Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, according to the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus,
to Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers in a pure conscience, how unceasing is my remembrance of thee in my supplications, night and day
longing to see thee, remembering thy tears, that I may be filled with {Or, joy in being reminded}joy;
having been reminded of the unfeigned faith that is in thee; which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and, I am persuaded, in thee also.
For which cause I put thee in remembrance that thou {Greek: stir into flame.}stir up the gift of God, which is in thee through the laying on of my hands.
For God gave us not a spirit of fearfulness; but of power and love and {Greek: sobering.}discipline.
Be not ashamed therefore of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but suffer hardship with the {Greek: good tidings; and so elsewhere. See marginal note on Matthew 4:23.}gospel according to the power of God;
who saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus {Or, long ages ago}before times eternal,
but hath now been manifested by the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and {Greek: incorruption. See Romans 2:7}immortality to light through the {Greek: good tidings; and so elsewhere. See marginal note on Matthew 4:23.}gospel,
whereunto I was appointed a {Greek: herald.}preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher.
For which cause I suffer also these things: yet I am not ashamed; for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard {Or, that which he hath committed unto me Greek: my deposit.}that which I have committed unto him against that day.
Hold the pattern of {Greek: healthful.}sound words which thou hast heard from me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
{Greek: The good deposit.}That good thing which was committed unto thee guard through the Holy Spirit which dwelleth in us.
This thou knowest, that all that are in Asia turned away from me; of whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.
The Lord grant mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus: for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain;
but, when he was in Rome, he sought me diligently, and found me
(the Lord grant unto him to find mercy of the Lord in that day); and in how many things he ministered at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

{Greek: The good deposit.}That good thing which was committed unto thee guard through the Holy Spirit which dwelleth in us.
Counsel is mine, and {Or, effectual working}sound knowledge:I am understanding; I have might.
And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
having heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have toward all the saints,
But abide thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of {Greek: what persons.}whom thou hast learned them;
a {Or, an instructor}corrector of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having in the law the form of knowledge and of the truth;
The things which ye both learned and received and heard and saw in me, these things do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
and the grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her:And happy is every one that retaineth her.
But thanks be to God, {Or, that ye were…but ye became}that, whereas ye were {Greek: bondservants.}servants of sin, ye became obedient from the heart to that {Or, pattern}form of teaching whereunto ye were delivered;
My son, let them not depart from thine eyes;Keep sound wisdom and discretion:
for fornicators, for abusers of themselves with men, for menstealers, for liars, for false swearers, and if there be any other thing contrary to the {Greek: healthful.}sound {Or, teaching}doctrine;
And he taught me, and said unto me:Let thy heart retain my words;Keep my commandments, and live;
Get wisdom, get understanding;Forget not, neither decline from the words of my mouth;
Forsake her not, and she will preserve thee;Love her, and she will keep thee.
{Or, The beginning of wisdom is, Get wisdom}Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom;Yea, with all {Or, thou hast gotten}thy getting get understanding.
Exalt her, and she will promote thee;She will bring thee to honor, when thou dost embrace her.
If any man teacheth a different doctrine, and consenteth not to {Greek: healthful.}sound words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go:Keep her; for she is thy life.
But speak thou the things which befit the {Greek: healthy.}sound {Or, teaching}doctrine:
Buy the truth, and sell it not;Yea, wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of us.
Only {Greek: behave as citizens worthily. Compare chapter 3:20.}let your manner of life be worthy of the {Greek: good tidings. See marginal note on chapter 1:5.}gospel of Christ: that, whether I come and see you or be absent, I may hear of your state, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one soul striving {Greek: with.}for the faith of the {Greek: good tidings. See marginal note on chapter 1:5.}gospel;
{Many ancient authorities insert but.}prove all things; hold fast that which is good;
holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able both to exhort in the {Greek: healthful.}sound {Or, teaching}doctrine, and to convict the gainsayers.
but Christ as a son, over {That is, God's house. See Numbers 12:7.}his house; whose house are we, if we hold fast our boldness and the glorying of our hope firm unto the end.
Having then a great high priest, who hath passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
let us hold fast the confession of our hope that it waver not; for he is faithful that promised:
Beloved, while I was giving all diligence to write unto you of our common salvation, I was constrained to write unto you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints.
Nevertheless that which ye have, hold fast till I come.
Remember therefore how thou hast received and didst hear; and keep it, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
I come quickly: hold fast that which thou hast, that no one take thy crown.
