Versliste
Now concerning things sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but love {Greek: buildeth up.}edifieth.
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but do them not; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their gain.
And, lo, thou art unto them as {Or, a love-song}a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument; for they hear thy words, but they do them not.
And thou shalt speak unto him, and put the words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do.
And they said, Hath Jehovah indeed spoken only {Or, by}with Moses? hath he not spoken also {Or, by}with us? And Jehovah heard it.
The opening of thy words giveth light; It giveth understanding unto the simple.
Only be strong and very courageous, to observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest {Or, deal wisely}have good success whithersoever thou goest.
For indeed we have had {Or, a gospel}good tidings preached unto us, even as also they: but the word of hearing did not profit them, because {Many ancient authorities read they were.}it was not united by faith with them that heard.
and he digged it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also hewed out a {Or, wine-vat}winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.
What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Every one that cometh unto me, and heareth my words, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like:
he is like a man building a house, who digged and went deep, and laid a foundation upon the rock: and when a flood arose, the stream brake against that house, and could not shake it: {Many ancient authorities read for it had been founded upon the rock: as in Matthew 7:25.}because it had been well builded.
But he that {Greek: heard.}heareth, and {Greek: did not.}doeth not, is like a man that built a house upon the earth without a foundation; against which the stream brake, and straightway it fell in; and the ruin of that house was great.
and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and smote upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall thereof.
If therefore thy whole body be full of light, having no part dark, it shall be wholly full of light, as when the lamp with its bright shining doth give thee light.
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
But I have this against thee, that thou didst leave thy first love.
Brethren, be ye imitators together of me, and mark them that so walk even as ye have us for an ensample.
The things which ye both learned and received and heard and saw in me, these things do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
not because we have not the right, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you, that ye should imitate us.
for Demas forsook me, having loved this present {Or, age}world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to {Or, Gaul}Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.
This thou knowest, that all that are in Asia turned away from me; of whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.
But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the {See marginal note on chapter 1:6.}gospel, I said unto Cephas before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest as do the Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, how compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves.
