Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted {Greek: from.}of God; for God {Or, is untried in evil}cannot be tempted with {Greek: evil things.}evil, and he himself tempteth no man:
but each man is {Or, tempted by his own lust, being drawn away by it, and enticed.}tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.
Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin: and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.
Be not deceived, my beloved brethren.
Every good {Or, giving}gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, neither shadow that is cast by turning.
Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
And it came to pass after these things, that God did prove Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham; and he said, Here am I.
And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led in the Spirit in the wilderness
during forty days, being tempted of the devil. And he did eat nothing in those days: and when they were completed, he hungered.
And the devil said unto him, If thou art the Son of God, command this stone that it become {Or, a loaf}bread.
And Jesus answered unto him, It is written, {Deuteronomy 8:3.}Man shall not live by bread alone.
And he led him up, and showed him all the kingdoms of {Greek: the inhabited earth.}the world in a moment of time.
And the devil said unto him, To thee will I give all this authority, and the glory of them: for it hath been delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
If thou therefore wilt {The Greek word denotes an act of reverence, whether paid to a creature, or to the Creator (compare marginal note on Matthew 2:2).}worship before me, it shall all be thine.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, It is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
And he led him to Jerusalem, and set him on the {Greek: wing.}pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:
for it is written, {Psalm 91:11, 12}He shall give his angels charge concerning thee, to guard thee:
and,On their hands they shall bear thee up,Lest haply thou dash thy foot against a stone.
And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, {Deuteronomy 6:16.}Thou shalt not make trial of the Lord thy God.
And when the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him {Or, until}for a season.
For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but one that hath been in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
And ye know that he was manifested to {Or, bear sins}take away sins; and in him is no sin.
I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world cometh: and he hath nothing {Or, in me. 31 But that &c…I do, arise &c.}in me;
Jesus wept.
And when he drew nigh, he saw the city and wept over it,

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey the lusts thereof:
but sin, finding occasion, wrought in me through the commandment all manner of {Or, lust}coveting: for apart from {Or, law}the law sin is dead.
Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
