For the Chief Musician; set to Al-tashheth. A Psalm of David. Michtam. {Or, Is the righteousness ye should speak dumb?}Do ye indeed {Or, as otherwise read, O ye gods Or, O ye mighty ones}in silence speak righteousness?Do ye {Or, judge uprightly the sons of men}judge uprightly, O ye sons of men?
Nay, in heart ye work wickedness;Ye weigh out the violence of your hands in the earth.
The wicked are estranged from the womb:They go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.
Their poison is like the poison of a serpent:They are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear,
Which hearkeneth not to the voice of {Or, enchanters}charmers,Charming never so wisely.
And he shall make a firm covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the {Or, meal-offering}oblation to cease; and {Or, upon the pinnacle of abominations shall be &c.}upon the wing of abominations shall come one that maketh desolate; and even unto the full end, and that determined, shall wrath be poured out upon the desolate.
And because iniquity shall be multiplied, the love of the many shall wax cold.
(Let me be weighed in an even balance,That God may know mine integrity);
TEKEL; thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye no longer walk as the Gentiles also walk, in the vanity of their mind,
being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their heart;
who being past feeling gave themselves up to lasciviousness, {Or, to make a trade of}to work all uncleanness with {Or, covetousness Compare chapter 5:3; Colossians 3:5.}greediness.
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity;And in sin did my mother conceive me.
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. {Or, When one speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for his father also is a liar.}When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.
And Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
holding faith and a good conscience; which some having thrust from them made shipwreck concerning the faith:
through the hypocrisy of men that speak lies, {Or, seared}branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron;
