A soft answer turneth away wrath;
But a grievous word stirreth up anger.
The tongue of the wise uttereth knowledge aright;
But the mouth of fools poureth out folly.
The eyes of Jehovah are in every place,
Keeping watch upon the evil and the good.

And he that hateth reproof shall die.
Sheol and {Or, Destruction}Abaddon are before Jehovah:
How much more then the hearts of the children of men!
A scoffer loveth not to be reproved;
He will not go unto the wise.
A glad heart maketh a cheerful countenance;
But by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken.
The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge;
But the mouth of fools feedeth on folly.
All the days of the afflicted are evil;
But he that is of a cheerful heart hath a continual feast.
Better is little, with the fear of Jehovah,
Than great treasure and trouble therewith.
Better is a {Or, portion}dinner of herbs, where love is,
Than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.
A wrathful man stirreth up contention;
But he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.
The way of the sluggard is as a hedge of thorns;
But the path of the upright is made a highway.
A wise son maketh a glad father;
But a foolish man despiseth his mother.
Folly is joy to him that is void of {Hebrew: heart.}wisdom;
But a man of understanding maketh straight his going.

But in the multitude of counsellors they are established.
A man hath joy in the answer of his mouth;
And a word in due season, how good is it!
To the wise the way of life goeth upward,
That he may depart from Sheol beneath.
Jehovah will root up the house of the proud;
But he will establish the border of the widow.
Evil devices are an abomination to Jehovah;
But {Or, the pure speak pleasant words}pleasant words are pure.
He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house;
But he that hateth bribes shall live.
The heart of the righteous studieth to answer;
But the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.
Jehovah is far from the wicked;
But he heareth the prayer of the righteous.
The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart;
And good tidings make the bones fat.
The ear that hearkeneth to the reproof of life
Shall abide among the wise.
He that refuseth {Or, instruction}correction despiseth his own soul;
But he that hearkeneth to reproof getteth {Hebrew: heart.}understanding.
The fear of Jehovah is the instruction of wisdom;
And before honor goeth humility.

The mouth of the righteous talketh of wisdom,And his tongue speaketh justice.
The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver:The heart of the wicked is little worth.
Thou art fairer than the children of men;Grace is poured {Or, upon}into thy lips:Therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.
The lips of the righteous feed many;But the foolish die for lack of {Hebrew: heart.}understanding.
Then will I teach transgressors thy ways;And sinners shall {Or, return}be converted unto thee.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation;And my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
O Lord, open thou my lips;And my mouth shall show forth thy praise.
Ye offspring of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
My mouth shall tell of thy righteousness,And of thy salvation all the day;For I know not the numbers thereof.
I will come {Or, in the strength}with the mighty acts of the Lord Jehovah:I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.
O God, thou hast taught me from my youth;And hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.
Yea, even {Hebrew: unto old age and gray hairs.}when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not,Until I have declared {Hebrew: thine arm.}thy strength unto the next generation,Thy might to every one that is to come.
And the tongue is {Or, a fire, that world of iniquity: the tongue is among our members that which &c.}a fire: the {Or, that world of iniquity: the tongue, is among our members that which &c.}world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of {Or, birth}nature, and is set on fire by {Greek: Gehenna.}hell.
I will open my mouth in a parable;I will utter dark sayings of old,
Which we have heard and known,And our fathers have told us.
We will not hide them from their children,Telling to the generation to come the praises of Jehovah,And his strength, and his wondrous works that he hath done.
For he established a testimony in Jacob,And appointed a law in Israel,Which he commanded our fathers,That they should make them known to their children;
That the generation to come might know them, even the children that should be born;Who should arise and tell them to their children,
With my lips have I declaredAll the ordinances of thy mouth.
And further, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he {Or, gave ear}pondered, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, {Isaiah 52:7}How beautiful are the feet of them that bring {Or, a gospel}glad tidings of good things!
But they did not all hearken to the {Or, gospel}glad tidings. For Isaiah saith, {Isaiah 53:1}Lord, who hath believed our report?
So belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
For I will not dare to speak of any {Greek: of those things which Christ wrought not through me.}things save those which Christ wrought through me, for the obedience of the {Greek: nations. Compare Matthew 4.15.}Gentiles, by word and deed,

Compare Colossians 1:25.}fully preached the {See marginal note on chapter 1:1}gospel of Christ;
yea, {Greek: being ambitious. 2 Corinthians 5:9; 1 Thessalonians 4:11}making it my aim so to {See marginal note on chapter 1:15}preach the gospel, not where Christ was already named, that I might not build upon another man's foundation;
but, as it is written, {Isaiah 52:15}They shall see, to whom no tidings of him came,And they who have not heard shall understand.
Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for {Greek: the building up of the need.}edifying as the need may be, that it may give grace to them that hear.
And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
