A Psalm of the sons of Korah; a Song. {Or, His foundation in the holy mountains Jehovah loveth, even the gates &c.}His foundation is in the holy mountains.
Jehovah loveth the gates of ZionMore than all the dwellings of Jacob.
Glorious things are spoken of thee,O city of God. [Selah
A Prayer of David.Bow down thine ear, O Jehovah, and answer me;For I am poor and needy.
Preserve my soul; for I am godly:O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.
Be merciful unto me, O Lord;For unto thee do I cry all the day long.
Rejoice the soul of thy servant;For unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive,And abundant in lovingkindness unto all them that call upon thee.
Give ear, O Jehovah, unto my prayer;And hearken unto the voice of my supplications.
In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee;For thou wilt answer me.
There is none like unto thee among the gods, O Lord;Neither are there any works like unto thy works.
All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord;And they shall glorify thy name.
For thou art great, and doest wondrous things:Thou art God alone.
Teach me thy way, O Jehovah;I will walk in thy truth:Unite my heart to fear thy name.
I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with my whole heart;And I will glorify thy name for evermore.
For great is thy lovingkindness toward me;And thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest Sheol.
O God, the proud are risen up against me,And a company of violent men have sought after my soul,And have not set thee before them.
But thou, O Lord, art a God merciful and gracious,Slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness and truth.
Oh turn unto me, and {Or, be gracious unto}have mercy upon me;Give thy strength unto thy servant,And save the son of thy handmaid.
Show me a token for good,That they who hate me may see it, and be put to shame,Because thou, Jehovah, hast helped me, and comforted me.
All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord;And they shall glorify thy name.
And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, that ye who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
For the Chief Musician. Maschil of the sons of Korah.As the hart panteth after the water brooks,So panteth my soul after thee, O God.
A Song; a Psalm of the sons of Korah.Great is Jehovah, and greatly to be praised,In the city of our God, in his holy mountain.
For the Chief Musician. A Psalm. A Song of David. {Or, There shall be silence before thee, and praise, O God &c.}Praise waiteth for thee, O God, in Zion;And unto thee shall the vow be performed.
and so all Israel shall be saved: even as it is written, {Isaiah 59:20 f.}There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer;He shall turn away {Greek: ungodlinesses.}ungodliness from Jacob:
The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
And it shall come to pass in the latter days, that the mountain of Jehovah's house shall be established {Or, at the head}on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
And many peoples shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of Jehovah, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth {Or, instruction}the law, and the word of Jehovah from Jerusalem.
And he will judge {Or, among}between the nations, and will decide concerning many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth,Is mount Zion, on the sides of the north,The city of the great King.
for he looked for the city which hath the foundations, whose {Or, architect}builder and maker is God.
What then shall one answer the messengers of the nation? That Jehovah hath founded Zion, and in her shall the afflicted of his people take refuge.
I cry unto Jehovah with my voice,And he answereth me out of his holy hill. [Selah
A Psalm of David.Jehovah, who shall sojourn in thy {Hebrew: tent.}tabernacle?Who shall dwell in thy holy hill?
Exalt ye Jehovah our God,And worship at his holy hill;For Jehovah our God is holy.
But unto the place which Jehovah your God shall choose out of all your tribes, to put his name there, even unto his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come;
but in the place which Jehovah shall choose in one of thy tribes, there thou shalt offer thy burnt-offerings, and there thou shalt do all that I command thee.
but thou shalt eat them before Jehovah thy God in the place which Jehovah thy God shall choose, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy man-servant, and thy maid-servant, and the Levite that is within thy gates: and thou shalt rejoice before Jehovah thy God in all that thou puttest thy hand unto.
If the place which Jehovah thy God shall choose, to put his name there, be too far from thee, then thou shalt kill of thy herd and of thy flock, which Jehovah hath given thee, as I have commanded thee; and thou mayest eat within thy gates, after all the desire of thy soul.
And the word of Jehovah came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and {Or, cry}preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of Jehovah. Now Nineveh was {Hebrew: a city great upon God.}an exceeding great city, of three days' journey.
And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
And the people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
{Or, For word came unto the king &c.}And the tidings reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
And he made proclamation and {Hebrew: said}published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water;
but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and beast, and let them cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in his hands.
Who knoweth whether God will not turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil which he said he would do unto them; and he did it not.
So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of Jehovah. Now Nineveh was {Hebrew: a city great upon God.}an exceeding great city, of three days' journey.
It shall be eighteen thousand reeds round about: and the name of the city from that day shall be, {Hebrew: Jehovah-shammah.}Jehovah is there.
And I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on the mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty and four thousand, having his name, and the name of his Father, written on their foreheads.
And the sons of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee The city of Jehovah, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
According to the grace of God which was given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder I laid a foundation; and another buildeth thereon. But let each man take heed how he buildeth thereon.
And I also say unto thee, that thou art {Greek: Petros.}Peter, and upon this {Greek: petra.}rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
being built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief corner stone;
Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Yet again shall they use this speech in the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, when I shall {Or, return to}bring again their captivity: Jehovah bless thee, O habitation of righteousness, O mountain of holiness.
But chose the tribe of Judah,The mount Zion which he loved.
For thou art a holy people unto Jehovah thy God: Jehovah thy God hath chosen thee to be a people for his own possession, {Or, out of}above all peoples that are upon the face of the earth.
Jehovah did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all peoples:
but because Jehovah loveth you, and because he would keep the oath which he sware unto your fathers, hath Jehovah brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
Again the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,
Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations;
and say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah unto Jerusalem: {Or, Thine origin}Thy birth and thy nativity is of the land of the Canaanite; the Amorite was thy father, and thy mother was a Hittite.
And as for thy nativity, in the day thou wast born thy navel was not cut, neither wast thou washed in water to cleanse thee; thou wast not salted at all, nor swaddled at all.
No eye pitied thee, to do any of these things unto thee, to have compassion upon thee; but thou wast cast out in the open field, for that thy person was abhorred, in the day that thou wast born.
And when I passed by thee, and saw thee weltering in thy blood, I said unto thee, Though thou art in thy blood, live; yea, I said unto thee, Though thou art in thy blood, live.
I {Hebrew: made thee a myriad.}caused thee to multiply as that which groweth in the field, and thou didst increase and wax great, and thou attainedst to {Hebrew: ornament of ornaments.}excellent ornament; thy breasts were fashioned, and thy hair was grown; yet thou wast naked and bare.
Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness: yea, I sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord Jehovah, and thou becamest mine.
Now Boaz went up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the near kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down.
And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down.
And he said unto the near kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth the parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech's:
and I thought to {Hebrew: uncover thine ear.}disclose it unto thee, saying, Buy it before them that sit here, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if {So Septuagint, Vulgate, and Syriac. Hebrew: he will.}thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know; for there is none to redeem it besides thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.
Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.
And the near kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: take thou my right of redemption on thee; for I cannot redeem it.
Now this was the custom in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning exchanging, to confirm all things: a man drew off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbor; and this was the manner of attestation in Israel.
So the near kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thyself. And he drew off his shoe.
And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi.
Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.
And Jehovah said, Call his name {That is, Not my people.}Lo-ammi; for ye are not my people, and I will not be {Hebrew: for you.}your God.
Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east.
And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth shined with his glory.
And it was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, even according to the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city; and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell upon my face.
And the glory of Jehovah came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east.
And the Spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of Jehovah filled the house.
And I heard one speaking unto me out of the house; and a man stood by me.
And he said unto me, Son of man, this is the place of my throne, and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever. And the house of Israel shall no more defile my holy name, neither they, nor their kings, by their whoredom, and by the dead bodies of their kings {Or, according to another reading, in their death.}in their high places;
It shall be eighteen thousand reeds round about: and the name of the city from that day shall be, {Hebrew: Jehovah-shammah.}Jehovah is there.
