The elders therefore among you I exhort, who am a fellow-elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, who am also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
Tend the flock of God which is among you, {Some ancient authorities omit exercising the oversight.}exercising the oversight, not of constraint, but willingly, {Some ancient authorities omit according to the will of God.}according to the will of God; nor yet for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
neither as lording it over the charge allotted to you, but making yourselves ensamples to the flock.
And when the chief Shepherd shall be manifested, ye shall receive the crown of glory that fadeth not away.
{Or, Likewise...elder; yea, all of you one to another. Gird yourselves with humility}Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you gird yourselves with humility, to serve one another: for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;
casting all your anxiety upon him, because he careth for you.
Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour,
whom withstand stedfast in {Or, the}your faith, knowing that the same sufferings are {Greek: being accomplished.}accomplished in your {Greek: brotherhood.}brethren who are in the world.
And the God of all grace, who called you unto his eternal glory in Christ, after that ye have suffered a little while, shall himself {Or, restore}perfect, establish, strengthen {Many ancient authorities add settle.} you.
To him be the dominion {Greek: unto the ages of the ages.}for ever and ever. Amen.
By Silvanus, {Greek: the.}our faithful brother, as I account him, I have written unto you briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God: stand ye fast therein.
{That is, The church, or, The sister.}She that is in Babylon, elect together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Mark my son.
Salute one another with a kiss of love.
Peace be unto you all that are in Christ.
Querverweise zu 1. Petrus 5,3 1Pet 5,3
The diseased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought back that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with rigor have ye ruled over them.
But ye are an elect race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that ye may show forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Nevertheless, neither is the woman without the man, nor the man without the woman, in the Lord.
But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
For Jehovah's portion is his people;Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.
Brethren, be ye imitators together of me, and mark them that so walk even as ye have us for an ensample.
Not so shall it be among you: but whosoever would become great among you shall be your {Or, servant}minister;
Blessed is the nation whose God is Jehovah,The people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
The things which ye both learned and received and heard and saw in me, these things do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your teacher, and all ye are brethren.
And call no man your father on the earth: for one is your Father, {Greek: the heavenly.}even he who is in heaven.
Neither be ye called masters: for one is your master, even the Christ.
Remember thy congregation, which thou hast gotten of old,Which thou hast redeemed to be the tribe of thine inheritance;And mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
{Or, because our gospel & c.}how that our {Greek: good tidings: and so elsewhere; see marginal note on Matthew 4:23.}gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much {Or, fulness}assurance; even as ye know what manner of men we showed ourselves toward you for your sake.
And Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they who are accounted to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great ones exercise authority over them.
But it is not so among you: but whosoever would become great among you, shall be your {Or, servant}minister;
and whosoever would be first among you, shall be {Greek: bondservant.}servant of all.
For the Son of man also came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
{Or, Rule}Feed thy people with thy rod, the flock of thy heritage, which dwell solitarily, in the forest in the midst of Carmel: let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old.
And ye became imitators of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit;
And there arose also a contention among them, which of them was accounted to be {Greek: greater.}greatest.
And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles have lordship over them; and they that have authority over them are called Benefactors.
But ye shall not be so: but he that is the greater among you, let him become as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.
For which is greater, he that {Greek: reclineth.}sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that {Greek: reclineth.}sitteth at meat? but I am in the midst of you as he that serveth.
Take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit hath made you {Or, overseers}bishops, to feed the church of {Some ancient authorities, including the two oldest manuscripts read God.}the Lord which he {Greek: acquired.}purchased with his own blood.
not because we have not the right, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you, that ye should imitate us.
What then is Apollos? and what is Paul? Ministers through whom ye believed; and each as the Lord gave to him.
Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an ensample to them that believe, in word, in manner of life, in love, in faith, in purity.
For we are God's fellow-workers: ye are God's {Greek: tilled land.}husbandry, God's building.
in all things showing thyself an ensample of good works; in thy doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity,
Not that we have lordship over your {Or, your faith}faith, but are helpers of your joy: for in faith ye stand fast.
For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your {Greek: bondservants. Compare 1 Corinthians 9:19.}servants {Some ancient authorities read through Jesus.}for Jesus' sake.
I wrote somewhat unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
Therefore, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he doeth, prating against us with wicked words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that would he forbiddeth and casteth them out of the church.
