A Prayer of David.
Hear the right, O Jehovah, attend unto my cry;
Give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips.
Let my sentence come forth from thy presence;
{Or, Thine eyes behold with equity}Let thine eyes look upon equity.
Thou hast proved my heart; thou hast visited me in the night;
Thou hast tried me, and {Or, findest no evil purpose in me; My mouth &c.}findest nothing;
I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.
As for the works of men, by the word of thy lips
I have kept me from the ways of the violent.
My steps have held fast to thy paths,
My feet have not slipped.
I have called upon thee, for thou wilt answer me, O God:
Incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech.
Show thy marvellous lovingkindness,
O thou that savest {Or, them that take refuge…rise up against thy right hand}by thy right hand them that take refuge in thee
From those that rise up against them.
Keep me as the apple of the eye;
Hide me under the shadow of thy wings,
From the wicked that oppress me,
My deadly enemies, that compass me about.
{Or, They have shut up their heart}They are inclosed in their own fat:
With their mouth they speak proudly.
They have now compassed us in our steps;
They set their eyes to cast us down to the earth.
He is like a lion that is greedy of his prey,
And as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.
Arise, O Jehovah,
{Or, Forestall}Confront him, cast him down:
Deliver my soul from {Or, the wicked, who is thy sword}the wicked by thy sword;
From {Or, men who are thy hand}men by thy hand, O Jehovah,
From men {Or, whose portion in life is of the world}of the world, whose portion is in this life,
And whose belly thou fillest with thy treasure:
They are satisfied with children,
And leave the rest of their substance to their babes.
As for me, {Or, let me}I shall behold thy face in righteousness;
{Or, let me}I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with beholding thy form.
Querverweise zu Psalm 17,14 Ps 17,14
And his lord commended {Greek: the stewart of unrightousness.}the unrighteous steward because he had done wisely: for the sons of this {Or, age}world are for their own generation wiser than the sons of the light.
For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away;His glory shall not descend after him.
Though while he lived he blessed his soul(And men praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself),
{Hebrew: Thou shall go, or, It shall go.}He shall go to the generation of his fathers; {Or, Who never more see}They shall never see the light.
The tents of robbers prosper,And they that provoke God are secure; {Or, That bring their god to their hand}Into whose hand God bringeth abundantly.
If thou seek her as silver,And search for her as for hid treasures:
Surely every man walketh {Or, as a shadow}in a vain show;Surely they are disquieted {Or, for vanity}in vain:He heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.
And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
Behold, these are the wicked;And, being alway at ease, they increase in riches.
Who knoweth not {Or, by}in all these,That the hand of Jehovah hath wrought this,
The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in the field; which a man found, and hid; and {Or, for joy thereof}in his joy he goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
For what careth he for his house after him,When the number of his months is cut off?
If ye were of the world, the world would love its own: but because ye are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
And I will say to my {Or, life}soul, {Or, life}Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry.
But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night {Greek: they require thy soul.}is thy {Or, life}soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?
So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
Wherefore do the wicked live,Become old, yea, wax mighty in power?
Their seed is established with them in their sight,And their offspring before their eyes.
Their houses are safe from fear,Neither is the rod of God upon them.
Their bull gendereth, and faileth not;Their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.
They send forth their little ones like a flock,And their children dance.
They {Hebrew: lift up the voice.}sing to the timbrel and harp,And rejoice at the sound of the pipe.
They spend their days in prosperity,And in a moment they go down to Sheol.
And they say unto God, Depart from us;For we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.
What is the Almighty, that we should serve him?And what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?
If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword;And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.
Those that remain of him shall be buried in death,And his widows shall make no lamentation.
Though he heap up silver as the dust,And prepare raiment as the clay;
He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on,And the innocent shall divide the silver.
I have given them thy word; and the world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
But Abraham said, {Greek: Child.}Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish.
Yet he filled their houses with good things:But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
And he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house;
Ye are of God, my little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.
Ye have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure; ye have nourished your hearts in a day of slaughter.
for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
They are of the world: therefore speak they as of the world, and the world heareth them.
