{Or, Why is it, seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty, That they who know him see not his days? }Why are times not laid up by the Almighty?
And why do not they that know him see his days?
There are that remove the landmarks;
They violently take away flocks, and feed them.
They drive away the ass of the fatherless;
They take the widow's ox for a pledge.
They turn the needy out of the way:
The {Or, meek}poor of the earth all hide themselves.
Behold, as wild asses in the desert
They go forth to their work, seeking diligently for {Hebrew: prey.}food;
The wilderness yieldeth them bread for their children.
They cut {Or, his}their provender in the field;
And they glean the vintage of the wicked.
They lie all night naked without clothing,
And have no covering in the cold.
They are wet with the showers of the mountains,
And embrace the rock for want of a shelter.
There are that pluck the fatherless from the breast,
And {Or, take in pledge that which is on the poor}take a pledge of the poor;
So that they go about naked without clothing,
And being hungry they carry the sheaves.
They make oil within the walls of these men;
They tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst.
From out of the {Hebrew: city of men.}populous city men groan,
And the soul of the wounded crieth out:
Yet God regardeth not the folly.
These are of them that rebel against the light;
They know not the ways thereof,
Nor abide in the paths thereof.
The murderer riseth with the light;
He killeth the poor and needy;
And in the night he is as a thief.
The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight,
Saying, No eye shall see me:
And he {Or, putteth a covering on his face}disguiseth his face.
In the dark they dig through houses:
{Or, Which they had marked for themselves}They shut themselves up in the day-time;
They know not the light.
For {Or, thick darkness is to all of them as the morning; For they &c.}the morning is to all of them as thick darkness;
For they know the terrors of the thick darkness.
{Or, Ye say, Swiftly &c. Hebrew: Swift is he &c.}Swiftly they pass away upon the face of the waters;
Their portion is cursed in the earth:
They turn not into the way of the vineyards.
Drought and heat consume the snow waters:
So doth Sheol those that have sinned.
The womb shall forget him;
The worm shall feed sweetly on him;
He shall be no more remembered;
And unrighteousness shall be broken {Or, as a tree; even he that devoureth &c.}as a tree.
He devoureth the barren that beareth not,
And doeth not good to the widow.
Yet God preserveth the mighty by his power:
He riseth up that hath no assurance of life.
God giveth them to be in security, and they rest thereon;
{Or, But}And his eyes are upon their ways.
They are exalted; yet a little while, and they are gone;
{Or, And when they are &c.}Yea, they are brought low, they are {Or, gather in}taken out of the way as all others,
And are cut off as the tops of the ears of grain.
And if it be not so now, who will prove me a liar,
And make my speech nothing worth?

If I have said to {Or, the pit}corruption, Thou art my father;To the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister;
The memory of the righteous is blessed;But the name of the wicked shall rot.
For there is hope of a tree,If it be cut down, that it will sprout again,And that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
Though the root thereof wax old in the earth,And the stock thereof die in the ground;
Yet through the scent of water it will bud,And put forth boughs like a plant.
But man dieth, and is laid low:Yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?
{Or, And after my skin hath been thus destroyed, Yet from my flesh shall I see God}And after my skin, even this body, is destroyed,Then without my flesh shall I see God;
So I saw the wicked buried, {Or, who had come and gone away from the holy place; and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done Or, and men came and went &c.}and they came to the grave; and they that had done right went away from the holy place, and were forgotten in the city: this also is vanity.
His roots shall be dried up beneath,And above shall his branch {Or, wither}be cut off.
{Or, The dead live not, the deceased rise not}They are dead, they shall not live; they are {Or, shades Hebrew: Rephaim.}deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all remembrance of them to perish.
His remembrance shall perish from the earth,And he shall have no name in the street.
He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from its branches.
And even now the axe lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
