Versliste
Jesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold, the man!
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the {Or, earth}land until the ninth hour.
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, {Psalm 22:1}Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, {Or, why didst thou forsake me?}why hast thou forsaken me?
And some of them that stood there, when they heard it, said, This man calleth Elijah.
And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole {Or, earth}land until the ninth hour.
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, {Psalm 22:1.}My God, my God, {Or, why didst thou forsake me?}why hast thou forsaken me?
And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elijah.
And it was now about the sixth hour, and a darkness came over the whole {Or, earth}land until the ninth hour,
{Greek: the sun failing.}the sun's light failing: and the veil of the {Or, sanctuary}temple was rent in the midst.
and he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.
On the morrow he seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God, that {Or, beareth the sin}taketh away the sin of the world!
And it was now about the sixth hour, and a darkness came over the whole {Or, earth}land until the ninth hour,
{Greek: the sun failing.}the sun's light failing: and the veil of the {Or, sanctuary}temple was rent in the midst.
Thy wrath lieth hard upon me,And thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. [Selah
{Or, From}By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who among them considered that he was cut off out of the land of the {Or, living? for the transgression of my people was he stricken}living for the transgression of my people to whom the stroke was due?
And they made his grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death; {Or, because}although he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
Yet it pleased Jehovah to bruise him; he hath {Hebrew: made him sick.}put him to grief: {Or, when his soul shall make an offering}when thou shalt make his soul {Hebrew: a trespass-offering.}an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of Jehovah shall prosper in his hand.
{Or, He shall see and be satisfied with the travil &c.}He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: {Or, by his knowledge}by the knowledge of himself shall my righteous servant {Or, make many righteous}justify many; and he shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out his soul unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors: yet he bare the sin of many, and {Or, maketh}made intercession for the transgressors.
Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit,In dark places, in the deeps.
For dogs have compassed me:A company of evil-doers have inclosed me; {So the Septuagint Version, Vulgate, and Syriac. The Hebrew text as pointed reads, Like a lion, my &c.}They pierced my hands and my feet.
He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he opened not his mouth; as a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, {Psalm 22:1}Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, {Or, why didst thou forsake me?}why hast thou forsaken me?
Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by?Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is brought upon me, {Or, Whom Jehovah hath afflicted}Wherewith Jehovah hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.
At that season Jesus answered and said, I {Or, praise}thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou didst hide these things from the wise and understanding, and didst reveal them unto babes:
These things spake Jesus; and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that the Son may glorify thee:
And I am no more in the world, and these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep them in thy name which thou hast given me, that they may be one, even as we are.
O righteous Father, the world knew thee not, but I knew thee; and these knew that thou didst send me;
And he went forward a little, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass away from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.
Again a second time he went away, and prayed, saying, My Father, if this cannot pass away, except I drink it, thy will be done.
And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; remove this cup from me: howbeit not what I will, but what thou wilt.
{Some ancient authorities omit And Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.}And Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And parting his garments among them, they cast lots.
He was despised, and {Or, forsaken}rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with {Hebrew: sickness.}grief: and {Or, he hid as it were his face from us}as one from whom men hide their face he was despised; and we esteemed him not.
who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
Him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf; that we might become the righteousness of God in him.
then hath he said, Lo, I am come to do thy will. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great assembly;Lo, I will not refrain my lips,O Jehovah, thou knowest.
And Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took in his hand the fire and the knife; and they went both of them together.
And Abraham said, God will {Hebrew: see for himself.}provide himself the lamb for a burnt-offering, my son: so they went both of them together.
And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.
And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
And the angel of Jehovah called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
And he said, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him; for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, from me.
{Many ancient authorities omit verse 43, 44.}And there appeared unto him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.
Mine eye wasteth away by reason of affliction:I have called daily upon thee, O Jehovah;I have spread forth my hands unto thee.
Wilt thou show wonders to the dead?Shall {Or, the shades Hebrew: Rephaim.}they that are decreased arise and praise thee? [Selah
Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave?Or thy faithfulness in {Hebrew: Abaddon. See Job 26:6.}Destruction?
Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? And thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
But unto thee, O Jehovah, have I cried; And in the morning shall my prayer come before thee.
Jehovah, why castest thou off my soul? Why hidest thou thy face from me?
I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up:While I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.
Thy fierce wrath is gone over me;Thy terrors have cut me off.
Many bulls have compassed me;Strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
They gape upon me with their mouth,As a ravening and a roaring lion.
I am poured out like water,And all my bones are out of joint:My heart is like wax;It is melted within me.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd; And my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; And thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
For dogs have compassed me:A company of evil-doers have inclosed me; {So the Septuagint Version, Vulgate, and Syriac. The Hebrew text as pointed reads, Like a lion, my &c.}They pierced my hands and my feet.
I may count all my bones.They look and stare upon me;
They part my garments among them,And upon my vesture do they cast lots.
Deliver my soul from the sword,My {Or, dear life Hebrew: only one.}darling from the power of the dog.
They cried unto thee, and were delivered:They trusted in thee, and were not put to shame.
But I am a worm, and no man;A reproach of men, and despised of the people.
I have been young, and now am old;Yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken,Nor his seed begging bread.
Many bulls have compassed me;Strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou answerest not;And in the night season, {Or, but find no rest}and am not silent.
Why standest thou afar off, O Jehovah? Why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?
As with {Or, crushing}a sword in my bones, mine adversaries reproach me,While they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
For thou art the God of my strength; why hast thou cast me off?Why go I mourning {Or, while the enemy oppresseth}because of the oppression of the enemy?
I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up:While I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.
Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon him, went forth, and saith unto them, Whom seek ye?
And some of them that stood there, when they heard it, said, This man calleth Elijah.
And the rest said, Let be; let us see whether Elijah cometh to save him. {Many ancient authorities add And another took a spear and pierced his side, and there came out water and blood. See John 19:34.}
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
For what the law could not do, {Greek: wherein.}in that it was weak through the flesh, God, sending his own Son in the likeness of {Greek: flesh of sin.}sinful flesh {Or, and as an offering for sin Leviticus 7:37 & c. Hebrews 10:6 & c. }and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us; for it is written, {Deuteronomy 21:23.}Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Every male among the children of Aaron shall eat of it, as his portion for ever throughout your generations, from the offerings of Jehovah made by fire: whosoever toucheth them shall be holy.
And this is the law of the trespass-offering: it is most holy.
Then shall he kill the goat of the sin-offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the veil, and do with his blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy-seat, and before the mercy-seat:
For the bodies of those beasts whose blood is brought into the holy place {Greek: through.}by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned without the camp.
Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people through his own blood, suffered without the gate.
who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
who his own self {Or, carried up…to the tree Compare Colossians 2:14; 1 Macc. 4.53 (Greek:).}bare our sins in his body upon the tree, that we, having died unto sins, might live unto righteousness; by whose {Greek: bruise.}stripes ye were healed.
so Christ also, having been once offered to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time, apart from sin, to them that wait for him, unto salvation.
Him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf; that we might become the righteousness of God in him.
Set me as a seal upon thy heart,As a seal upon thine arm:For love is strong as death;Jealousy is {Hebrew: hard.}cruel as Sheol; The flashes thereof are flashes of fire, {Or, A most vehement flame}A very flame of {Hebrew: Jah.}Jehovah.
Many waters cannot quench love,Neither can floods drown it:If a man would give all the substance of his house for love, {Or, It}He would utterly be contemned.
and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loveth us, and {Many authorities, some ancient, read washed. Hebrews 9:14; compare chapter 7:14.}loosed us from our sins {Greek: in.}by his blood;
and he made us to be a kingdom, to be priests unto {Or, God and his Father}his God and Father; to him be the glory and the dominion {Greek: unto the ages of the ages. Many ancient authorities omit of the ages.}for ever and ever. Amen.
Yet Jehovah will command his lovingkindness in the day-time;And in the night his song shall be with me,Even a prayer unto the God of my life.
And I said, I am cast out from before thine eyes;Yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
I am reckoned with them that go down into the pit;I am as a man that hath no help,
