For the Chief Musician; set to {That is, The lily of testimony.}Shushan Eduth. Michtam of David, to teach; when he strove with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and Joab returned, and smote of Edom in the Valley of Salt twelve thousand.
O God thou hast cast us off, thou hast broken us down;
Thou hast been angry; oh restore us again.
 Thou hast made the land to tremble; thou hast rent it:
Heal the breaches thereof; for it shaketh.
 Thou hast showed thy people hard things:
Thou hast made us to drink the wine of staggering.
 Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee,
That it may be displayed because of the truth. [Selah
 That thy beloved may be delivered,
Save with thy right hand, and answer {Another reading is, me.}us.
 God hath spoken in his holiness: I will exult;
I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.
 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine;
Ephraim also is the defence of my head;
Judah is my  {Or, lawgiver}sceptre.
 Moab is my washpot;
 {Or, Unto}Upon Edom will I cast my shoe:
Philistia, shout thou because of me.
 Who will bring me into the strong city?
 {Or, Who will lead me &c.}Who hath led me unto Edom?
  {Or, Will not thou, O God, who hast cast us off, And goest…hosts?}Hast not thou, O God, cast us off?
And thou goest not forth, O God, with our hosts.
 Give us help against the adversary;
For vain is the {Hebrew: salvation.}help of man.
 Through God we shall do valiantly;
For he it is that will tread down our adversaries.
Querverweise zu Psalm 60,9 Ps 60,9
And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
And it came to pass, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem.
And the watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with thee.
Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.
And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah; yea, I have taken the city of waters.
Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; lest I take the city, and {Hebrew: my name be called upon it.}it be called after my name.
And David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.
And he took the crown of {Or, Malcam See Zephaniah 1:5}their king from off his head; and the weight thereof was a talent of gold, and in it were precious stones; and it was set on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city, exceeding much.
And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them {Or, to}under saws, and {Or, to}under harrows of iron, and {Or, to}under axes of iron, and {Or, with a slight change in the Hebrew text, made them labor at}made them pass through the {Or, brick-mould}brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.
And he showed them the entrance into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family.
And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and was made chief.
And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of Beth-lehem, which is by the gate!
And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto Jehovah,
and said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this: shall I drink the blood of these men {Hebrew: with their lives.}that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.
