A Song of Ascents.In my distress I cried unto Jehovah,And he answered me.
Deliver my soul, O Jehovah, from lying lips,And from a deceitful tongue.
What shall be given unto thee, and what shall be done more unto thee,Thou deceitful tongue?
{Or, It is as the sharp arrows of the mighty man}Sharp arrows of the mighty,With coals of {Or, broom}juniper.
Woe is me, that I sojourn in Meshech,That I dwell among the tents of Kedar!
My soul hath long had her dwellingWith him that hateth peace.
I am for peace:But when I speak, they are for war.
And it shall come to pass in the latter days, that the mountain of Jehovah's house shall be established {Or, at the head}on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
And many peoples shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of Jehovah, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth {Or, instruction}the law, and the word of Jehovah from Jerusalem.
In those days the house of Judah shall walk {Or, to}with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I gave for an inheritance unto your fathers.
The word of Jehovah came again unto me, saying,
And thou, son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and {Or, of}for all the house of Israel his companions:
and join them for thee one to another into one stick, that they may become one in thy hand.
And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not show us what thou meanest by these?
say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his companions; and I will put them {Or, together with him unto (or, to be) the stock of Judah}with it, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in my hand.
And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thy hand before their eyes.
And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the nations, whither they are gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:
and I will make them one nation in the land, upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all; and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all;
neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions; but I will save them {Or, with a slight change of text, from all their backslidings}out of all their dwelling-places, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God.
And my servant David shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in mine ordinances, and observe my statutes, and do them.
And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, they, and their children, and their children's children, for ever: and David my servant shall be their prince for ever.
Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; and I will {Or, give it them}place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.
My tabernacle also shall be {Or, over}with them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
And the nations shall know that {Or, I, Jehovah, do sanctify Israel}I am Jehovah that sanctifieth Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.
The hand of Jehovah was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of Jehovah, and set me down in the midst of the valley; and it was full of bones.
And he caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many {Hebrew: upon the face of the valley.}in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.
And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord Jehovah, thou knowest.
Again he said unto me, Prophesy over these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of Jehovah.
Thus saith the Lord Jehovah unto these bones: Behold, I will cause {Or, spirit}breath to enter into you, and ye shall live.
And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put {Or, spirit}breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am Jehovah.
So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a {Or, thundering}noise, and, behold, an earthquake; and the bones came together, bone to its bone.
And I beheld, and, lo, there were sinews upon them, and flesh came up, and skin covered them above; but there was no breath in them.
Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the {Or, breath}wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the {Or, breath}wind, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Come from the four winds, O {Or, wind Or, spirit}breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.
So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.
Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are clean cut off.
Therefore prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, O my people; and I will bring you into the land of Israel.
And ye shall know that I am Jehovah, when I have opened your graves, and caused you to come up out of your graves, O my people.
And I will put my {Or, breath}Spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I will place you in your own land: and ye shall know that I, Jehovah, have spoken it and performed it, saith Jehovah.
and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
And he shall send forth his angels with {Or, a trumpet of great sound}a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
A Song of Ascents; of David.I was glad when they said unto me,Let us go unto the house of Jehovah.
Our feet {Or, have stood}are standingWithin thy gates, O Jerusalem,
Jerusalem, that art buildedAs a city that is compact together;
Whither the tribes go up, even the tribes of {Hebrew: Jah.}Jehovah,For {Hebrew: a testimony.}an ordinance for Israel,To give thanks unto the name of Jehovah.
For there {Or, were}are set thrones for judgment,The thrones of the house of David.
{Or, Salute ye Jerusalem}Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: {Or, May they}They shall prosper that love thee.
Peace be within thy walls,And prosperity within thy palaces.
For my brethren and companions' sakes,I will now {Or, speak peace concerning thee}say, Peace be within thee.
For the sake of the house of Jehovah our GodI will seek thy good.
A Song of Ascents; of David.If it had not been Jehovah who was on our side,Let Israel now say,
If it had not been Jehovah who was on our side,When men rose up against us;
Then they had swallowed us up alive,When their wrath was kindled against us;
Then the waters had overwhelmed us,The stream had gone over our soul;
Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
Blessed be Jehovah,Who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers:The snare is broken, and we are escaped.
Our help is in the name of Jehovah,Who made heaven and earth.
A Song of Ascents; of David.Jehovah, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty;Neither do I {Hebrew: walk.}exercise myself in great matters,Or in things too wonderful for me.
Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul;Like a weaned child with his mother,Like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, hope in JehovahFrom this time forth and for evermore.
A Song of Ascents; of David.Behold, how good and how pleasant it isFor brethren to dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious oil upon the head,That ran down upon the beard,Even Aaron's beard;That came down upon the {Or, collar}skirt of his garments;
Like the dew of Hermon,That cometh down upon the mountains of Zion:For there Jehovah commanded the blessing,Even life for evermore.
A Song of Ascents; of Solomon.Except Jehovah build the house,They labor in vain that build it:Except Jehovah keep the city,The watchman waketh but in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early,To take rest late,To eat the bread of toil;For so he giveth unto his beloved {Or, in sleep}sleep.
Lo, children are a heritage of Jehovah;And the fruit of the womb is his reward.
As arrows in the hand of a mighty man,So are the children of youth.
Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them:They shall not be put to shame,When they speak with their enemies in the gate.
A Song of Ascents.Behold, bless ye Jehovah, all ye servants of Jehovah,That by night stand in the house of Jehovah.
Lift up your hands {Or, in holiness}to the sanctuary,And bless ye Jehovah.
Jehovah bless thee out of Zion;Even he that made heaven and earth.
that then Jehovah thy God will {Or, return to}turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the peoples, whither Jehovah thy God hath scattered thee.
and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
And he shall send forth his angels with {Or, a trumpet of great sound}a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither Jehovah thy God hath driven thee,
and shalt return unto Jehovah thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul;
that then Jehovah thy God will {Or, return to}turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the peoples, whither Jehovah thy God hath scattered thee.
If any of thine outcasts be in the uttermost parts of heaven, from thence will Jehovah thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee:
and Jehovah thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.
