Versliste
Set thou a wicked man over him;And let {Or, Satan Or, an accuser}an adversary stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, let him come forth guilty;And let his prayer {Or, become}be turned into sin.
Let his days be few;And let another take his office.
Let his children be fatherless,And his wife a widow.
Let his children be vagabonds, and beg;And let them seek their bread {Or, far from}out of their desolate places.
Let the extortioner {Hebrew: snare.}catch all that he hath;And let strangers make spoil of his labor.
Let there be none to {Or, continued}extend kindness unto him;Neither let there be any to have pity on his fatherless children.
Let his posterity be cut off;In the generation following let their name be blotted out.
Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with Jehovah;And let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.
Let them be before Jehovah continually,That he may cut off the memory of them from the earth;

The {Greek: first.}former treatise I made, O Theophilus, concerning all that Jesus began both to do and to teach,
until the day in which he was received up, after that he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
to whom he also {Greek: presented.}showed himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing unto them by the space of forty days, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God:
and, {Or, eating with them}being assembled together with them, he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, said he, ye heard from me:
for John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized {Or, with}in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.
They therefore, when they were come together, asked him, saying, Lord, dost thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?
And he said unto them, It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father hath {Or, appointed by}set within His own authority.
But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
And when he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
And while they were looking stedfastly into heaven as he went, behold two men stood by them in white apparel;
who also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye looking into heaven? this Jesus, who was received up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye beheld him going into heaven.
Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is nigh unto Jerusalem, a sabbath day's journey off.
And when they were come in, they went up into the upper chamber, where they were abiding; both Peter and John and {Or, Jacob}James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, {Or, Jacob}James the son of Alphæus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the {Or, brother See Jude 1.}son of {Or, Jacob}James.
These all with one accord continued stedfastly in prayer, {Or, with certain women}with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
And in these days Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren, and said (and there was a multitude of {Greek: names See Revelation 3:4.}persons gathered together, about a hundred and twenty),
Brethren, it was needful that the scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spake before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was guide to them that took Jesus.
For he was numbered among us, and received his {Or, lot}portion in this ministry.
(Now this man obtained a field with the reward of his iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
And it became known to all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch that in their language that field was called Akeldama, that is, The field of blood.)
For it is written in the book of Psalms, {Psalm 69:25}Let his habitation be made desolate,And let no man dwell therein:and, {Psalm 109:8.}His {Greek: overseership.}office let another take.
Of the men therefore that have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and went out {Or, over}among us,
beginning from the baptism of John, unto the day that he was received up from us, of these must one become a witness with us of his resurrection.
And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show of these two the one whom thou hast chosen,
to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.
And they gave lots {Or, unto}for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise;
For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of deceit have they opened against me:They have spoken {Or, against}unto me with a lying tongue.
They have compassed me about also with words of hatred,And fought against me without a cause.
For my love they are my adversaries:But I give myself unto prayer.
And they have {Hebrew: laid upon me.}rewarded me evil for good,And hatred for my love.
Set thou a wicked man over him;And let {Or, Satan Or, an accuser}an adversary stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, let him come forth guilty;And let his prayer {Or, become}be turned into sin.
Let his days be few;And let another take his office.

Let them be before Jehovah continually,That he may cut off the memory of them from the earth;
Because he remembered not to show kindness,But persecuted the poor and needy man,And the broken in heart, to slay them.
Yea, he loved cursing, and it came unto him;And he delighted not in blessing, and it was far from him.
He clothed himself also with cursing as with his garment,And it came into his inward parts like water,And like oil into his bones.
Let it be unto him as the raiment wherewith he covereth himself,And for the girdle wherewith he is girded continually.
This is the reward of mine adversaries from Jehovah,And of them that speak evil against my soul.
But deal thou with me, O Jehovah the Lord, for thy name's sake:Because thy lovingkindness is good, deliver thou me;
For I am poor and needy,And my heart is wounded within me.
I am gone like the shadow when it {Or, is stretched out}declineth:I am tossed up and down as the locust.
My knees {Or, totter}are weak through fasting;And my flesh faileth of fatness.
I am become also a reproach unto them:When they see me, they shake their head.
Help me, O Jehovah my God;Oh save me according to thy lovingkindness:
That they may know that this is thy hand;That thou, Jehovah, hast done it.
Let them curse, but bless thou:When they arise, they shall be put to shame,But thy servant shall rejoice.
{Or, Mine adversaries shall be clothed…And they shall cover &c.}Let mine adversaries be clothed with dishonor,And let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.
I will give great thanks unto Jehovah with my mouth;Yea, I will praise him among the multitude.
For he will stand at the right hand of the needy,To save him from them that judge his soul.
And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of Jehovah, and {That is, the Adversary.}Satan standing at his right hand to be his adversary.
And I heard a great voice in heaven, saying, {Or, Now is the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom, become our God's, and the authority is become his Christ's}Now is come the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, who accuseth them before our God day and night.
And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.
And he went away, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might {Or, betray}deliver him unto them.
Then Judas, who {See marginal note on chapter 10:4.}betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
saying, I have sinned in that I {See marginal note on chapter 10:4.}betrayed {Many ancient authorities read righteous.}innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see thou to it.
The thief cometh not, but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I came that they may have life, and may {Or, have abundance}have it abundantly.
For the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
saying, I have sinned in that I {See marginal note on chapter 10:4.}betrayed {Many ancient authorities read righteous.}innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see thou to it.
Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the ordinances, which Jehovah your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it;
that thou mightest fear Jehovah thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.
My son, forget not my {Or, teaching}law;But let thy heart keep my commandments:
For length of days, and years of life,And peace, will they add to thee.
I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days:Thy years are throughout all generations.
I have seen the wicked in great power,And spreading himself like a green tree in its native soil.
{Or, Yet he passed away}But one passed by, and, lo, he was not:Yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.
Brethren, it was needful that the scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spake before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was guide to them that took Jesus.
And they gave lots {Or, unto}for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
Jesus answered them, Did not I choose you the twelve, and one of you is a devil?
Now he spake of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he it was that should {Or, deliver him up}betray him, being one of the twelve.
Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.
let it fall upon the head of Joab, and upon all his father's house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth by the sword, or that lacketh bread.
thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them; for I Jehovah thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me,
While I was with them, I kept them in thy name which thou hast given me: and I guarded them, and not one of them perished, but the son of perdition; {Psalm 41:9?}that the scripture might be fulfilled.
let no man beguile you in any wise: for it will not be, except the falling away come first, and the man of {Many ancient authorities read lawlessness.}sin be revealed, the son of perdition,
Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and give them over to the power of the sword; and let their wives become childless, and widows; and let their men be slain of death, and their young men smitten of the sword in battle.
Now this he said, not because he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and having the {Or, box}bag {Or, carried what was put therein}took away what was put therein.
Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear Jehovah: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two children to be bondmen.
The memory of the righteous is blessed;But the name of the wicked shall rot.
His remembrance shall perish from the earth,And he shall have no name in the street.
Therefore, as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin; and so death passed unto all men, for that all sinned:—
