For the Chief Musician; set to Al-tashheth. A Psalm of David. Michtam; when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him.
Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God:
Set me on high from them that rise up against me.
Deliver me from the workers of iniquity,
And save me from the bloodthirsty men.
For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul;
The mighty gather themselves together against me:
Not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O Jehovah.
They run and prepare themselves without my fault:
Awake thou to {Hebrew: meet.}help me, and behold.
Even thou, O Jehovah God of hosts, the God of Israel,
Arise to visit all the nations:
Be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. [Selah
They return at evening, they howl like a dog,
And go round about the city.
Behold, they belch out with their mouth;
Swords are in their lips:
For who, say they, doth hear?
But thou, O Jehovah, wilt laugh at them;
Thou wilt have all the nations in derision.
{According to Septuagint Version and Vulgate, My strength.}Because of his strength I will give heed unto thee;
For God is my high tower.
My God with his lovingkindness will meet me:
God will let me see my desire upon {Or, them that lie in wait for me}mine enemies.
Slay them not, lest my people forget:
{Or, Make them wander to and fro}Scatter them by thy power, and bring them down,
O Lord our shield.
For the sin of their mouth, and the words of their lips,
Let them even be taken in their pride,
And for cursing and lying which they speak.
Consume them in wrath, consume them, so that they shall be no more:
And let them know that God ruleth in Jacob,
Unto the ends of the earth. [Selah
And at evening let them return, let them howl like a dog,
And go round about the city.
They shall wander up and down for food,
And tarry all night if they be not satisfied.
But I will sing of thy strength;
Yea, I will sing aloud of thy lovingkindness in the morning:
For thou hast been my high tower,
And a refuge in the day of my distress.
Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing praises:
For God is my high tower, the God of my mercy.
Querverweise zu Psalm 59,10 Ps 59,10
Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing praises:For God is my high tower, the God of my mercy.
For thou meetest him with the blessings of {Or, good things}goodness:Thou settest a crown of fine gold on his head.
For he hath delivered me out of all trouble;And mine eye hath seen my desire upon mine enemies.
Lead me, O Jehovah, in thy righteousness because of {Or, them that lie in wait for me}mine enemies;Make thy way {Or, level}straight before my face.
Blessed be {Or, God and the Father See Romans 15:6 margin.}the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort;
Remember not against us the iniquities of our forefathers:Let thy tender mercies speedily meet us;For we are brought very low.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold,And see the reward of the wicked.
{Another reading is, The evil shall return.}He will requite the evil unto {Or, them that lie in wait for me}mine enemies:Destroy thou them in thy truth.
but God, being rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
And it shall come to pass that, before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
Mine eye also hath seen my desire on {Or, them that lie in wait for me}mine enemies,Mine ears have heard my desire of the evil-doers that rise up against me.
{Or, They that lie in wait of me}Mine enemies would swallow me up all the day long;For they are many that fight proudly against me.
even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together {Some ancient authorities read in Christ.}with Christ (by grace have ye been saved),
For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we that are alive, that are left unto the {Or, presence}coming of the Lord, shall in no wise precede them that are fallen asleep.
His heart is established, he shall not be afraid,Until he see his desire upon his adversaries.
They gather themselves together, they hide themselves,They mark my steps, {Or, Inasmuch as}Even as they have waited for my soul.
And the God of all grace, who called you unto his eternal glory in Christ, after that ye have suffered a little while, shall himself {Or, restore}perfect, establish, strengthen {Many ancient authorities add settle.} you.
And David said, As Jehovah liveth, Jehovah will smite him; {Or, either}or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish.
Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:
and they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Jehovah, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.
And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son
As for me, I have not hastened from being a shepherd after thee; neither have I desired {Some ancient versions read, the judgement day of man.}the woeful day; thou knowest: that which came out of my lips was before thy face.
And when he drew nigh, he saw the city and wept over it,
saying, {Or, O that thou hadst known}If thou hadst known in {Some ancient authorities read this thy day.}this day, even thou, the things which belong unto {Some ancient authorities read thy peace.}peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
For the days shall come upon thee, when thine enemies shall cast up a {Greek: palisade.}bank about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,
and shall dash thee to the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
For being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.
