For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
Deliver me, O Jehovah, from the evil man;
Preserve me from the violent man:
Who devise mischiefs in their heart;
Continually do they {Or, stir up wars}gather themselves together for war.
They have sharpened their tongue like a serpent;
Adders' poison is under their lips.
[Selah
Keep me, O Jehovah, from the hands of the wicked;
Preserve me from the violent man:
Who have purposed to thrust aside my steps.
The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords;
They have spread a net by the wayside;
They have set gins for me.
[Selah
I said unto Jehovah, Thou art my God:
Give ear unto the voice of my supplications, O Jehovah.
O Jehovah the Lord, the strength of my salvation,
Thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.
Grant not, O Jehovah, the desires of the wicked;
Further not his evil device, lest they exalt themselves. [Selah
As for the head of those that compass me about,
Let the mischief of their own lips cover them.
Let burning coals fall upon them:
Let them be cast into the fire,
Into {Or, floods}deep pits, whence they shall not rise.
{Hebrew: A man to tongue.}An evil speaker shall not be established in the earth:
Evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.
I know that Jehovah will maintain the cause of the afflicted,
And justice for the needy.
Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name:
The upright shall dwell in thy presence.
Querverweise zu Psalm 140,5 Ps 140,5
The wicked, in the pride of his countenance, saith, He will not require it.All his thoughts are, There is no God.
His ways are {Or, grievous}firm at all times;Thy judgments are far above out of his sight:As for all his adversaries, he puffeth at them.
He saith in his heart, I shall not be moved;To all generations I shall not be in adversity.
His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and {Or, fraud}oppression:Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.
He sitteth in the lurking-places of the villages;In the secret places doth he murder the innocent;His eyes are privily set against the {Or, hapless}helpless.
He lurketh in secret as a lion in his covert;He lieth in wait to catch the poor:He doth catch the poor, when he draweth him in his net.
{Another reading is, And being crushed.}He croucheth, he boweth down,And the {Or, hapless}helpless fall by his strong ones.
He saith in his heart, God hath forgotten;He hideth his face; he will never see it.
Arise, O Jehovah; O God, lift up thy hand:Forget not the {Or, meek.}poor.
Keep me as the apple of the eye;Hide me under the shadow of thy wings,
From the wicked that oppress me,My deadly enemies, that compass me about.
{Or, They have shut up their heart}They are inclosed in their own fat:With their mouth they speak proudly.
They have now compassed us in our steps;They set their eyes to cast us down to the earth.
He is like a lion that is greedy of his prey,And as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.
Arise, O Jehovah, {Or, Forestall}Confront him, cast him down:Deliver my soul from {Or, the wicked, who is thy sword}the wicked by thy sword;
For without cause have they hid for me {Or, the pit of their net}their net in a pit;Without cause have they digged a pit for my soul.
Let not the foot of pride come against me,And let not the hand of the wicked drive me away.
They have prepared a net for my steps;My soul is bowed down:They have digged a pit before me;They are fallen into the midst thereof themselves. [Selah
The proud have forged a lie against me:With my whole heart will I keep thy precepts.
The proud have digged pits for me,Who are not according to thy law.
The wicked have laid a snare for me;Yet have I not gone astray from thy precepts.
Have mercy upon us, O Jehovah, have mercy upon us;For we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
Our soul is exceedingly filledWith the scoffing of those that are at ease,And with the contempt of the proud.
Keep me from the snare which they have laid for me,And from the gins of the workers of iniquity.
Let the wicked fall into their own nets,Whilst that I withal {Hebrew: pass over.}escape.
When my spirit {Or, fainted}was overwhelmed within me,Thou knewest my path.In the way wherein I walkHave they hidden a snare for me.
A man that flattereth his neighborSpreadeth a net for his steps.
Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.
Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before thee to speak good for them, to turn away thy wrath from them.
Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them; for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.
And when he was come out from thence, the scribes and the Pharisees began to {Or, set themselves vehemently against him}press upon him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of {Or, more}many things;
laying wait for him, to catch something out of his mouth.
And they watched him, and sent forth spies, who feigned themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his speech, so as to deliver him up to the {Or, ruling power}rule and to the authority of the governor.
And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person of any, but of a truth teachest the way of God:
Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cæsar, or not?
But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them,
