Paul, a {Greek: bondservant.}servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,
in hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised {Or, long ages ago}before times eternal;
but in {Or, its}his own seasons manifested his word in the {Or, proclamation}message, wherewith I was intrusted according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
to Titus, my true child after a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.
For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that were wanting, and appoint elders in every city, as I gave thee charge;
if any man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children that believe, who are not accused of riot or unruly.
For the {Or, overseer}bishop must be blameless, as God's steward; not self-willed, not soon angry, {Or, not quarrelsome over wine.}no brawler, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre;
but given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled;
holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able both to exhort in the {Greek: healthful.}sound {Or, teaching}doctrine, and to convict the gainsayers.
For there are many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision,
whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.
One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said,
Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, idle {Greek: bellies.}gluttons.
This testimony is true. For which cause reprove them sharply, that they may be {Greek: healthy.}sound in the faith,
not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.
To the pure all things are pure: but to them that are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.
They profess that they know God; but by their works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
Querverweise zu Titus 1,9 Tit 1,9
And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? {Or, that}for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil: and he still holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, {Hebrew: to swallow him up.}to destroy him without cause.
Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief:
But speak thou the things which befit the {Greek: healthy.}sound {Or, teaching}doctrine:
whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.
My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go:My heart {Or, doth not reproach me for any of my days}shall not reproach me so long as I live.
Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation.
in all things showing thyself an ensample of good works; in thy doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity,
for he powerfully confuted the Jews, {Or, showing publicly}and that publicly, showing by the scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.
Buy the truth, and sell it not;Yea, wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
If any man teacheth a different doctrine, and consenteth not to {Greek: healthful.}sound words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of us.
But if all prophesy, and there come in one unbelieving or unlearned, he is {Or, convicted}reproved by all, he is judged by all;
{Many ancient authorities insert but.}prove all things; hold fast that which is good;
And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
for fornicators, for abusers of themselves with men, for menstealers, for liars, for false swearers, and if there be any other thing contrary to the {Greek: healthful.}sound {Or, teaching}doctrine;
in meekness {Or, instructing}correcting them that oppose themselves; if peradventure God may give them repentance unto the knowledge of the truth,
So then, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye were taught, whether by word, or by epistle of ours.
If any man teacheth a different doctrine, and consenteth not to {Greek: healthful.}sound words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
Hold the pattern of {Greek: healthful.}sound words which thou hast heard from me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
For the time will come when they will not endure the {Greek: healthful.}sound {Or, teaching}doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts;
Beloved, while I was giving all diligence to write unto you of our common salvation, I was constrained to write unto you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints.
Nevertheless that which ye have, hold fast till I come.
Remember therefore how thou hast received and didst hear; and keep it, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
I come quickly: hold fast that which thou hast, that no one take thy crown.
