Moreover Elihu answered and said,
Thinkest thou this to be thy right,
Or sayest thou, My righteousness is more than God's,
That thou sayest, What advantage will it be unto thee?
And, What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?
I will answer thee,
And thy companions with thee.
Look unto the heavens, and see;
And behold the skies, which are higher than thou.
If thou hast sinned, what effectest thou against him?
And if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him?
If thou be righteous, what givest thou him?
Or what receiveth he of thy hand?
Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art;
And thy righteousness may profit a son of man.
By reason of the multitude of oppressions they cry out;
They cry for help by reason of the arm of the mighty.
But none saith, Where is God my Maker,
Who giveth songs in the night,
Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth,
And maketh us wiser than the birds of the heavens?
There they cry, {Or, but he answereth not}but none giveth answer,
Because of the pride of evil men.
Surely God will not hear an empty cry,
Neither will the Almighty regard it.
How much less when thou sayest {Or, thou beholdest him not! The cause is before him, therefore wait thou for him}thou beholdest him not,
The cause is before him, and thou waitest for him!
But now, because he hath not visited in his anger,
{Or, Thou sayest, He doth not greatly regard arrogance. Thus doth &c.}Neither doth he greatly regard arrogance;
Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vanity;
He multiplieth words without knowledge.

How much less shall I answer him,And choose out my words to reason with him?
Then will I visit their transgression with the rod,And their iniquity with stripes.
But now it is come unto thee, and thou {Or, art grieved}faintest;It toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
{Or, Though he slay me, yet will I wait for him}Behold, he will slay me; I have no hope:Nevertheless I will {Hebrew: argue.}maintain my ways before him.
As many as I love, I reprove and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
Terrors are turned upon me; {Or, Thou chasest}They chase {Or, my nobility}mine honor as the wind;And my welfare is passed away as a cloud.
And now my soul is poured out {Hebrew: upon.}within me;Days of affliction have taken hold upon me.
In the night season my bones are {Or, corroded and drop away from me}pierced {Hebrew: from off.}in me,And {Or, my sinews take &c.}the pains that gnaw me take no rest.
By God's great force is my garment disfigured;It bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.
He hath cast me into the mire,And I am become like dust and ashes.
I cry unto thee, and thou dost not answer me:I stand up, and thou gazest at me.
Thou art turned to be cruel to me;With the might of thy hand thou persecutest me.
Thou liftest me up to the wind, thou causest me to ride upon it;And thou dissolvest me in the storm.
For I know that thou wilt bring me to death,And {Or, the house of meeting for &c.}to the house appointed for all living.
Howbeit doth not one stretch out the hand in his fall?Or in his calamity therefore cry for help?
Did not I weep for him that was in trouble?Was not my soul grieved for the needy?
When I looked for good, then evil came;And when I waited for light, there came darkness.
My heart is troubled, and resteth not;Days of affliction are come upon me.
I go {Or, blackened, but not by the sun}mourning without the sun:I stand up in the assembly, and cry for help.
I am a brother to jackals,And a companion to ostriches.
My skin is black, and falleth from me,And my bones are burned with heat.
Therefore is my harp turned to mourning,And my pipe into the voice of them that weep.
And Jehovah said unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed not in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.
Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave?Or thy faithfulness in {Hebrew: Abaddon. See Job 26:6.}Destruction?
Shall thy wonders be known in the dark?And thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
But unto thee, O Jehovah, have I cried;And in the morning shall my prayer come before thee.
Jehovah, why castest thou off my soul?Why hidest thou thy face from me?
I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up:While I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.
Thy fierce wrath is gone over me;Thy terrors have cut me off.
And behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I cast thee off, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboiim? my heart is turned within me, my compassions are kindled together.
I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee; and I will not {Or, enter into the city}come in wrath.
All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, even the fruit of righteousness.
Wherefore {Greek: make straight.}lift up the hands that hang down, and the palsied knees;
