A Psalm of David, {Or, to make memorial}to bring to remembrance.
O Jehovah, rebuke me not in thy wrath;
Neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.
For thine arrows {Hebrew: lighted on me.}stick fast in me,
And thy hand {}presseth me sore.
There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine indignation;
Neither is there any {Or, rest}health in my bones because of my sin.
For mine iniquities are gone over my head:
As a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
My wounds are loathsome and corrupt,
Because of my foolishness.
I am {Hebrew: bent.}pained and bowed down greatly;
I go mourning all the day long.
For my loins are filled with burning;
And there is no soundness in my flesh.
I am faint and sore bruised:
I have {Hebrew: roared.}groaned by reason of the disquietness of my heart.
Lord, all my desire is before thee;
And my groaning is not hid from thee.
My heart throbbeth, my strength faileth me:
As for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.
My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my plague;
And my kinsmen stand afar off.
They also that seek after my life lay snares for me;
And they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things,
And meditate deceits all the day long.
But I, as a deaf man, hear not;
And I am as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.
Yea, I am as a man that heareth not,
And in whose mouth are no {Or, arguments}reproofs.
For in thee, O Jehovah, do I hope:
Thou wilt answer, O Lord my God.
For I said, Lest they rejoice over me:
When my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.
For I am ready to fall,
And my sorrow is continually before me.
For I will declare mine iniquity;
I will be sorry for my sin.
But mine enemies are lively, and are strong;
And they that hate me {Hebrew: falsely.}wrongfully are multiplied.
They also that render evil for good
Are adversaries unto me, because I follow the thing that is good.
Forsake me not, O Jehovah:
O my God, be not far from me.
Make haste to help me,
O Lord, my salvation.

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David; {Or, to make memorial}to bring to remembrance.Make haste, O God, to deliver me;Make haste to help me, O Jehovah.
For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments, set to the {Or, the eighth}Sheminith. A Psalm of David.O Jehovah, rebuke me not in thine anger,Neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.
For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith Jehovah was wroth against you to destroy you. But Jehovah hearkened unto me that time also.
Thy wrath lieth hard upon me,And thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. [Selah
I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up:While I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.
Thy fierce wrath is gone over me;Thy terrors have cut me off.
{The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain.}In measure, {Or, by sending them away}when thou sendest them away, thou dost contend with them; he hath removed them with his rough blast in the day of the east wind.
{Or, In a little wrath}In overflowing wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting lovingkindness will I have mercy on thee, saith Jehovah thy Redeemer.
O Jehovah, correct me, but in {Hebrew: judgement.}measure: not in thine anger, lest thou {Hebrew: diminish me.}bring me to nothing.
For I am with thee, saith Jehovah, to save thee: for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have scattered thee, but I will not make a full end of thee; but I will correct thee in {Hebrew: judgement.}measure, and will in no wise {Or, hold thee guiltless}leave thee unpunished.
O Jehovah, I have heard {Or, thy fame}the report of thee, and {Or, was}am afraid:O Jehovah, revive thy work in the midst of the years;In the midst of the years make it known;In wrath remember mercy.
and ye have forgotten the exhortation which reasoneth with you as with sons, {Proverbs 3:11 f.}My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord,Nor faint when thou art reproved of him;
For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth,And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
{Or, Endure unto chastening}It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father chasteneth not?
But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of {Or, our spirits}spirits, and live?
For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.
All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, even the fruit of righteousness.
