God hath spoken in his holiness: I will exult;I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.
Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;Ephraim also is the defence of my head;Judah is my {Or, lawgiver}sceptre.
Moab is my washpot; {Or, Unto}Upon Edom will I cast my shoe;Over Philistia will I shout.
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
In that day Jehovah made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
the Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite,
and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim,
and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.
And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him a house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called {That is, Booths.}Succoth.
And Jacob came {Or, to Shalem, a city}in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-aram; and encamped before the city.
The sceptre shall not depart from Judah,Nor {Or, a lawgiver}the ruler's staff from between his feet, {Or, Til he come to Shiloh, having the obedience of the peoples Or, according to Syriac, Til he come whose it is &c.}Until Shiloh come:And unto him shall the obedience of the peoples be.
The well, which the princes digged,Which the nobles of the people delved, {Or, By order of the law-giver}With the sceptre, and with their staves.And from the wilderness they journeyed to Mattanah;
Let mine outcasts dwell with thee; as for Moab, be thou a covert to him from the face of the destroyer. For {Or, extortion}the extortioner is brought to nought, destruction ceaseth, {Hebrew: the treaders down.}the oppressors are consumed out of the land.
Now this was the custom in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning exchanging, to confirm all things: a man drew off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbor; and this was the manner of attestation in Israel.
Tell it not in Gath,Publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon;Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.
And they shall fly down upon the shoulder of the Philistines on the west; together shall they despoil the children of the east: they shall put forth their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them.
