A Psalm of David; {See 1 Samuel 21:10-15}when he {Or, feigned madness}changed his behavior before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed.I will bless Jehovah at all times:His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul shall make her boast in Jehovah:The meek shall hear thereof, and be glad.
Oh magnify Jehovah with me,And let us exalt his name together.
I sought Jehovah, and he answered me,And delivered me from all my fears.
They looked unto him, and were radiant;And their faces shall never be confounded.
This poor man cried, and Jehovah heard him,And saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of Jehovah encampeth round about them that fear him,And delivereth them.
Oh taste and see that Jehovah is good:Blessed is the man that taketh refuge in him.
Oh fear Jehovah, ye his saints;For there is no want to them that fear him.
The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger;But they that seek Jehovah shall not want any good thing.
Come, ye children, hearken unto me:I will teach you the fear of Jehovah.
What man is he that desireth life,And loveth many days, that he may see good?
Keep thy tongue from evil,And thy lips from speaking guile.
Depart from evil, and do good;Seek peace, and pursue it.
The eyes of Jehovah are toward the righteous,And his ears are open unto their cry.
The face of Jehovah is against them that do evil,To cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
The righteous cried, and Jehovah heard,And delivered them out of all their troubles.
Jehovah is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart,And saveth such as are of a contrite spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous;But Jehovah delivereth him out of them all.
He keepeth all his bones:Not one of them is broken.
Evil shall slay the wicked;And they that hate the righteous shall be {Or, held guilty}condemned.
Jehovah redeemeth the soul of his servants;And none of them that take refuge in him shall be {Or, held guilty}condemned.
In like manner, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, even if any obey not the word, they may without the word be gained by the {Or, manner of life verse 16}behavior of their wives;
beholding your chaste {Or, manner of life verse 16}behavior coupled with fear.
Whose adorning let it not be the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on apparel;
but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible apparel of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
For after this manner aforetime the holy women also, who hoped in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own {Or, husbands (as Sarah…ye are become), doing well, and not being afraid}husbands:
as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose children ye now are, if ye do well, and are not {Or, afraid with}put in fear by any terror.
Ye husbands, in like manner, dwell with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor {Greek: unto the female vessel, as weaker.}unto the woman, as unto the weaker vessel, as being also joint-heirs of the grace of life; to the end that your prayers be not hindered.
Finally, be ye all likeminded, {Greek: sympathetic.}compassionate, loving as brethren, tenderhearted, humbleminded:
not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but contrariwise blessing; for hereunto were ye called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
For, {Psalm 34:12 ff.}He that would love life,And see good days,Let him refrain his tongue from evil,And his lips that they speak no guile:
And let him turn away from evil, and do good;Let him seek peace, and pursue it.
For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous,And his ears unto their supplication:But the face of the Lord is upon them that do evil.
And who is he that will harm you, if ye be zealous of that which is good?
But even if ye should suffer for righteousness' sake, blessed are ye: and fear not their fear, neither be troubled;
but sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord: being ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear:
having a good conscience; that, wherein ye are spoken against, they may be put to shame who revile your good manner of life in Christ.
For it is better, if the will of God should so will, that ye suffer for well-doing than for evil-doing.
Because Christ also {Many ancient authorities read died.}suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God; being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
in which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison,
that aforetime were disobedient, when the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, {Or, into which few, that is, eight souls were brought safely through water}wherein few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water:
which also {Or, in the antitype}after a true likeness doth now save you, even baptism, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the {Or, inquiry Or, appeal}interrogation of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ;
who is on the right hand of God, having gone into heaven; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High {Or, That abideth…Almighty; Even I &c.}Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of Jehovah, He is my refuge and my fortress;My God, in whom I trust.
For he will deliver thee from the snare of the fowler,And from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover thee with his pinions,And under his wings shalt thou take refuge:His truth is a shield and a buckler.
Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night,Nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
For the pestilence that walketh in darkness,Nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
A thousand shall fall at thy side,And ten thousand at thy right hand;But it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold,And see the reward of the wicked.
{Or, Because thou hast said, Jehovah is my refuge}For thou, O Jehovah, art my refuge!Thou hast made the Most High thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee,Neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent.
For he will give his angels charge over thee,To keep thee in all thy ways.
They shall bear thee up in their hands,Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder:The young lion and the serpent shalt thou trample under foot.
Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him:I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him;I will be with him in trouble:I will deliver him, and honor him.
With long life will I satisfy him,And show him my salvation.
A Psalm of praise; of DavidI will extol thee, my God, O King;And I will bless thy name for ever and ever.
Every day will I bless thee;And I will praise thy name for ever and ever.
Great is Jehovah, and greatly to be praised;And his greatness is unsearchable.
One generation shall laud thy works to another,And shall declare thy mighty acts.
Of the glorious majesty of thine honor,And of thy wondrous works, will I meditate.
And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts;And I will declare thy greatness.
They shall utter the memory of thy great goodness,And shall sing of thy righteousness.
Jehovah is gracious, and merciful;Slow to anger, and of great lovingkindness.
Jehovah is good to all;And his tender mercies are over all his works.
All thy works shall give thanks unto thee, O Jehovah;And thy saints shall bless thee.
They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom,And talk of thy power;
To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts,And the glory of the majesty of his kingdom.
Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,And thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.
Jehovah upholdeth all that fall,And raiseth up all those that are bowed down.
The eyes of all wait for thee;And thou givest them their food in due season.
Thou openest thy hand,And {Or, satisfiest every living thing with favor}satisfiest the desire of every living thing.
Jehovah is righteous in all his ways,And gracious in all his works.
Jehovah is nigh unto all them that call upon him,To all that call upon him in truth.
He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him;He also will hear their cry and will save them.
Jehovah preserveth all them that love him;But all the wicked will he destroy.
My mouth shall speak the praise of Jehovah;And let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.
