Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,
Therefore do my thoughts give answer to me, {Or, And by reason of this my haste is within me}Even by reason of my haste that is in me.
I have heard the reproof which putteth me to shame; {Or, But out of my understanding my spirit answereth me}And the spirit of my understanding answereth me.
Knowest thou not this of old time,Since man was placed upon earth,
That the triumphing of the wicked is short,And the joy of the godless but for a moment?
Though his height mount up to the heavens,And his head reach unto the clouds;
Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung:They that have seen him shall say, Where is he?
He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found:Yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night.
The eye which saw him shall see him no more;Neither shall his place any more behold him.
{Or, as otherwise read, The poor shall oppress his children}His children shall seek the favor of the poor,And his hands shall give back his wealth.
His bones are full of his youth,But it shall lie down with him in the dust.
Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth,Though he hide it under his tongue,
Though he spare it, and will not let it go,But keep it still within his mouth;
Yet his food in his bowels is turned,It is the gall of asps within him.
He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again;God will cast them out of his belly.
He shall suck the poison of asps:The viper's tongue shall slay him.
He shall not look upon the rivers,The flowing streams of honey and butter.
That which he labored for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down;According to the substance {Hebrew: of his exchange.}that he hath gotten, he shall not rejoice.
For he hath oppressed and forsaken the poor;He hath violently taken away a house, {Or, which he builded not}and he shall not build it up.
Because he knew no quietness {Or, in his greed Hebrew: in his belly.}within him,He shall not save aught of that wherein he delighteth.
There was nothing left that he devoured not;Therefore his prosperity shall not endure.
In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits:The hand of every one that is in misery shall come upon him.
{Or, Let it be for the filling of his belly that God shall cast &c.}When he is about to fill his belly,God will cast the fierceness of his wrath upon him,And will rain it upon him {Or, as his food}while he is eating.
He shall flee from the iron weapon,And the bow of brass shall strike him through.
He draweth it forth, and it cometh out of his body;Yea, the glittering point cometh out of his gall:Terrors are upon him.
All darkness is laid up for his treasures:A fire not blown by man shall devour him; {Or, It shall go ill with him that is left}It shall consume that which is left in his tent.
The heavens shall reveal his iniquity,And the earth shall rise up against him.
The increase of his house shall depart;His goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.
This is the portion of a wicked man from God,And the heritage appointed unto him by God.
yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, {Or, lest at last by her coming she wear me out}lest she {Greek: bruise.}wear me out by her continual coming.
The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh (he that is called Christ): when he is come, he will declare unto us all things.
And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat upon it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he taketh it away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he cleanseth it, that it may bear more fruit.
Already ye are clean because of the word which I have spoken unto you.
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; so neither can ye, except ye abide in me.
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for apart from me ye can do nothing.
If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatsoever ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Herein {Or, was}is my Father glorified, {Many ancient authorities read that ye bear much fruit, and be my disciples.}that ye bear much fruit; and so shall ye be my disciples.
Even as the Father hath loved me, I also have loved you: abide ye in my love.
If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.
This is my commandment, that ye love one another, even as I have loved you.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Ye are my friends, if ye do the things which I command you.
No longer do I call you {Greek: bondservants.}servants; for the {Greek: bondservant.}servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I heard from my Father, I have made known unto you.
Ye did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that ye should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should abide: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
These things I command you, that ye may love one another.
If the world hateth you, {Or, know ye}ye know that it hath hated me before it hated you.
If ye were of the world, the world would love its own: but because ye are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
Remember the word that I said unto you, A {Greek: bondservant.}servant is not greater than his lord. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also.
But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.
If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no excuse for their sin.
He that hateth me hateth my Father also.
If I had not done among them the works which none other did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.
But this cometh to pass, that the word may be fulfilled that is written in their law, {Psalm 35:19; 69:4}They hated me without a cause.
But when the {Or, Advocate Or, Helper Greek: Paraclete.}Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which {Or, goeth forth from}proceedeth from the Father, he shall bear witness of me:
{Or, and bear ye also witness}and ye also bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
