{In verse 34, Eliel.}Eliab his son, Jeroham his son, Elkanah his son.
And the sons of Samuel: the first-born {See verse 33, and 1 Samuel 8:2. The Hebrew text has, Vashni, and Abiah.}Joel, and the second Abijah.
And these are they that {Hebrew; stood.}waited, and their sons. Of the sons of the Kohathites: Heman the singer, the son of Joel, the son of Samuel,
And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the furniture of the sanctuary, as the camp is set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch the {Or, holy things}sanctuary, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting.
And these are they that {Hebrew; stood.}waited, and their sons. Of the sons of the Kohathites: Heman the singer, the son of Joel, the son of Samuel,
And he answered and said, Have ye not read, {Genesis 1:27; verse 2.}that he who {Some ancient authorities read created.}made them from the beginning made them male and female,
and said, {Genesis 2:24.}For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh?
So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
They say unto him, {Deuteronomy 24:1-4.}Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorcement, and to put her away?
He saith unto them, Moses for your hardness of heart suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it hath not been so.
And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before Jehovah, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and Jehovah remembered her;
and it came to pass, when the time was come about, that Hannah conceived, and bare a son; and she called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of Jehovah.
And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto Jehovah the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.
But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned; and then I will bring him, that he may appear before Jehovah, and there abide for ever.
And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only Jehovah establish his word. So the woman tarried and gave her son suck, until she weaned him.
And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with {The Septuagint and Syriac have, a bullock three years old.}three bullocks, and one ephah of meal, and a {Or, skin}bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of Jehovah in Shiloh: and the child was young.
And they slew the bullock, and brought the child to Eli.
And she said, Oh, my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto Jehovah.
For this child I prayed; and Jehovah hath given me my petition which I asked of him:
therefore also I have {Or, lent}granted him to Jehovah; as long as he liveth he is granted to Jehovah. And he worshipped Jehovah there.
And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a {Or, kid}lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break its neck: and all the first-born of man among thy sons shalt thou redeem.
When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou vowest.
Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.
Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the {Or, messenger of God See Malachi 2:7.}angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thy hands?
Lo, children are a heritage of Jehovah; And the fruit of the womb is his reward.
And Hannah prayed, and said:My heart exulteth in Jehovah; My horn is exalted in Jehovah; My mouth is enlarged over mine enemies;Because I rejoice in thy salvation.
There is none holy as Jehovah; For there is none besides thee,Neither is there any rock like our God.
Talk no more so exceeding proudly;Let not arrogancy come out of your mouth; For Jehovah is a God of knowledge, {According to another reading, Though actions be not weighed.}And by him actions are weighed.
The bows of the mighty men are broken; And they that stumbled are girded with strength.
They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; And they that were hungry {Or, have rest}have ceased to hunger:Yea, the barren hath borne seven; And she that hath many children languisheth.
Jehovah killeth, and maketh alive:He bringeth down to Sheol, and bringeth up.
Jehovah maketh poor, and maketh rich:He bringeth low, he also lifteth up.
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust,He lifteth up the needy from the dunghill,To make them sit with princes,And inherit the throne of glory:For the pillars of the earth are Jehovah's,And he hath set the world upon them.
He will keep the feet of his {Or, godly ones Another reading is, holy one.}holy ones; But the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness; For by strength shall no man prevail.
They that strive with Jehovah shall be broken to pieces;Against them will he thunder in heaven:Jehovah will judge the ends of the earth; And he will give strength unto his king,And exalt the horn of his anointed.
And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto Jehovah before Eli the priest.
And Mary said,My soul doth magnify the Lord,
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath looked upon the low estate of his {Greek: bondmaid.}handmaid:For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; And holy is his name.
And his mercy is unto generations and generationsOn them that fear him.
He hath showed strength with his arm;He hath scattered the proud {Or, by}in the imagination of their heart.
He hath put down princes from their thrones,And hath exalted them of low degree.
The hungry he hath filled with good things; And the rich he hath sent empty away.
He hath given help to Israel his servant,That he might remember mercy
(As he spake unto our fathers)Toward Abraham and his seed for ever.
The kings of the earth set themselves,And the rulers take counsel together,Against Jehovah, and against his anointed, saying,
The kings of the earth set themselves in array,And the rulers were gathered together,Against the Lord, and against his {Greek: Christ.}Anointed:
