehenna.}hell.
For every {Greek: nature.}kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed {Or, unto}by {Greek: the human nature.}mankind:
but the tongue can no man tame; it is a restless evil, it is full of deadly poison.
A false witness shall not be unpunished; And he that {Hebrew: breatheth out.}uttereth lies shall perish.
But for the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part shall be in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.
