My son, if sinners entice thee,Consent thou not.
If they say, Come with us,Let us lay wait for blood;Let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause;
Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, {Or, Even the perfect}And whole, as those that go down into the pit;
We shall find all precious substance;We shall fill our houses with spoil;
{Or, Cast in thy lot}Thou shalt cast thy lot among us;We will all have one purse:
My son, walk not thou in the way with them;Refrain thy foot from their path:
For their feet run to evil,And they make haste to shed blood.
For in vain is the net spreadIn the sight of any bird:
And these lay wait for their own blood;They lurk privily for their own lives.
So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain;It taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was {Or, desireable to look upon}to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.
But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master {Or, knoweth not with me what is &c.}knoweth not what is with me in the house, and he hath put all that he hath into my hand:
he is not greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back anything from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou {Or, bear witness}speak in a cause to turn aside after a multitude to wrest justice:
But if any man hate his neighbor, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally so that he dieth, and he flee into one of these cities;
And they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,
and see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which Jehovah God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of {Or, all the trees}any tree of the garden?
And the woman said unto the serpent, Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat:
but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as {Or, gods}God, knowing good and evil.
And Cain {Hebrew: said unto.}told Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
And the earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
For without cause have they hid for me {Or, the pit of their net}their net in a pit;Without cause have they digged a pit for my soul.
And Cain {Hebrew: said unto.}told Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into Sheol: and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.
And Jehovah said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: am I my brother's keeper?
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
But the husbandmen, when they saw the son, said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and take his inheritance.
But they that are minded to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts, such as drown men in destruction and perdition.
For the love of money is a root of all {Or, evils.}kinds of evil: which some reaching after have been led astray from the faith, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, {Or, stedfastness}patience, meekness.
I have refrained my feet from every evil way,That I might observe thy word.
Be not deceived: Evil companionships corrupt good morals.
Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation and destruction are in their {Or, highways}paths.
He hath made a pit, and digged it,And is fallen into the ditch which he made.
His mischief shall return upon his own head,And his violence shall come down upon his own pate.
For he is cast into a net by his own feet,And he walketh upon the toils.
Then said Harbonah, one of the chamberlains that were before the king, Behold also, the {Hebrew: tree.}gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman hath made for Mordecai, who spake good for the king, standeth in the house of Haman. And the king said, Hang him thereon.
So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.
So are the paths of all that forget God;And the hope of the godless man shall perish:
to them that by {Or, stedfastness}patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and incorruption, eternal life:
But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sorrowful; for he was one that had great possessions.
And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.
