{Greek: Let your turn of mind be free.}Be ye free from the love of money; content with such things as ye have: for himself hath said, {Deuteronomy 31:6; Joshua 1:5}I will in no wise fail thee, neither will I in any wise forsake thee.
So that with good courage we say, {Psalm 118:6.}The Lord is my helper; I will not fear:What shall man do unto me?
And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not; for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith Jehovah; but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest.
And he said unto him, {Or, My heart went not from me, when &c.}Went not my heart with thee, when the man turned from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards and vineyards, and sheep and oxen, and men-servants and maid-servants?
Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have whereof to give to him that hath need.
And Jehovah {Or, turned towards}looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian: have not I sent thee?
The blessing of Jehovah, it maketh rich; And {Or, toil addeth nothing thereto}he addeth no sorrow therewith.
But they that are minded to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts, such as drown men in destruction and perdition.
Brethren, let each man, wherein he was called, therein abide with God.
A Psalm of David.Fret not thyself because of evil-doers,Neither be thou envious against them that work unrighteousness.
For they shall soon be cut down like the grass,And wither as the green herb.
Trust in Jehovah, and do good; {Or, So shall thou dwell in the land and feed securely}Dwell in the land, and {Or, verily thou shall be fed}feed on his faithfulness.
{Or, So shall thou have thy delight in &c.}Delight thyself also in Jehovah; And he will give thee the {Hebrew: petitions.}desires of thy heart.
{Hebrew: Roll thy way upon Jehovah.}Commit thy way unto Jehovah;Trust also in him, and he will bring it to pass.
And he will make thy righteousness to go forth as the light,And thy justice as the noonday.
{Or, Be still before (Hebrew: silent to) Jehovah}Rest in Jehovah, and wait patiently for him:Fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way,Because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.
Cease from anger, and forsake wrath:Fret not thyself, it tendeth only to evil-doing.
For evil-doers shall be cut off;But those that wait for Jehovah, they shall inherit {Or, the earth (and so in verse 11, 22, 29, 34)}the land.
For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be:Yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and {Or, it}he shall not be.
But the meek shall inherit the land,And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
The wicked plotteth against the just,And gnasheth upon him with his teeth.
The Lord will laugh at him;For he seeth that his day is coming.
The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow,To cast down the poor and needy,To slay such as are upright in the way.
Their sword shall enter into their own heart,And their bows shall be broken.
Better is a little that the righteous hathThan the abundance of many wicked.
For the arms of the wicked shall be broken; But Jehovah upholdeth the righteous.
Jehovah knoweth the days of the perfect; And their inheritance shall be for ever.
They shall not be put to shame in the time of evil; And in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.
But the wicked shall perish,And the enemies of Jehovah shall be as {Or, the excellency of the pastures}the fat of lambs:They shall consume; {Or, like smoke}in smoke shall they consume away.
The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again; But the righteous dealeth graciously, and giveth.
For such as are blessed of him shall inherit the land; And they that are cursed of him shall be cut off.
A man's goings are established of Jehovah; And he delighteth in his way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For Jehovah {Or, upholdeth his hand}upholdeth him with his hand.
I have been young, and now am old;Yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken,Nor his seed begging bread.
All the day long he dealeth graciously, and lendeth; And his seed is blessed.
Depart from evil, and do good; And dwell for evermore.
For Jehovah loveth justice,And forsaketh not his saints; They are preserved for ever:But the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.
The righteous shall inherit the land,And dwell therein for ever.
The mouth of the righteous talketh of wisdom,And his tongue speaketh justice.
The law of his God is in his heart;None of his steps shall slide.
The wicked watcheth the righteous,And seeketh to slay him.
Jehovah will not leave him in his hand,Nor condemn him when he is judged.
Wait for Jehovah, and keep his way,And he will exalt thee to inherit the land:When the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it.
I have seen the wicked in great power,And spreading himself like a green tree in its native soil.
{Or, Yet he passed away}But one passed by, and, lo, he was not:Yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.
Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright; For there is a happy end to the man of peace.
As for transgressors, they shall be destroyed together; The end of the wicked shall be cut off.
But the salvation of the righteous is of Jehovah; He is their stronghold in the time of trouble.
And Jehovah helpeth them, and rescueth them;He rescueth them from the wicked, and saveth them,Because they have taken refuge in him.
But godliness with contentment is great gain:
for we brought nothing into the world, for neither can we carry anything out;
but having food and covering {Or, in these we shall have enough}we shall be therewith content.
for bodily exercise is profitable {Or, for little}for a little; but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life which now is, and of that which is to come.
Trust in Jehovah with all thy heart,And lean not upon thine own understanding:
In all thy ways acknowledge him,And he will {Or, make straight (or, plain)}direct thy paths.
Be not wise in thine own eyes;Fear Jehovah, and depart from evil:
And seek not ye what ye shall eat, and what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.
For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: but your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
Yet seek ye {Many ancient authorities read the kingdom of God.}his kingdom, and these things shall be added unto you.
Wherefore let them also that suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing unto a faithful Creator.
A Psalm of David.Jehovah is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Thou shalt not oppress a hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy sojourners that are in thy land within thy gates:
in his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it (for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it); lest he cry against thee unto Jehovah, and it be sin unto thee.
Say not unto thy neighbor, Go, and come again,And to-morrow I will give; When thou hast it by thee.
And if any man obeyeth not our word by this epistle, note that man, that ye have no company with him, to the end that he may be ashamed.
The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again; But the righteous dealeth graciously, and giveth.
All the day long he dealeth graciously, and lendeth; And his seed is blessed.
Well is it with the man that dealeth graciously and lendeth; He shall maintain his cause in judgment.
Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? even sinners lend to sinners, to receive again as much.
But love your enemies, and do them good, and lend, {Some ancient authorities read despairing of no man.}never despairing; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Most High: for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil.
Be ye merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might become rich.
