and the scripture was fulfilled which saith, {Genesis 15:6}And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness; {Isaiah 41:8; 2 Chronicles 20:7}and he was called the friend of God.
And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day: for before they were at enmity between themselves.
I have heard many such things: {Or, Wearisome}Miserable comforters are ye all.
But thou, O Jehovah, have mercy upon me, and raise me up,That I may requite them.
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.
Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his apparel, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.
And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son
(and he bade them teach the children of Judah the song of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of {Or, The Upright}Jashar):
{Or, The gazelle}Thy glory, O Israel, is slain upon thy high places!How are the mighty fallen!
Tell it not in Gath,Publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon;Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.
Ye mountains of Gilboa,Let there be no dew nor rain upon you, neither fields of offerings:For there the shield of the mighty was {Or, defiled}vilely cast away,The shield of Saul, {Or, as of one not anointed}not anointed with oil.
From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty,The bow of Jonathan turned not back,And the sword of Saul returned not empty.
Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives,And in their death they were not divided:They were swifter than eagles,They were stronger than lions.
Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,Who clothed you in scarlet {Hebrew: with delights.}delicately,Who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel.
How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! {Or, O Jonathan, slain &c.}Jonathan is slain upon thy high places.
I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan:Very pleasant hast thou been unto me:Thy love to me was wonderful,Passing the love of women.
How are the mighty fallen,And the weapons of war perished!
So Hushai, David's friend, came into the city; and Absalom came into Jerusalem.
A friend loveth at all times;And {Or, is born as a brother}a brother is born for adversity.
{Hebrew: A man of friends.}He that maketh many friends doeth it to his own destruction;But there is a {Hebrew: lover.}friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Oil and perfume rejoice the heart;So doth the sweetness of a man's friend that cometh of hearty counsel.
And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair.
And Pharoah gave men charge concerning him: and they brought him on the way, and his wife, and all that he had.
And Jehovah spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his minister Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the Tent.
Ye are my friends, if ye do the things which I command you.
Didst not thou, O our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and give it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?
But thou, Israel, my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend,
If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
and without faith it is impossible to be well-pleasing unto him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that seek after him.
Your father Abraham rejoiced {Or, that he should see}to see my day; and he saw it, and was glad.
for he looked for the city which hath the foundations, whose {Or, architect}builder and maker is God.
that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming conformed unto his death;
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.
Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord:
And Jehovah appeared unto him by the {Or, terebinths}oaks of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
Be not carried away by divers and strange teachings: for it is good that the heart be established by grace; not by meats, wherein they that {Greek: walked.}occupied themselves were not profited.
Hear us, my lord; thou art a prince of God among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead.

And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, Jehovah appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am {Hebrew: El Shaddai.}God Almighty; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
After these things the word of Jehovah came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, {Or, thy reward shall be exceeding great}and thy exceeding great reward.
And Jehovah appeared unto him by the {Or, terebinths}oaks of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
After these things the word of Jehovah came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, {Or, thy reward shall be exceeding great}and thy exceeding great reward.
But thou, Israel, my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend,
And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.
And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lifted up my hand unto Jehovah, {Hebrew: El Elyon.}God Most High, {Or, maker}possessor of heaven and earth,
that I will not take a thread nor a shoe-latchet nor aught that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:
{Or, let there be nothing for me: only that &c.}save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men that went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them taken their portion.
Even as the Father hath loved me, I also have loved you: abide ye in my love.
If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.
This is my commandment, that ye love one another, even as I have loved you.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Ye are my friends, if ye do the things which I command you.
No longer do I call you {Greek: bondservants.}servants; for the {Greek: bondservant.}servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I heard from my Father, I have made known unto you.
Ye did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that ye should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should abide: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand.
{Some ancient authorities read That which my Father hath given unto me}My Father, who hath given them unto me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch {Or, aught}them out of the Father's hand.
I and the Father are one.
Hereby know we love, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, shall we be saved {Greek: in.}by his life;
to wit, that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself, not reckoning unto them their trespasses, and having {Or, placed in us}committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
Jehovah appeared {Or, from afar}of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore {Or, have I continued lovingkindness unto thee}with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.
Ye did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that ye should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should abide: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or mother, or father, or children, or lands, for my sake, and for the {See marginal note on chapter 1:1.}gospel's sake,
but he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the {Or, age}world to come eternal life.

Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; cleanse yourselves, ye that bear the vessels of Jehovah.
And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the nations, whither they are gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:
and I will make them one nation in the land, upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all; and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all;
neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions; but I will save them {Or, with a slight change of text, from all their backslidings}out of all their dwelling-places, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God.
And my servant David shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in mine ordinances, and observe my statutes, and do them.
And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, they, and their children, and their children's children, for ever: and David my servant shall be their prince for ever.
Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; and I will {Or, give it them}place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.
My tabernacle also shall be {Or, over}with them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
And the nations shall know that {Or, I, Jehovah, do sanctify Israel}I am Jehovah that sanctifieth Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.
And every one that hath left houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, {Many ancient authorities add or wife: as in Luke 18:29.}or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive {Some ancient authorities read manifold.}a hundredfold, and shall inherit eternal life.

and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even {Or, convict}reprove them;
He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
And another of the disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
But Jesus saith unto him, Follow me; and leave the dead to bury their own dead.

And Elijah came near unto all the people, and said, How long go ye limping between the two sides? if Jehovah be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to me at that day; and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved his appearing.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved:God will help her, {Hebrew: at the dawn of morning.}and that right early.
By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out unto a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is our mother.
but rise, and enter into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

Yea verily, and I count all things to be loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but refuse, that I may gain Christ,
Beloved, I beseech you as sojourners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a grain of wheat fall into the earth and die, it abideth by itself alone; but if it die, it beareth much fruit.
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves.
And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing Jehovah hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.
He that {Or, found}findeth his life shall lose it; and he that {Or, lost}loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
For which cause I suffer also these things: yet I am not ashamed; for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard {Or, that which he hath committed unto me Greek: my deposit.}that which I have committed unto him against that day.
And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.
He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

So Abram went, as Jehovah had spoken unto him. And Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
Ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah, and my servant whom I have chosen; that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
I, even I, am Jehovah; and besides me there is no saviour.
I have declared, and I have saved, and I have showed; and there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah, and I am God.
There is none like unto God, O Jeshurun,Who rideth upon the heavens for thy help,And in his excellency on the skies.
The eternal God is thy dwelling-place,And underneath are the everlasting arms.And he thrust out the enemy from before thee,And said, Destroy.
And Israel dwelleth in safety,The fountain of Jacob alone,In a land of grain and new wine;Yea, his heavens drop down dew.
Happy art thou, O Israel:Who is like unto thee, a people saved by Jehovah,The shield of thy help,And the sword of thy excellency!And thine enemies shall {Or, yield feigned obedience}submit themselves unto thee;And thou shalt tread upon their high places.
Brethren, I count not myself {Many ancient authorities omit yet.}yet to have laid hold: but one thing I do, forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before.
I press on toward the goal unto the prize of the {Or, upward}high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God; for he hath prepared for them a city.
By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ:
and it shall sweep onward into Judah; it shall overflow and pass through; it shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of its wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.
And Jehovah shall inherit Judah as his portion in the holy land, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.
and he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: and he promised that he would give it to him in possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.
For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. What therefore ye worship in ignorance, this I set forth unto you.
and he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: and he promised that he would give it to him in possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

being made manifest that ye are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in tables that are hearts of flesh.
