Wherefore, even as the Holy Spirit saith, {Psalm 95:7 ff.}To-day if ye shall hear his voice,
Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation,Like as in the day of the trial in the wilderness,
{Or, Wherewith}Where your fathers tried me by proving me,And saw my works forty years.
Wherefore I was displeased with this generation,And said, They do always err in their heart:But they did not know my ways;
{Or, So}As I sware in my wrath, {Greek: If they shall enter.}They shall not enter into my rest.
Take heed, brethren, lest haply there shall be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God:
but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called To-day; lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin:
Oh come, let us sing unto Jehovah;Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving;Let us make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.
For Jehovah is a great God,And a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the deep places of the earth; The {Or, strength}heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, and he made it;And his hands formed the dry land.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down;Let us kneel before Jehovah our Maker:
For he is our God,And we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.To-day, {Or, if ye will hear his voice, Harden &c.}oh that ye would hear his voice!
Harden not your heart, as at {That is, strife.}Meribah,As in the day of {That is, temptation.}Massah in the wilderness;
When your fathers tempted me,Proved me, and saw my work.
Forty years long was I grieved with that generation,And said, It is a people that do err in their heart,And they have not known my ways:
Wherefore I sware in my wrath,That they should not enter into my rest.
Oh come, let us sing unto Jehovah;Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

Forty years long was I grieved with that generation,And said, It is a people that do err in their heart,And they have not known my ways:
Wherefore I sware in my wrath,That they should not enter into my rest.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, by their {Or, stages}journeys, according to the commandment of Jehovah, and encamped in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.
Wherefore the people strove with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why strive ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt Jehovah?
And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore hast thou brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
And Moses cried unto Jehovah, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they are almost ready to stone me.
And Jehovah said unto Moses, Pass on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thy hand, and go.
Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
And he called the name of the place {That is, Tempting, or, Proving.}Massah, and {That is, Chiding, or Strife.}Meribah, because of the striving of the children of Israel, and because they tempted Jehovah, saying, Is Jehovah among us, or not?
And there was no water for the congregation: and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
And the people strove with Moses, and spake, saying, Would that we had died when our brethren died before Jehovah!
And why have ye brought the assembly of Jehovah into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our beasts?
And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.
And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces: and the glory of Jehovah appeared unto them.
And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,
Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock; so thou shalt give the congregation and their cattle drink.
And Moses took the rod from before Jehovah, as he commanded him.
And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; shall we bring you forth water out of this rock?
And Moses lifted up his hand, and smote the rock with his rod twice: and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their cattle.
And Jehovah said unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed not in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.
These are the waters of {That is, Strife.}Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with Jehovah, and he {Or, showed himself holy}was sanctified in them.
For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and from the one end of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?
Did ever a people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live?
Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that Jehovah your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
Unto thee it was showed, that thou mightest know that Jehovah he is God; there is none else besides him.
He made known his ways unto Moses,His doings unto the children of Israel.
My son, give me thy heart; And let thine eyes {Another reading is, observe.}delight in my ways.
But your little ones, that ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have rejected.
But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
and as they were eating, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall {See marginal note on chapter 10:4.}betray me.
And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began to say unto him every one, Is it I, Lord?
