Versliste
There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was {Hebrew: Iyob.}Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.
And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
His {Or, cattle}substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.
And his sons went and held a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they Sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and {Or, blasphemed So verse 11, chapter 2:5, 9.}renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that {That is, the Adversary.}Satan also came among them.
And Jehovah said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? {Or, that}for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil.
Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his {Or, cattle}substance is increased in the land.
But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face.
And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy {Hebrew: hand.}power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.
And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,
that there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them;
and {Hebrew: Sheba.}the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away: yea, they have slain the {Hebrew: young men.}servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep and the {Hebrew: young men.}servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and {Or, made a raid}fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the {Hebrew: young men.}servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house;
and, behold, there came a great wind {Or, over}from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;
and he said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah.
In all this Job sinned not, nor {Or, attributed folly to God}charged God foolishly.
Lo, all these things doth God work,Twice, yea thrice, with a man,
For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.They are corrupt, they have done abominable works;There is none that doeth good.
Jehovah looked down from heaven upon the children of men,To see if there were any that did {Or, deal wisely}understand,That did seek after God.
They are all gone aside; they are together become filthy;There is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge,Who eat up my people as they eat bread,And call not upon Jehovah?
There were they in great fear;For God is in the generation of the righteous.
Ye put to shame the counsel of the poor, {Or, But}Because Jehovah is his refuge.
Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion!When Jehovah {Or, returned to}bringeth back the captivity of his people,Then shall Jacob rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.
Behold, Jehovah's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, so that he will not hear.
For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue muttereth wickedness.
None {Hebrew: called.}sueth in righteousness, and none pleadeth in truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.
They hatch adders' eggs, and weave the spider's web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth; and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.
Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.
Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation and destruction are in their {Or, highways}paths.
The way of peace they know not; and there is no justice in their goings: they have made them crooked paths; whosoever goeth therein doth not know peace.
Therefore is justice far from us, neither doth righteousness overtake us: we look for light, but, behold, darkness; for brightness, but we walk in obscurity.
We grope for the wall like the blind; yea, we grope as they that have no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the twilight; {Or, we are in dark places like the dead}among them that are lusty we are as dead men.
We roar all like bears, and moan sore like doves: we look for justice, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.
For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us, and as for our iniquities, we know them:
transgressing and denying Jehovah, and turning away from following our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.
And justice is turned away backward, and righteousness standeth afar off; for truth is fallen in the street, and uprightness cannot enter.
Yea, truth is lacking; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey.And Jehovah saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice.
And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was {Or, none to interpose}no intercessor: therefore his own arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it upheld him.
And he put on righteousness as a {Or, coat of mail}breastplate, and {Or, salvation for a helmet}a helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a mantle.
According to their {Hebrew: recompenses.}deeds, accordingly he will repay, wrath to his adversaries, recompense to his enemies; to the {Or, coast-lands}islands he will repay recompense.
So shall they fear the name of Jehovah from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun; {Or, when the adversary shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of Jehovah will lift up a standard against them}for he will come as {Hebrew: a stream pent in.}a rushing stream, which the breath of Jehovah driveth.
And a Redeemer will come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith Jehovah.
And as for me, this is my covenant with them, saith Jehovah: my Spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seeds seed, saith Jehovah, from henceforth and for ever.
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing;But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
That forsaketh the {Or, guide}friend of her youth,And forgetteth the covenant of her God:
Who knoweth not {Or, by}in all these,That the hand of Jehovah hath wrought this,
