Now a certain Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by race, {Or, a learned man}an eloquent man, came to Ephesus; and he was mighty in the scriptures.
This man had been {Greek: taught by word of mouth.}instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spake and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, knowing only the baptism of John:
and he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more accurately.
And when he was minded to pass over into Achaia, the brethren encouraged him, and wrote to the disciples to receive him: and when he was come, he {Or, helped much through grace them that had believed}helped them much that had believed through grace;
for he powerfully confuted the Jews, {Or, showing publicly}and that publicly, showing by the scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.
but all these worketh the one and the same Spirit, dividing to each one severally even as he will.
But as touching Apollos the brother, I besought him much to come unto you with the brethren: and it was not at all {Or, God's will that he should come now Compare Romans 2:18 margin.}his will to come now; but he will come when he shall have opportunity.
Now I beseech you, brethren, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no {Greek: schisms.}divisions among you; but that ye be perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
For it hath been signified unto me concerning you, my brethren, by them that are of the household of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
Now this I mean, that each one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
in diligence not slothful; fervent in spirit; serving {Some ancient authorities read the opportunity.}the Lord;
But I permit not a woman to teach, nor to have dominion over a man, but to be in quietness.
Are we beginning again to commend ourselves? or need we, as do some, epistles of commendation to you or from you?
I commend unto you Phoebe our sister, who is a {Or, deaconess}servant of the church that is at Cenchreae:
that ye receive her in the Lord, worthily of the saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever matter she may have need of you: for she herself also hath been a helper of many, and of mine own self.
And when he was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: and they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple.
But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus.
And he was with them going in and going out at Jerusalem,
This is the third time I am coming to you. At the mouth of two witnesses or three shall every word be established.
I planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for apart from me ye can do nothing.
