For the Chief Musician; set to Al-tashheth. A Psalm of David. Michtam.
{Or, Is the righteousness ye should speak dumb?}Do ye indeed {Or, as otherwise read, O ye gods Or, O ye mighty ones}in silence speak righteousness?
Do ye {Or, judge uprightly the sons of men}judge uprightly, O ye sons of men?
Nay, in heart ye work wickedness;
Ye weigh out the violence of your hands in the earth.
The wicked are estranged from the womb:
They go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.
Their poison is like the poison of a serpent:
They are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear,
Which hearkeneth not to the voice of {Or, enchanters}charmers,
Charming never so wisely.
Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth:
Break out the great teeth of the young lions, O Jehovah.
Let them melt away as water that runneth apace:
When he aimeth his arrows, let them be as though they were cut off.
Let them be as a snail which melteth and passeth away,
Like the untimely birth of a woman, {Or, like them that have not seen the sun}that hath not seen the sun.
Before your pots can feel the thorns,
{Or, Wrath shall take them away while living as with a whirlwind}He will take them away with a whirlwind, the green and the burning alike.
The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance:
He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked;
So that men shall say, Verily there is {Hebrew: fruit.}a reward for the righteous:
Verily there is a God that judgeth in the earth.
Querverweise zu Psalm 58,11 Ps 58,11
Surely in vain have I cleansed my heart,And washed my hands in innocency;
For all the day long have I been plagued,And {Hebrew: my chastisement was.}chastened every morning.
If I had said, I will speak thus;Behold, I had dealt treacherously with the generation of thy children.
Say ye of the righteous, that it shall be well with him; for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
Jehovah hath made himself known, he hath executed judgment: {Or, He snareth the wicked}The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. [Higgaion. Selah.
To show that Jehovah is upright;He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
What fruit then had ye at that time in the things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
And all men shall fear;And they shall declare the work of God,And shall wisely consider of his doing.
Ye have said, It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept his charge, and that we have walked {Or, in mourning apparel}mournfully before Jehovah of hosts?
But now being made free from sin and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end eternal life.
Oh let the nations be glad and sing for joy;For thou wilt judge the peoples with equity,And {Hebrew: lead.}govern the nations upon earth. [Selah
but after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up for thyself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
Behold, the eye of Jehovah is upon them that fear him,Upon them that {Or, wait for}hope in his lovingkindness;
Before Jehovah; for he cometh,For he cometh to judge the earth:He will judge the world with righteousness,And the peoples {Or, in his faithfulness}with his truth.
Before Jehovah; for he cometh to judge the earth:He will judge the world with righteousness,And the peoples with equity.
Ye have wearied Jehovah with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? In that ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of Jehovah, and he delighteth in them; or where is the God of justice?
and saying, Where is the promise of his {Greek: presence.}coming? for, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
For this they wilfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth compacted out of water and {Or, through}amidst water, by the word of God;
by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been {Or, stored with fire}stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
But forget not this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the {Or, heavenly bodies}elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be {The most ancient manuscripts read discovered.}burned up.
