{Or, For the foundations are destroyed; What hath the righteous wrought?}If the foundations be destroyed,What can the righteous do?
Jehovah is in his holy temple;Jehovah, his throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.
{Or, For the foundations are destroyed; What hath the righteous wrought?}If the foundations be destroyed,What can the righteous do?
For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.In Jehovah do I take refuge: How say ye to my soul,Flee {Or, ye birds}as a bird to your mountain;
Why standest thou afar off, O Jehovah? Why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?
Maschil of Asaph.O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? Why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?
Hath God forgotten to be gracious?Hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? [Selah
O Jehovah, thou God to whom vengeance belongeth,Thou God to whom vengeance belongeth, shine forth.
Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth:Render to the proud their desert.
Jehovah, how long shall the wicked,How long shall the wicked triumph?
They prate, they speak arrogantly:All the workers of iniquity boast themselves.
They break in pieces thy people, O Jehovah,And afflict thy heritage.
They slay the widow and the sojourner,And murder the fatherless.
And they say, {Hebrew: Jah.}Jehovah will not see,Neither will the God of Jacob consider.
What aileth thee, O thou sea, that thou fleest?Thou Jordan, that thou turnest back?
Ye mountains, that ye skip like rams;Ye little hills, like lambs?
What shall I render unto JehovahFor all his benefits toward me?
{Or, For the foundations are destroyed; What hath the righteous wrought?}If the foundations be destroyed,What can the righteous do?
Jehovah is in his holy temple;Jehovah, his throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.
Hear the word of Jehovah, ye children of Israel; for Jehovah hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land.
They know not, neither do they understand; They walk to and fro in darkness:All the foundations of the earth are shaken.
Jehovah trieth the righteous; But the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.
For Jehovah is righteous; He loveth {Or, righteous deeds}righteousness: {Or, His countenance doth behold the upright}The upright shall behold his face.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of thy throne:Lovingkindness and truth go before thy face.
Clouds and darkness are round about him:Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness; For the throne is established by righteousness.
Kindness and truth preserve the king; And {Or, he upholdeth his throne}his throne is upholden by kindness.
he that opposeth and exalteth himself against all that is called God or {Greek: an object of worship. Acts 17:23.}that is worshipped; so that he sitteth in the {Or, sanctuary}temple of God, setting himself forth as God.
And I also say unto thee, that thou art {Greek: Petros.}Peter, and upon this {Greek: petra.}rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
{Or, For the foundations are destroyed; What hath the righteous wrought?}If the foundations be destroyed,What can the righteous do?
Jehovah is in his holy temple;Jehovah, his throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.
Behold, his soul is puffed up, it is not {Or, straight}upright in him; but the righteous shall live {Or, in his faithfulness}by his faith.
For therein is revealed a righteousness of God from faith unto faith: as it is written, {Habakkuk 2:4.}But the righteous shall live {Greek: from.}by faith.
Now that no man is justified {Greek: in.}by the law before God, is evident: for, {Habakkuk 2:4.}The righteous shall live by faith;
But {Some ancient authorities read the righteous one.}my righteous one shall live by faith:And if he shrink back, my soul hath no pleasure in him.
Simon, Simon, behold, Satan {Or, obtained you by asking}asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat:
Jehovah is in his holy temple;Jehovah, his throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.
For Jehovah is righteous; He loveth {Or, righteous deeds}righteousness: {Or, His countenance doth behold the upright}The upright shall behold his face.
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
Ye are of God, my little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.
But Jehovah is in his holy temple: {Hebrew: be silent before him, all the earth.}let all the earth keep silence before him.
To-morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the ascent of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel.
Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of Jehovah with you, O Judah and Jerusalem; fear not, nor be dismayed: to-morrow go out against them: for Jehovah is with you.
Jehovah will fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
Be silent, all flesh, before Jehovah; for he is waked up out of his holy habitation.
And we are witnesses {Some ancient authorities add in him.} of these {Greek: sayings.}things; {Some ancient authorities read and God hath given the Holy Spirit to them that obey him.}and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
Let us therefore draw near with boldness unto the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace to help us in time of need.
And when it was day, he came out and went into a desert place: and the multitudes sought after him, and came unto him, and would have stayed him, that he should not go from them.
But he withdrew himself in the deserts, and prayed.
And it came to pass in these days, that he went out into the mountain to pray; and he continued all night in prayer to God.
And it came to pass about eight days after these sayings, that he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up into the mountain to pray.
And it came to pass, as he was praying in a certain place, that when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, even as John also taught his disciples.
They that regard lying vanitiesForsake their own mercy.
And being let go, they came to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said unto them.
And they, when they heard it, lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, O {Greek: Master.}Lord, {Or, thou art he that did make }thou that didst make the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that in them is:
{The Greek text in this clause is somewhat uncertain.}who by the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father David thy servant, didst say, {Psalm 2:1, 2}Why did the {Greek: nations.}Gentiles rage,And the peoples {Or, meditate}imagine vain things?
The kings of the earth set themselves in array,And the rulers were gathered together,Against the Lord, and against his {Greek: Christ.}Anointed:
for of a truth in this city against thy holy {Or, Child See marginal note on chapter 3:13.}Servant Jesus, whom thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the {Greek: nations.}Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, were gathered together,
to do whatsoever thy hand and thy council foreordained to come to pass.
And now, Lord, look upon their threatenings: and grant unto thy {Greek: bondservants.}servants to speak thy word with all boldness,
while thy stretchest forth thy hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of thy holy {Or, Child See marginal note on chapter 3:13.}Servant Jesus.
Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.
but thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jehovah is in his holy temple;Jehovah, his throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.
He layeth up sound wisdom for the upright; {Or, And a shield for &c.}He is a shield to them that walk in integrity;
{Or, Though}Surely he scoffeth at the scoffers; {Or, Yet}But he giveth grace unto the lowly.
Behold, his soul is puffed up, it is not {Or, straight}upright in him; but the righteous shall live {Or, in his faithfulness}by his faith.
Jehovah hath established his throne in the heavens; And his kingdom ruleth over all.
Thus saith Jehovah, Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: what manner of house will ye build unto me? and what place shall be my rest?
{Isaiah 66:1 f.}The heaven is my throne,And the earth the footstool of my feet:What manner of house will ye build me? saith the Lord:Or what is the place of my rest?
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of thy throne:Lovingkindness and truth go before thy face.
Blessed is the people that know the {Or, trumpet sound}joyful sound:They walk, O Jehovah, in the light of thy countenance.
And the Word became flesh, and {Greek: tabernacled}dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, glory as of {Or, an only begotten from a father Compare Hebrews 11:17}the only begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth.
No man hath seen God at any time; {Many very ancient authorities read God only begotten.}the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
Thy throne is established of old:Thou art from everlasting.
Say among the nations, Jehovah reigneth:The world also is established that it cannot be moved:He will judge the peoples with equity
Jehovah is in his holy temple;Jehovah, his throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.
For other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Every one therefore that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them, shall be likened unto a wise man, who built his house upon the rock:
Jehovah is in his holy temple;Jehovah, his throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.
{Or, For the foundations are destroyed; What hath the righteous wrought?}If the foundations be destroyed,What can the righteous do?
Howbeit the firm foundation of God standeth, having this seal, {Numbers 16:5?}The Lord knoweth them that are his: and, {Isaiah 26:13?}Let every one that nameth the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.
Howbeit the firm foundation of God standeth, having this seal, {Numbers 16:5?}The Lord knoweth them that are his: and, {Isaiah 26:13?}Let every one that nameth the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.
And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.
therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Behold, I {Or, have laid}lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner-stone of sure foundation: he that believeth shall not be in haste.
{Or, For the foundations are destroyed; What hath the righteous wrought?}If the foundations be destroyed,What can the righteous do?
He that sitteth in the heavens will laugh:The Lord will have them in derision.
{Or, For the foundations are destroyed; What hath the righteous wrought?}If the foundations be destroyed,What can the righteous do?
that ye were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even {Or, convict}reprove them;
Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers: for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? or what communion hath light with darkness?
And what concord hath Christ with {Greek: Beliar.}Belial? or what portion hath a believer with an unbeliever?
And what agreement hath a {Or, santuary}temple of God with idols? for we are a {Or, santuary}temple of the living God; even as God said, {Leviticus 26:12; Exodus 29:45; Ezekiel 37:27; Jeremiah 31:1.}I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Wherefore {Isaiah 52:11.}Come ye out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord,And touch no unclean thing; And I will receive you,
{Hosea 1:10; Isaiah 43:6.}And will be to you a Father,And ye shall be to me sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
Wherefore, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us have {Or, thankfulness Compare 1 Corinthians 10:30.}grace, whereby we may offer service well-pleasing to God with {Or, godly fear Compare chapter 5:7.}reverence and awe:
Wherefore, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us have {Or, thankfulness Compare 1 Corinthians 10:30.}grace, whereby we may offer service well-pleasing to God with {Or, godly fear Compare chapter 5:7.}reverence and awe:
Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers: for there is no power but of God; and the powers that be are ordained of God.
Put them in mind to be in subjection to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready unto every good work,
Be subject to every {Greek: creation.}ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether to the king, as supreme;
נ NUN.Thy word is a lamp unto my feet,And light unto my path.
But {Some ancient authorities read the righteous one.}my righteous one shall live by faith:And if he shrink back, my soul hath no pleasure in him.
