A Song of Ascents; of David.Jehovah, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty;Neither do I {Hebrew: walk.}exercise myself in great matters,Or in things too wonderful for me.
Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul;Like a weaned child with his mother,Like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, hope in JehovahFrom this time forth and for evermore.
A Song of Ascents.Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Jehovah.
Lord, hear my voice:Let thine ears be attentiveTo the voice of my supplications.
If thou, {Hebrew: Jah.}Jehovah, shouldest mark iniquities,O Lord, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with thee,That thou mayest be feared.
I wait for Jehovah, my soul doth wait,And in his word do I hope.
My soul waiteth for the LordMore than watchmen wait for the morning;Yea, more than watchmen for the morning.
O Israel, hope in Jehovah; For with Jehovah there is lovingkindness,And with him is plenteous redemption.
And he will redeem IsraelFrom all his iniquities.
Howbeit on the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement: it shall be a holy convocation unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto Jehovah.
And ye shall do no manner of work in that same day; for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement for you before Jehovah your God.
For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day; he shall be cut off from his people.
For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day; he shall be cut off from his people.
A Song of Ascents. In my distress I cried unto Jehovah,And he answered me.
Deliver my soul, O Jehovah, from lying lips,And from a deceitful tongue.
What shall be given unto thee, and what shall be done more unto thee,Thou deceitful tongue?
{Or, It is as the sharp arrows of the mighty man}Sharp arrows of the mighty,With coals of {Or, broom}juniper.
Woe is me, that I sojourn in Meshech,That I dwell among the tents of Kedar!
My soul hath long had her dwellingWith him that hateth peace.
I am for peace:But when I speak, they are for war.
In that day shalt thou not be put to shame for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me; for then I will take away out of the midst of thee {Or, them that exult in thy majesty}thy proudly exulting ones, and thou shalt no more be haughty in my holy mountain.
But I will leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall take refuge in the name of Jehovah.
Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, Jehovah of hosts.
But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
And he spake also this parable unto certain who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and set {Greek: the rest.}all others at nought:
Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a {See marginal note on chapter 3:12.}publican.
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this {See marginal note on chapter 3:12.}publican.
I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I get.
But the {See marginal note on chapter 3:12.}publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote his breast, saying, God, {Or, be thou propitiated}be thou merciful to me {Or, the sinner}a sinner.
I say unto you, This man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; but he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
For thou wilt save the afflicted people; But the haughty eyes thou wilt bring down.
And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on {In 1 Chronicles 27:18, Elihu.}Eliab, and said, Surely Jehovah's anointed is before him.
And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why art thou come down? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thy heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
And David said, What have I now done? {Or, Was it not but a word?}Is there not a cause?
Now the {Or, unspiritual Greek: psychical.}natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; and he cannot know them, because they are spiritually {Or, examined}judged.
But he that is spiritual {Or, examineth}judgeth all things, and he himself is {Or, examined}judged of no man.
Whoso privily slandereth his neighbor, him will I destroy:Him that hath a high look and a proud heart will I not suffer.
Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of Jehovah: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains.
For the Chief Musician; after the manner of Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. My soul {Hebrew: is silent unto God.}waiteth in silence for God only:From him cometh my salvation.
My soul, {Hebrew: be thou silent unto God.}wait thou in silence for God only; For my expectation is from him.
In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
A Psalm of David.Jehovah is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside {Hebrew: waters of rest.}still waters.
He restoreth my soul:He guideth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of {Or, deep darkness (and so elsewhere)}the shadow of death,I will fear no evil; for thou art with me;Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:Thou hast anointed my head with oil;My cup runneth over.
{Or, Only}Surely goodness and lovingkindness shall follow me all the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house of Jehovah {Hebrew: for length of days.}for ever.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of {Or, deep darkness (and so elsewhere)}the shadow of death,I will fear no evil; for thou art with me;Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
