A Song, a Psalm of Asaph.
O God, keep not thou silence:
Hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.
 For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult;
And they that hate thee have lifted up the head.
 They take crafty counsel against thy people,
And consult together against thy hidden ones.
 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation;
That the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.
 For they have consulted together with one consent;
Against thee do they make a covenant:
 The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites;
Moab, and the  {Or, Hagrites   See 1 Chronicles 5:10.}Hagarenes;
 Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek;
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre:
 Assyria also is joined with them;
They have {Hebrew: been an arm to the children of Lot.}helped the children of Lot. [Selah
 Do thou unto them as unto Midian,
As to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the river Kishon;
 Who perished at Endor,
Who became as dung for the earth.
 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb;
Yea, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna;
 Who said, Let us take to ourselves in possession
The  {Or, pastures}habitations of God.
 O my God, make them like the whirling dust;
As stubble before the wind.
 As the fire that burneth the forest,
And as the flame that setteth the mountains on fire,
 So pursue them with thy tempest,
And terrify them with thy storm.
 Fill their faces with confusion,
That they may seek thy name, O Jehovah.
 Let them be put to shame and dismayed for ever;
Yea, let them be confounded and perish;
 That they may know that {Or, thou whose name alone is Jehovah, art &c.}thou alone, whose name is Jehovah,
Art the Most High over all the earth.
Querverweise zu Psalm 83,2 Ps 83,2
Why do the nations {Or, tumultuously assemble}rage,And the peoples meditate a vain thing?
The haters of Jehovah should {Or, yield feigned obedience Hebrew: lie.}submit themselves unto him:But their time should endure for ever.
I said unto the {Or, fools}arrogant, Deal not arrogantly;And to the wicked, Lift not up the horn:
The kings of the earth set themselves,And the rulers take counsel together,Against Jehovah, and against his anointed, saying,
Lift not up your horn on high;Speak not {Or, insolently with a haughty neck}with a stiff neck.
Thine adversaries have roared in the midst of thine assembly;They have set up their ensigns for signs.
The floods have lifted up, O Jehovah,The floods have lifted up their voice;The floods lift up their {Or, roaring}waves.
Forget not the voice of thine adversaries:The tumult of those that rise up against thee {Or, which ascendeth}ascendeth continually.
Whom hast thou defied and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
Because of thy raging against me, and because {Or, thy careless ease}thine arrogancy is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:
and he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the beasts', and his dwelling was with the wild asses; he was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; until he knew that the Most High God ruleth in the kingdom of men, and that he setteth up over it whomsoever he will.
And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thy heart, though thou knewest all this,
but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine from them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified.
Because of thy raging against me, and because {Or, thy careless ease}thine arrogancy is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee, saith Jehovah, to deliver thee.
So when Pilate saw that he prevailed nothing, but rather that a tumult was arising, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man; see ye to it.
{The Greek text in this clause is somewhat uncertain.}who by the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father David thy servant, didst say, {Psalm 2:1, 2}Why did the {Greek: nations.}Gentiles rage,And the peoples {Or, meditate}imagine vain things?

And when the townclerk had quieted the multitude, he saith, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great {Greek: Artemis.}Diana, and of the image which fell down from {Or, heaven}Jupiter?
Seeing then that these things cannot be gainsaid, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.
For ye have brought hither these men, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.
If therefore Demetrius, and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, {Or, court days are kept}the courts are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.
But if ye seek anything about other matters, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.
For indeed we are in danger to be {Or, accused of riot concerning this day}accused concerning this day's riot, there being no cause for it: and as touching it we shall not be able to give account of this concourse.
