For {Or, in the night}in a night Ar of Moab is laid waste, and brought to nought; for {Or, in the night}in a night Kir of Moab is laid waste, and brought to nought.
{Or, Bayith and Dibon are gone up to the high places}They are gone up to {Or, the temple}Bayith, and to Dibon, to the high places, to weep: Moab waileth {Or, upon}over Nebo, and {Or, upon}over Medeba; on all their heads is baldness, every beard is cut off.
In their streets they gird themselves with sackcloth; on their housetops, and in their broad places, every one waileth, weeping abundantly.
And Heshbon crieth out, and Elealeh; their voice is heard even unto Jahaz: therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud; his soul trembleth within him.
My heart crieth out for Moab; her {Or, as otherwise read, fugitives}nobles flee unto Zoar, {Or, as a heifer three years old}to Eglath-shelishi-yah: for by the ascent of Luhith with weeping they go up; for in the way of Horonaim they raise up a cry of destruction.
For the waters of Nimrim shall be {Hebrew: desolations.}desolate; for the grass is withered away, the tender grass faileth, there is no green thing.
Therefore the abundance they have gotten, and that which they have laid up, shall they carry away over the brook of the willows.
For the cry is gone round about the borders of Moab; the wailing thereof unto Eglaim, and the wailing thereof unto Beer-elim.
For the waters of Dimon are full of blood; for I will bring yet more upon Dimon, a lion upon them of Moab that escape, and upon the remnant of the land.

Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery,And life unto the bitter in soul;

Who rejoice {Or, unto exultation}exceedingly,And are glad, when they can find the grave?
From the cry of Heshbon even unto Elealeh, even unto Jahaz have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even unto Horonaim, {Or, as a heifer three years old}to Eglath-shelishiyah: for the waters of Nimrim also shall become {Hebrew: desolations.}desolate.
So that my soul chooseth strangling,And death rather than these my bones.
{Or, I waste away}I loathe my life; I {Or, shall}would not live alway:Let me alone; for my days are {Or, as a breath}vanity.
And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue that remain of this evil family, that remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith Jehovah of hosts.
Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?
Therefore now, O Jehovah, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.
And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
And in those days men shall seek death, and shall in no wise find it; and they shall desire to die, and death fleeth from them.
